A HMM-based model to geolocate pelagic fish from high-resolution individual temperature and depth histories: European sea bass as a case study ArchiMer
Woillez, Mathieu; Fablet, Ronan; Tran-thanh Ngo,; Lalire, Maxime; Lazure, Pascal; De Pontual, Helene.
Numerous methods have been developed to geolocate fish from data storage tags. Whereas demersal species have been tracked using tide-driven geolocation models, pelagic species which undertake extensive migrations have been mainly tracked using light-based models. Here, we present a new HMM-based model that infers pelagic fish positions from the sole use of high-resolution temperature and depth histories. A key contribution of our framework lies in model parameter inference (diffusion coefficient and noise parameters with respect to the reference geophysical fields—satellite SST and temperatures derived from the MARS3D hydrodynamic model), which improves model robustness. As a case study, we consider long time series of data storage tags (DSTs) deployed on...

A multi-approach analysis of the genetic diversity in populations of Astyanax aff. bimaculatus Linnaeus, 1758 (Teleostei: Characidae) from Northeastern Brazil Neotropical Ichthyology
Pamponet,Vanessa de Carvalho Cayres; Carneiro,Paulo Luiz Souza; Affonso,Paulo Roberto Antunes de Mello; Miranda,Viviam Souto; Silva Júnior,Juvenal Cordeiro; Oliveira,Claudine Gonçalves de; Gaiotto,Fernanda Amato.
Few reports are available about the ichthyofauna of typical semi-arid rivers, although the regional diversity has been constantly threatened by human activities, mainly related to impoundment and construction of dams. The goal of the present work was to evaluate using different methods, the population genetic structure of a characin fish, Astyanax aff. bimaculatus, widespread throughout hydrographic basins of Bahia, Northeastern Brazil. Morphological (meristic and morphometric data), cytogenetic (karyotype and Ag-NOR), and molecular (RAPD and SPAR) analyses were carried out in specimens collected upstream and downstream of Pedra Dam, in the main channel of Contas River (Contas River Basin), and in the Mineiro stream, which belongs to the adjacent Recôncavo...

Age et croîssance du chinchard à quelque jaune (trachurus méditerraneus) dans la région nord de la Tunisie OceanDocs
Fezzani Serbaji, S.; Chemmam-A, B.; Ben Salem, M..

Hattour, A..
The temporal evolution of the demographic structure of bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus, Linnaeus 1758) and of the little tuna (Euthynnus alletteratus, Rafinesque 1810) by the Tunisian traps of Sidi Daoud and Monastir is studied during 3 periods (1979-1983; 1988-1992 and 1993-1997). This survey showed the two points of passive capture landing draw the bluefin tuna from two populations of different composition. The fish taken from Tunisian waters do not from a homogenous group of similar beings, since they result from a mixture of local Mediterrean and Atlantic forms. This conclusion was arrived at by Heldt (1929), and confirmed in 2004, by displacement studies indicated that, after reproduction, the adults (<100kg) remained in the Mediterranean, and that,...

Aspectos biológico-pesqueros del abadejo (Genypterus blacodes) OceanDocs
Renzi, M.A..
The kingklip is one of the species that has been traditionally exploited in the Argentine Sea. Although captures were not very important, they have been increased in the last years. In this paper, the structure of the concentration areas of summer, spring and winter distribution and other biological aspects were analyzed, on the basis of the data collected during cruises carried out by R/V"Walther Herwig" and R/V"Shinkai Maru" in Argentine waters during 1978/79. The trophic spectrum of the kingklip comprises mainly food species of the Classes Pisces and Crustacea as well as other complementary groups like Mollusca, Brachiopoda and haliacea.

OceanDocs
Perrotta, R.G.; Tringali, L.S.; Izzo, A.; Boccanfuso, J.; López, F.; Macchi, G.J..
Movements pattern records of the Mar del Plata inshore fishing fleet during the 1997/98 and 1998/99 chub mackerel fishing seasons (October-January) allowed to observe that there is coincidence between the decrease of the 1983-1997 catches with respect to years previous to the 1975/76 "critical season" and a reduction of the inshore fleet fishing grounds which modifies accessibility of the fleet to the chub mackerel schools. Biostatistical and gonadal development results obtained in the Mar del Plata area (i.e., presence of adults during almost the whole fishing season which overlaps with the spawning season) do not differ significantly from those obtained during previous fishing seasons. As recommended in previous papers, chub mackerel fishing operations...

Aspectos reprodutivos do cangati, Parauchenipterus galeatus Linnaeus (Osteichthyes, Auchenipteridae) da Lagoa de Extremoz, Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil Zoologia
Medeiros,Ana Patrícia T. de; Chellappa,Naithirithi T.; Chellappa,Sathyabama.
The Lake Extremoz is one of the three big lakes in the State of Rio Grande do Norte. The present work was carried out in this lake during the period of October 2000 to September 2001, which included the dry and the rainy seasons. Parauchenipterus galeatus Linnaeus, 1766 represent 10% of the commercially important species captured from this lake. Fish samples were collected on a monthly basis, besides registering the rainfall, temperature, and dissolved oxygen of the lake. The populational structure of cangati and the stage of maturation of the gonads were determined, besides the gonadosomatic relation. The results indicate that the study population presented higher mean values of total length and weight during the dry season. Mature fishes were caught...

Assessment of sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax, L.) stock delimitation in the Bay of Biscay and the English Channel based on mark-recapture and genetic data ArchiMer
Fritsch, Manon; Morizur, Yvon; Lambert, E; Bonhomme, Francois; Guinand, B.
Sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fisheries are becoming increasingly abundant along eastern Atlantic coastlines, especially in the ICES sub-areas IV, VII and VIII, but they are still not being managed by the European Union TAC (Total Allowed Catches) system. Scientific information about these sea bass stocks is limited, but the fishery is currently managed or modelled based upon these data, separated into the ICES divisions. Clearly, failure to manage satisfactorily the fishery may lead to a decline in stocks. We therefore investigated the structure of Atlantic sea bass populations at eight microsatellite loci in the Bay of Biscay and the English Channel and, additionally, at five selected loci in Ireland and Scotland. Genetic data showed no significant...

Atlantic bluefin tuna: population dynamics, ecology, fisheries and management ArchiMer
Fromentin, Jean-marc; Powers, Joseph.
Both old and new information on the biology and ecology of Atlantic bluefin tuna have confronted scientists with research challenges: research needs to be connected to current stock-assessment and management issues. We review recent studies on habitat, migrations and population structure, stressing the importance of electronic tagging results in the modification of our perception of bluefin tuna population dynamics and behaviour. Additionally, we question, from both scientific and management perspectives, the usefulness of the classical stock concept and suggest other approaches, such as Clark's contingent and metapopulation theories. Current biological information confirms that a substantial amount of uncertainty still exists in the understanding of...

Bathymetric distribution and growth rates of Eunicella verrucosa (Cnidaria: Gorgoniidae) populations along the Marseilles coast (France) ArchiMer
Sartoretto, Stephane; Francour, Patrice.
Gorgonians are important organisms in the Mediterranean Sea, where they form rocky benthic communities. Four main species (3 Holaxonia and 1 Scleraxonia) are predominant in infra- and circalittoral communities of the northwestern Mediterranean basin. Other species, such as Eunicella verrucosa (Pallas, 1766), are more rarely encountered. The expansion to unusually shallow bathymetric levels has been noted in the region of Marseilles (France) (between 20 and 40 m depth). A ten-year monitoring of colonies was used to assess the growth rate according to age (size): from 3.33 cm year(-1) (height <15 cm) to 0.62 cm year(-1) (height >40 cm).

Bilan energetique d'une population naturelle de Crepidula fornicata dans le bassin de Marennes-Oleron ArchiMer
Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Heral, Maurice; Masse, H.
An energy budget has been evaluated for a natural population of Crepidula fornicata living at low water of spring tides in the oyster farming basin of Marennes-Oleron. This budget of production was estimated according to the position along the chain. The average biomass for an individual representative of the population was equivalent to 1.87 Kjoules, and the annual consumption C was 20.08 Kjoules/year. The energy budget expressed in percent of energy consummates was: C = Pg + Pr + Ps + R + F; 100 = 4.6 + 1.6 + 0.8 + 48 + 45. This budget is compared with literature data on other herbivorous gastropods and with those calculated for Crassostrea gigas in the same locality.
