Climate Policy Design under Uncertainty AgEcon
Pizer, William A..
The uncertainty surrounding both costs and benefits associated with global climate change mitigation creates enormous hurdles for scientists, stakeholders, and decision-makers. A key issue is how policy choices balance uncertainty about costs and benefits. This balance arises in terms of the time path of mitigation efforts as well as whether those efforts, by design, focus on effort or outcome. This paper considers two choices-price versus quantity controls and absolute versus relative/intensity emissions limits-demonstrating that price controls and intensity emissions limits favor certainty about cost over climate benefits and future emissions reductions. The paper then argues that in the near term, this favoritism is desired.

Determining factors for an increase in consumption of fresh vegetable by habitants in the Caribbean region of Colombia Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Martínez-Reina,Antonio María.
Abstract The aim of this study was to establish elements to understand the consumers reasons to increase the quantities of fresh vegetables consumed in the Caribbean Region of Colombia. With information from 308 surveys applied randomly in seven cities of the Caribbean Region and using a structured survey that included variables such as age, family composition, prices, income, a Logit econometric model was formulated. Furthermore, with the contingent valuation method, parameters were estimated using maximum likelihood; moreover, the reasons that explain the possibility that families increase vegetable consumption were identified. Results allow us to appreciate first that 53 % of the surveyed respondents would be willing to increase consumption. The...

Regulating Stock Externalities Under Uncertainty AgEcon
Newell, Richard G.; Pizer, William A..
Using a simple analytical model incorporating benefits of a stock, costs of adjusting the stock, and uncertainty in costs, we uncover several important principles governing the choice of price-based policies (e.g., taxes) relative to quantity-based policies (e.g., tradable permits) for controlling stock externalities. Applied to the problem of greenhouse gases and climate change, we find that a price-based instrument generates several times the expected net benefits of a quantity instrument. As in Weitzman (1974), the relative slopes of the marginal benefits and costs of controlling the externality continue to be critical determinants of the efficiency of prices relative to quantities, with flatter marginal benefits and steeper marginal costs favoring...

THE PRICE COMPETITIVENESS OF HUNGARIAN WINES IN EUROPEAN UNION MARKETS AgEcon
Bozsik, Norbert.
In the case of homogeneous goods (corn, eggs, milk, etc.) the price differential between products is the strongest determinant of success in market competition. In these days, however, it is more and more the highly processed foodstuffs that land on the consumer’s table. Wine is one of these. This study appraises the price competitiveness of Hungarian wines on EU markets. The question is to what extent do price differences determine the competitiveness of wine on potential markets? Or does a lower price give a real advantage to a special product like wine? Or is the demand for a product due to factors other than price? Our findings show that most Hungarian wines, except bottled white quality wines, are compatible on EU markets as far as prices are...

The Quality-Quantity Trade-off in the Principal-Agent Framework AgEcon
Olmos, Marta Fernandez; Martinez, Jorge Rosell.
This paper uses the principal-agent theory to analytically investigate the optimal incentive-based compensation contract that a processor should offer to a grower performing efforts in quantity and quality. In this process, we contribute to the substantive literature on multi-task principal-agent models by analyzing the quality-quantity trade-off and studying the implications of such a relationship in the principal-agent framework. One striking result of these effects is that, under appropriate incentive-based grower’s compensation, the processor may encourage grower’s effort in quality without crowding out grower’s effort in quantity.

Nowadays, there is a great interest in the research and the production of functional foods, such as isoflavones. Which present proven action on the prevention of health problems, such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Considering the importance of soybean supplements standardization, this study aimed identifying and quantifying the isoflavones in products sold at different pharmacies. Isoflavones samples were acquired in six different pharmacies specialized in the production of phytotherapic medications. The isoflavones were extracted, quantified and identified in HPLC. None of the samples, from different pharmacies, presented the isoflavones content presented on the label, i.e., 20 mg. In relation to the isoflavones profile, the highest levels found...

IBSS Repository
On results of long-term monitoring of Sevastopol coastal waters in 2000th the “water-bloom” caused largecell diatoms Proboscia alata is noted the first time. Its mass development in the waters which have been impoverished by mineral forms of biogenic elements allows to suppose at it a presence of abilities to myxtrophic method of feed.
