Cross-shelf exchanges in the northern Bay of Biscay ArchiMer
Akpınar, Anil; Charria, Guillaume; Theetten, Sebastien; Vandermeirsch, Frederic.
The spatio-temporal distribution of cross-shelf exchanges in the northern Bay of Biscay from 2007 to 2010 were investigated using a high-resolution three-dimensional model as well as sea-surface temperature and chlorophyll-a concentration satellite observations. Our results show that the net yearly mean transport was upslope each year, with 2010 showing the highest value (0.93 Sv upslope). Bottom fluxes showed peak values near Chapel Bank, with mean values of 0.1 m3 s−1 m−2 and maximum values of 0.2 m3 s−1 m−2. Our model demonstrated that cross-shelf exchanges can be divided into three vertical layers. At the surface, cross-shelf transports are driven by wind forcing (Ekman transport accounts for about 60% of the total cross-shelf transport) and mesoscale...

Echanges côte-large à moyenne échelle au niveau de la pente continentale du Golfe du Lion. Processus et Modélisation ArchiMer
Andre, Gael.
Dynamics of water mass exchanges between the Gulf of Lions (GoL) and the open sea are driven by several physical processes, which influence circulation at several spacio-temporal scales. This study, based on a realistic modelling during two years, aims to bring a better knowledge of circulation and hydrodynamics processes occurring in the NW Mediterranean Sea and in the GoL. Firstly, the NW Mediterranean Basin circulation modelled during the year 2001 is compared with Sea Surface Temperature (SST) satellite measurements (AVHRR) and with the MEDATLAS climatology. These comparisons show a good agreement concerning surface patterns and seasonal variability of the large scale circulation. At lower scale, several processes influence circulation over the shelf...

Flow structure and seasonalityin the Hebridean slope current ArchiMer
Souza, Aj; Simpson, Jh; Harikrishnan, M; Malarkey, J.
The intensity, structure and variability of the slope current have been determined from 16 months of observations with Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP) and conventional current meters on a cross-slope section at the Hebridean shelf edge during the Shelf Edge Study (SES) programme. After removal of the tidal signals, the mean flow over the upper slope is found to be closely parallel to the topography with speeds of . 20 cmEs.1. The flow extends down to a depth of 500 m and is predominantly barotropic, especially in winter when the flow is practically uniform between 350 m and the surface. In summer, there is a significant baroclinic component with a pronounced maximum in current at a depth of about 200 m but more than 80% of the kinetic energy is...

Lagrangian circulation of the North Atlantic Central Water over the abyssal plain and continental slopes of the Bay of Biscay: description of selected mesoscale features ArchiMer
Serpette, A; Le Cann, Bernard; Colas, Francois.
Between 1994 and 2001, several experiments (ARCANE, SEFOS, INTERAFOS) were conducted to directly measure the general and mesoscale Lagrangian circulations over the Bay of Biscay abyssal plain and slopes. Two levels (~100 m and ~450 m) were selected to cover the North Atlantic Central Water range. Two types of Lagrangian instruments, drogued surface drifters tracked by satellite (Surdrift) and acoustically tracked subsurface floats (Rafos and Marvor), were used. Overall, more than 36 instrument-years were collected in the Bay of Biscay region (43-49°N, 01-12°W). The weak general circulation in the Bay of Biscay is seen to be highly influenced by the occurrence of several mesoscale coherent features, notably slope currents and eddies, and these affect the...
