The species of the genus Passiflora (Passifloraceae family) have been used as food, cosmetic and traditional herbal. As a result, the Passiflora species are widely cultivated and has an economic, medicinal and ornamental importance. The popular designation as ?passion fruit? and chemical profile of several Passiflora species remains unknown. The lack of chemical information contributes to the erroneous classification and adulteration. In recent years, special attention has been paid to the bioactivity and phytochemical profiles of several Passiflora species extracts. In this research, 1H NMR-based metabolic profiling coupled with chemometric tools was used to characterize and distinguish extracts obtained from different wild Passiflora species (P. alata,... |

A stress test is proposed for the evaluation of the physiological condition of fish larvae in nutritional studies. The test was used in a study of quantitative (n-3) highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA) requirements in larval <i>Lates calcarifer</i> and <i>Siganus guttatus</i>. It enabled to suggest fast intervention at reduced larval quality and allowed to prevent mass mortalities. The stress test offered valuable information for the quantification study of fatty acid requirements in marine fish larvae. In <i>Lates</i> demands for fatty acids were detected in metamorphosis. In <i>Siganus</i> on the other hand, the sensitivity of the larvae was considerably reduced after short (n-3) HUFA boosting of the... |

The standardization of requeijão cheese quality characteristics is a processing stage which is directly influenced by the chemical composition of the raw material. Fat and water concentrations are the main factors that cause variation in quality properties of the requeijão and, when not thoroughly controlled, may cause a lack in standardization of the food. Calculations of ingredients for effective standardization must be made in relation to the final product through of iterative calculations, which makes the manual process unfeasible. Thus, the objective of the present study was to develop a spreadsheet for ingredient calculation, with restrictions being the different concentrations of fat and water in order to standardize the final products. The... |

Consuming market increasingly requires that companies assure higher quality products. These companies in turn are in search of solutions to meet such requirements, and thus consolidate their image and credibility with consumers. Such initiatives lead to gains and make these companies more competitive so as to figure prominently in the markets they operate. This article aims to understand how Netuno Pescados uses HACCP - HAZARD ANALYSIS AND CRITICAL CONTROL POINT system, in order to assure a high safety level to products delivered to markets it serves. This system is based on the principle that biological, chemical and physical dangers may exist in several points of the industry. However, preventive measures can be taken to control them and remove potential... |

The vigor tests are important tools used in the internal quality control by the seed companies. The accelerated aging test is a sensitive method for assessing the vigor of seed lots, as well as for estimating their storage potential. However, for coffee seeds there is little information about its use and efficiency. The objective of this study was to investigate methods of the accelerated aging test suitable for Coffea arabica L. seeds. Two studies were carried out. In the first, different temperatures (42°C, 44°C, and 46°C) and exposure times (0, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, 168, and 192 h) were investigated for the accelerated aging test. In the second, the best combinations of temperatures and exposure times were tested on coffee seeds from five different... |

Eight WEFTA laboratories participated in two series of intercomparison exercises on sulfite determination in tropical shrimps. Samples of tropical shrimps were spiked with sodium metabisulfite (Na2S2O5) and hydroxymethylsulfonate (HMS) at a level of 25-90 mg SO2/kg. Most of the laboratories determined the sulfite content with (modified) methods of Monier-Williams or De Vries et al. The overall mean recovery of sulfite was rather low (47-60%), which may be attributed to an irreversible reaction of sulfite with the tropical shrimps. The repeatability of the methods within the participating laboratories was good. However, reproducibility among the laboratories was... |

The genus Calea belongs to the tribe Heliantheae and presents about 125 species. Calea serrata, popularly known as erva-de-cobra, chá-amargo and quebra-tudo, is an endemic species found in southern Brazil and is used in traditional medicine to treat ulcers and livers problems. The present work aimed to study the pharmacobotanical characters of leaves and stems of C. serrata for quality control purposes. The plant material was processed according to standard methods of light and scanning electron microscopy. Glandular capitate-stalked and capitate-sessile, uniseriate multicellular non-glandular trichome with tapered apical cell, conical non-glandular trichome, isobilateral mesophyll, secretory ducts near the endoderm and circular shape with six ribs in the... |

For sale or use of coffee seeds after harvest, the coffee grower must have information regarding their initial quality, which must meet the standards established in the Sistema Nacional de Sementes e Mudas (SNSM). However, slow germination of coffee seeds makes it difficult to obtain results from evaluation of the seed physiological quality. An alternative for quick evaluation of coffee seed viability is the tetrazolium test. However, there are still questions regarding the true potential of the test for estimating the quality of seed lots with different levels of quality. The aim of this study was to eval-uate the applicability of the tetrazolium test in estimating the viability of coffee seeds with different types of stress and levels of quality. Seeds... |

The software Seed Vigor Imaging System (SVIS®), has been successfully used to evaluate seed physiological potential by automated analyses of scanned seedlings. In this research, the efficiency of this system was compared to other tests accepted for assessing cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) seed vigor of distinct seed lots of Supremo and Safira cultivars. Seeds were subjected to germination, traditional and saturated salt accelerated aging, seedling emergence, seedling length and SVIS analyses (determination of vigor indices and seedling growth uniformity, lengths of primary root, hypocotyl and whole seedlings). It was also determined whether the definition of seedling growth/uniformity ratios affects the sensitivity of the SVIS®. Results showed that analyses... |
