American visceral Leishmaniasis: a case report J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Langoni,H.; Lucheis,S. B.; Da Silva,R. C.; Castro,A. P. B.; Paes,A. C..
Visceral leishmaniasis is a zoonotic disease caused by parasites of the Leishmania genus. Dog is the major source of infection to man, especially in urban areas. The authors report a case of visceral leishmaniasis in a pit bull female dog from Bocaina, São Paulo, Brazil. The animal presented clinical signs compatible with leishmaniasis, including skin lesions in the body and partial damage of the external ears. The indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) demonstrated a titer of 1280, and promastigote forms of Leishmania sp were isolated by the culture of bone marrow puncture. Cytological analysis of the lymph node and smear of the bone marrow puncture revealed macrophages containing amastigote forms of Leishmania sp in their inner region. The test of...

Genetic variability and diversity of mutant rice revealed by quantitative traits and molecular markers Agrociencia
Oladosu,Yusuff; Rafii,Mohd Y.; Abdullah,Norhani; Malek,Mohammad Abdul; Rahim,Harun A.; Hussin,Ghazali; Ismail,Mohd Razi; Latif,Mohammad Abdul; Kareem,Isiaka.
Genetic variability with mutagenic agents has been employed in plant breeding due to its significant contribution to the improvement of the existing rice genotypes by using genetically diverse parents. This study evaluated the genetic variability and diversity of mutant rice using quantitative traits and inter-simple sequence repeats (ISSR) molecular markers. A field experiment was carried out on M5 generation of 31 developed mutant lines and their parent (control). Morphological traits and 25 ISSR molecular markers were used as tools for determining cultivar identities and genetic diversity. The selected primers generated 443 clear polymorphic bands with an average number of 18 per primer. The bands were 85.10 % polymorphic. Un-weighted Pair Group of...

POLYMERASE CHAIN REACTION DETECTION OF AVIAN LEUKOSIS VIRUS DNA IN VACCINES USED IN POULTRY Rev Salud Anim.
Acevedo,Ana María; Rodríguez,Edisleidy; Uffo,Odalys; Relova,Damarys; Noda,Julia; Díaz de Arce,Heidy.
Avian leukosis viruses (ALV) provoke a variety of trasmissible bening and malign tumoral diseases affecting birds. Chickens are affected by six subgroups of ALV designs A, B, C, D, E and J of more recent world dissemination. These viruses are potential contaminants of live vaccines used in poultry. In order to research the presence of DNA from ALVs as contaminants of viral commercial vaccines to be used in poultry, different Marek´s disease vaccines were screened by a reported polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay designed to detect all subgroups of ALVs. DNA samples extracted from seven vaccines were submitted to PCR using primers for a conserved region of env gene of HPRS-103. ALV sequences were detected in seven samples (100%). The methodology employed...

Prevalence and quantification of Listeria monocytogenes in beef offal at retail level in Selangor, Malaysia BJM
Kuan,Chee Hao; Wong,Woan Chwen; Pui,Chai Fung; Mahyudin,Nor Ainy; Tang,John Yew Huat; Nishibuchi,Mitsuaki; Radu,Son.
A total of 63 beef offal samples (beef liver = 16; beef lung = 14; beef intestine = 9; beef tripe = 15; beef spleen = 9) from three wet markets (A, B, and C) in Selangor, Malaysia were examined for the prevalence and microbial load of Listeria monocytogenes. A combination of the most probable number and polymerase chain reaction (MPN-PCR) method was employed in this study. It was found that L. monocytogenes detected in 33.33% of the beef offal samples. The prevalence of L. monocytogenes in beef offal purchased from wet markets A, B, and C were 22.73%, 37.50% and 41.18% respectively. The density of L. monocytogenes in all the samples ranged from<3upto> 2,400 MPN/g. The findings in this study indicate that beef offal can be a potential vehicle of...
