Red clover silage: an alternative for mitigating the impact of nitrogen excretion in ovine production systems R. Bras. Zootec.
Guzatti,Gabriela Cristina; Duchini,Paulo Gonçalves; Kozloski,Gilberto Vilmar; Niderkorn,Vincent; Ribeiro-Filho,Henrique Mendonça Nunes.
ABSTRACT The objective was to quantify the flow of intestinal nutrients and nitrogen excretion and retention in sheep receiving isoproteic diets. Eight Texel x Lacaune wethers (average body weight = 25±2.5 kg) were fitted with duodenal cannula and housed in metabolic cages. Wethers were assigned to the treatments in a crossover design with two periods of 20 days each, and all feces and urine produced by the wethers were collected. The treatments consisted of two isoproteic (160 g kg−1 of crude protein on dry matter basis) diets composed of red clover (RC) or lucerne (LU; Medicago sativa) silages plus corn silage and concentrate feed. The digestible organic matter and metabolizable energy intake did not differ between treatments. The intestinal non-ammonia...

The Antifungal Activity of Naphthoquinones: An Integrative Review Anais da ABC (AABC)
FUTURO,DÉBORA O.; FERREIRA,PATRICIA G.; NICOLETTI,CAROLINE D.; BORBA-SANTOS,LUANA P.; SILVA,FERNANDO C. DA; ROZENTAL,SONIA; FERREIRA,VITOR FRANCISCO.
ABSTRACT Naphthoquinones are the most commonly occurring type of quinones in nature. They are a diverse family of secondary metabolites that occur naturally in plants, lichens and various microorganisms. This subgroup is constantly being expanded through the discovery of new natural products and by the synthesis of new compounds via innovative techniques. Interest in quinones and the search for new biological activities within the members of this class have intensified in recent years, as evidenced by the evaluation of the potential antimicrobial activities of quinones. Among fungi of medical interest, yeasts of the genus Candida are of extreme importance due to their high frequency of colonization and infection in humans. The objective of this review is...

Toxicity to sea urchin egg development of the quinone fraction obtained from Auxemma oncocalyx BJMBR
Costa-Lotufo,L.V.; Ferreira,M.A.D.; Lemos,T.L.G.; Pessoa,O.D.L.; Viana,G.S.B.; Cunha,G.M.A..
Auxemma oncocalyx Taub. belongs to the Boraginaceae family and is native to the Brazilian northeast where it is known as "pau-branco". We investigated the ability of the water soluble fraction isolated from the heartwood of A. oncocalyx to inhibit sea urchin egg development. This fraction contains about 80% oncocalyxone A (quinone fraction), a compound known to possess strong cytotoxic and antitumor activities. In fact, the quinone fraction inhibited cleavage in a dose-dependent manner [IC50 of 18.4 (12.4-27.2) µg/ml, N = 6], and destroyed the embryos in the blastula stage [IC50 of 16.2 (13.7-19.2) µg/ml, N = 6]. We suggest that this activity is due to the presence of oncocalyxone A. In fact, these quinones present in A. oncocalyx extract have strong...
