Villanueva, Ching-maria.
This work is the result of a research on West African estuaries and lagoon ecosystems: estuaries of Sine-Saloum (Senegal) and the Gambia, (The Gambia), as well as the lagoons Ébrié (Ivory Coast) and Lake Nokoué (Benin). Estuaries and lagoons are highly productive and economically important ecosystems and are among those threatened as their biodiversity and productivity are constant exposed to various disturbances. These disturbances can weaken the stability and durability of these ecosystems. This led to the problematic raised in the thesis: To approach the African western ecosystems and the environmental pressures that they undergo that eventually affect the biodiversity and the trophic relations of their aquatic living resources. This work seeks to...

Empirical modelling of the growth of Ruditapes philippinarum by means of non linear regression on factorial coordinates ArchiMer
Goulletquer, Philippe; Bacher, Cedric.
In order to highlight the main factors accounting for the growth of clams in Marennes Oleron Bay, three locations were investigated in 1984-1985. First, factor analysis provided information on fluctuations of the environment. Second, principal components analysis was used to study ecological phenomena. The main axes explained the growth rate, which was included in an allometric model. Its properties were then studied by means of sensitivity analysis.

Heral, Maurice; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Razet, Daniel; Prou, Jean.
The flesh production of oysters is mainly related to concentrations of dissolved carbon and free amino acids. The younger oysters are dependent on concentrations of pheopigments while the production of the older ones is related to chlorophyll a values of the water-sediment interface. Shell production depends mainly on temperature, but also on the amount of food available: concentrations of dissolved carbon for the younger oysters and values in chlorophyll a of the interface for the older ones.

Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Heral, Maurice; Zanette, Yohann.
A relation between the evolution of biochemical components of molluscs and the available amount of food is difficult to establish. In addition to energy relations we tried to use a factorial correspondance analysis in the study on relation between the evolution of biochemical reserves of tissues of Crassostrea gigas Thunberg and the nutritional ability of the environment. The analysis showed a negative correlation between storing of carbohydrate and lipid reserves and amounts of mineral seston. In the same way, an accumulation of these reserves varies with the biomass of phytoplanctonic populations.

Heral, Maurice; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Prou, Jean; Razet, Daniel.
The study of the trophic relations needs to collect data which can best represent the variability of the populations of molluscan and the parameters of the water. For the water, the main parameters which play a role on the production of molluscan in an estuarine area are the temperature, the seston, and the phytoplanctonic biomass. For the temperature is proposed to sample only twice a month. At the contrary for seston variations which are very large on a tidal cycle and correlated with the currents and the waves, it is necessary to take in count this variability. For the phytoplancton, the annual cycle is well characterized, but the variability at a station is depending on the caracteristic of each water masses. The authors suggest that a sampling...

Structure and functions of Polychaetofauna living in Mytilus galloprovincialis assemblages in Thermaikos Gulf (north Aegean Sea) ArchiMer
Damianidis, P; Chintiroglou, Cc.
The purpose of this study is to examine the Polychaetes populations of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis Lamarck 1819 assemblage in Thessaloniki Bay (Perea, Neoi Epivates, Agia Triada) in space and time. Forty-eight Polychaetes species, which belong to 16 families, were identified among 10 593 individuals. The different distribution in space and time can be attributed to the life cycles of the Polychaetes, and also to the various biotic interactions. In general, the abundance follows the succession of the seasons, with some deviations though. Thus, the samples can be divided into two major groups, the winter and summer samples. The structure of the feeding guilds of the Polycheates population was also investigated and 9 different feeding guilds were...

Structure of the artificial hard substrate assemblages in ports in Thermaikos Gulf (North Aegean Sea) ArchiMer
Karalis, P; Antoniadou, C; Chintiroglou, C.
The present study describes the hard substrate assemblages established on the concrete blocks of three ports placed in gradually longer distances from the main source of pollution in Thermaikos Gulf. The samplings were performed on a seasonal basis for a 2-year period. The data analysis indicates a clear separation of the assemblages from each port. Evenness and Shannon-Weaver diversity indices were calculated and their values were found to be quite high. This fact, combined with the seasonal pattern that these assemblages hold, reveals stability and a good adaptation of their faunistic components to local environmental conditions. A change due to the construction of a new block functioning as a surge barrier was detectable at the station of N. Michaniona....
