In Winter 2017, the University of Massachusetts Amherst's Imaging Wind and Rain Airborne Profiler (IWRAP) was flown on a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) WP-3D Hurricane Hunter aircraft under the direction of scientists from Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR) at NOAA/National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) over the North Atlantic ocean out of Shannon, Ireland. Ocean doppler anomaly and ocean surface current from Sentinel 1 tops mode ArchiMer

Processing and analysis of Doppler information from Sentinel 1A Interferometric Wide (IW) and Extra Wide (EW) modes are performed for assessing the capabilities of mapping ocean surface current field. Data from Agulhas (South-Africa) and Norwegian Coast are used in combination with numerical models, higher-order satellite products, and Lagrangian drifters. Results show strong Doppler signal and dynamics from coastal areas caused by a mixture of surface current and wind/wave induced drifts at a spatial resolution of around 2 km2 in IW mode and 4km2 in EW mode. The EGIM aims to set up a number of ocean locations where the same set of core variables, including temperature, conductivity, pressure, dissolved O2, turbidity, ocean currents, and passive acoustics, are measured homogeneously: using identical hardware, the same sensor references, the same qualification methods, the same calibration methods, the same data format and access, and the same maintenance procedures.
