Accumulation des sels nutritifs dans un sédiment lagunaire et environnement hydrodynamique ArchiMer

The Mejean-Perols Lagoon is situated on the French Mediterranean coast. It is a small (747 ha) and shallow (70 cm) lagoon. Some treated effluent from Montpellier flows into this hypereutrophic lagoon. The cartography of C, N and P concentrations in the sediment was studied based on 35 bottom samples. The nitrogen and organic carbon concentrations were more or less homogeneous, the highest concentrations being found in the middle of the lagoon. The phosphate was principally bound onto the sediment in the west zone. The observed distribution was independent of grain size, the distribution of which was rather homogeneous. Bilan méthodologique de l’outil de diagnostic de l’eutrophisation du RSL. Quatorze années de résultats en Région Languedoc-Roussillon ArchiMer
Ifremer.
Ce travail présente un bilan de l’outil de diagnostic de l’eutrophisation mis en oeuvre depuis 2000 dans le cadre du Réseau de Suivi Lagunaire. Cet outil repose sur l’étude de quatre compartiments : sédiments, macrophytes, colonne d’eau et phytoplancton. Un récapitulatif de la méthode actuelle de diagnostic et de ses évolutions depuis le début du RSL est présenté (pour chacun des compartiments puis pour la méthode de diagnostic complet). Des analyses statistiques ont permis d’étudier la pertinence de la stratégie de suivi et de la grille de diagnostic de chaque compartiment. The National Network of Observation (RNO) of the IFREMER is a monitoring network of the quality of the marine environment. This report is interested in the results of series of measurement from the RNO sediment of 1998 and relates to the analysis of the contamination of the coastal sediments from the Belgian coastal zone to Fécamp. L'objet de l'étude est l'exécution et l'interprétation d'essais sédimentologiques visant à mieux définir les caractéristiques mécaniques des vases et des biodépôts de Marennes-Oléron et à préciser les paramètres à introduire dans les lois d'érosion-dépôt. Les travaux de recherche présentés dans ce rapport s'intègrent dans le programme Charente-Marennes-Oléron, programme de recherche coordonnée pour l'analyse et la modélisation de l'écosystème du bassin de la Charente et de la zone littorale associée.

Contamination chimique des sédiments des lagunes méditerranéennes françaises - Bilan de la Campagne ROCCHSED 2017 ArchiMer

le Réseau d’Observation de la Contamination Chimique (ROCCH) évalue la qualité chimique du milieu marin à partir des concentrations en contaminants mesurées dans la chair de mollusques et dans le compartiment superficiel fin des sédiments prélevés sur les fonds. La campagne ROCCHSED2017 est la 4ème campagne d’échantillonnage dans les lagunes méditerranéennes françaises. Elle a permis la mesure de concentrations en éléments traces métalliques et en contaminants organiques (sur la base des listes des réglementations en vigueur) dans les sédiments de 13 lagunes.

Coprostanol levels and organic enrichment in sediments of the Bilbao estuary (north of Spain) ArchiMer

An assessment was made of the distribution of the faecal sterol coprostanol (COP) in sediments in the Bilbao estuary. Concentrations of COP ranged from 135.15 to 10.77 mu g g(-1) dry weight, from the inner to the open estuary, with a mean value of 51.43 mu g g(-1); the highest concentrations were found near the mouths of several tributaries flowing into the estuary. Comparisons with ether published values indicate that sediments from the Bilbao estuary are affected by sewage pollution in a similar degree to that reported for other estuaries in the world. (CS)-C-137 inventory in sediment near the Rhone mouth: role played by different sources ArchiMer

The low tidal range of the Mediterranean Sea and the high sediment load of the Rhone induce the formation of an important submarine delta. The Cs-137 inventory in sediment on a 480 km(2) area near the Rhone mouth reached 19.6 TBq in 1990. The spatial distribution of both sediment accumulation rates and (CS)-C-137 concentrations in this area confirm the existence of a spatially well-delimited zone, i.e. the prodelta, where both parameters are the highest. Thus, 40% of the total amount of Cs-137 stored in this 480 km(2) area was found within the prodelta (30 km(2)) in the close vicinity of the river mouth. Bacterial nitrification and denitrification were studied in the sediments of the Bassin d'Arcachon, a macrotidallagoon located in the Southwestern Atlantic French coast colonized by extensive Zostera noltii  meadows. Nitrifiers were enumerated by MPN method. Densities were law : from 102 to 104 bacteria per ml of sediment presenting an increase during winter. Nitrifying activities were measured by NH4+  accumulation N-serve block technique. Activities were ranged from 0 to 90 µmol m-2 h-1 and nitrification represented 120-140 mmol m-2 yr-1 for intertidal sediments. Effect of sediment nearness on the metabolic enzyme activity and energy state of the oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer

This study was designed to assess in situ the effects of sediment nearness on Crassostrea gigas metabolism. One year-old oysters were reared for 5 months (April-August) in plastic bags on metallic frames at 10 and 60 cm off the sediment at the beginning of April. The management of the energetic resources (storage, consumption) was estimated with respect to biochemical changes of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates. The accumulation of biodeposits brings about geochemical modifications of the underlying sediment, that are noticeable. The increase can reach 83% of the amount of organic carbon. By catching the deposits on the spot and by gathering them directly from the oyster tables we get a daily deposit that can weigh, according to season, between 8 and 99 g of carbon a square meter. The recycling of important quantities of organic matter increase the oxygen needs and the most reducing environment provides opportunities for ammonification and reduction of sulfate into sulfur. The respective influences of the sediment and of oyster (Crassostrea gigas) farming on the accumulation and the recycling of different forms of organic and inorganic nitrogen are described. Fluxes of dissolved inorganic and organic forms of nitrogen were studied between the water column, the water overlying the sediment and the pore waters, while for particulate forms the fluxes were studied between suspended material, the "biodeposits" (faeces and pseudofaeces of Crassostrea) and the sediment. Different treatments aiming to cure the grounds, which bad been contaminated by the vibrio P1 "brown-ring", have been carried out on some sites of on-growing, taking place in the Aber Benoit, in Brittany. The tested products were Lime, and an antiseptic "Agroseptil" which positive effects are admitted in pisciculture. The results (growth, survival and the presence of brown-ring), do not point out any difference between the various treatments. However, it looks as if the brownring has appeared latter than on other clam-fields located in the same area.This effect does not seem to be due to the various treatments of the soils, but to the antibiotic  bath of the clams bef ore seeding.

Etat de la pollution par les hydrocarbures dans l'Aber Benoit ArchiMer

The Aber Benoît, a small estuary on the North West coast of Brittany was polluted by oil from the Amoco Cadiz oil spill. Preliminary results from water and sediment samples taken in the estuary in May 1978, show that two months after the initial spill, high concentrations of hydrocarbures existed in the water and sediments of the estuary. The Aber Benoît shows a well developed salt wedge and upstream increasing suspended sediment concentrations. Oil was dispersed more or less evenly throughout the water column, in the entire length of the estuary. In the bottom sediments, oil had accumulated to depths of 30 cm. Sand bars appear to induce a trapping of oil in the estuary channel.

Since several years, the French oyster farming copes with high mortality affecting juveniles and some adults of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. Studies conducted in the framework of a multidisciplinary project (MOREST) showed that mortality was related to several factors like physiological and genetic status of oyster, pathogens including bacteria of the genus Vibrio, and revealed that the sediment, on which the oyster cages are installed, might play a particular role.
