Der Boden, ein lebendiges Wesen Organic Eprints
Fuchs, Jacques G..

ENDOPHYTIC FUNGAL POPULATIONS ACTING ON SOIL SUPPRESSIVENESS IN FRUIT TREE ORCHARDS Organic Eprints
Manici, L.M.; Kelderer, Markus; Caputo, F.; Nicoletti , F.; Topp , A..
The aim of the present study was i) to identify the soil inhabiting endophytic fungal populations having beneficial impact on crop health; ii) to identify the biological processes responsible of this functional effect. Activity was performed on fungal populations extracted from the microbial population of soil samples coming from three apple growing areas of Europe. Functionalities of Fusarium oxysporum and binucleate Rhizoctonia observed in this study are two small examples of soil biological resources that could be exploited in organic agriculture for developing innovative cropping practices.

Grassland management, soil biota and ecosystem services in sandy soils Organic Eprints
Eekeren, N. van.
Recent legislative restrictions on the use of fertilizers and irrigation, and a quest for sustainable farming systems have drawn renewed attention to the functioning of the soil and the ecosystem services it provides. Soil biota play an important role in the provision of these ecosystem services, which may be influenced by grassland management. The two objectives of this thesis were 1) to gain insight into the effect of different grassland management measures on soil biota in sandy soils; and 2) to explore the effect of grassland management on the ecosystem services provided by soil biota.

Identifizierung und Charakterisierung der krankheitsunterdrückenden Mikroorganismen beim Komposteinsatz Organic Eprints
Oberhänsli, Thomas; Fuchs, Jacques; Thürig, Barbara; Widmer, Franco; Mayerhofer, Johanna; Ahrens, Christian; Stefanie, Lutz.

Management of soil suppressiveness against soil-borne diseases Organic Eprints
Tamm, L.; Thürig, B.; Bongiorno, G.; Postma, J.; Fuchs, J. G.; Oberhänsli, T..
Soils suppressive to soil-borne diseases have attracted the attention of farmers and researchers for decades and many suppressive soils have been described. Microorganisms and soil microbial communities involved in suppressiveness have been studied intensively, but the underlying mechanisms are still not well understood. Suppressiveness to soil- as well as air-borne diseases has been shown to be highly site-specific. We will review how suppressiveness can be influenced by agricultural practices. Suppressiveness destroyed e.g. by steam sterilisation of soils could only be partially restored on the short-term by re-inoculation of soils, and the success of re-inoculation depended on the soil matrix as well as on the inoculum used. Long-term management (e.g....

Nachbauprobleme im Apfelanbau in der Schweiz Organic Eprints
Naef, A..

Re-establishment of suppressiveness to soil- and air-borne diseases by re-inoculation of soil microbial communities Organic Eprints
Thürig, Barbara; Fließbach, Andreas; Berger, Nicole; Fuchs, Jacques G.; Kraus, Noemy; Mahlberg, Nicole; Nietlispach, Bruno; Tamm, Lucius.
The aim of this study was to investigate the potentials and limitations in restoring soil suppressiveness in disturbed soils. Soils from three sites in UK and Switzerland (STC, REC, THE) differing in their level of suppressiveness to soil-borne and air-borne diseases were γ-irradiated and this soil matrix was re-inoculated with 1% (w/w) of either parent native soil or native soil from the other sites (‘soil inoculum’). Suppressiveness to air-borne and soil-borne diseases was quantified by means of the host–pathogen systems Lepidium sativum (cress)–Pythium ultimum, an oomycete causing root rot and seedling damping-off, and Arabidopsis thaliana–Hyaloperonospora parasitica, an oomycete causing downy mildew. Soil microbial biomass, activity and community...

Regenwurmzönose - Auswirkungen von kupferhaltigen Pflanzenschutzmitteln auf die Bodenfruchtbarkeit unter Nutzung von Regenwürmern als Indikatoren am Beispiel Weinbau Organic Eprints
Strumpf, Thomas; Strassemeyer, Jörn; Herwig, Nadine; Horney, Peter; Felgentreu, Dieter; Hommel, Bernd; Krück, Stefanie.

Sustainable Cultivation of Truffles in Rural Regions of Finland Organic Eprints
Shamekh, Salem.
Truffles are rarely found in Finland, in spite of recent breakthroughs. In 2006, we initiated an effort to explore the possibility, and feasibility of truffle cultivation in Finland. This effort started by establishing the first truffle orchard in Juva. By 2016, we planted roughly 10 000 tree seedlings in 33 orchards. The results of our work indicated that even a boreal Finnish area is suitable for the sustainable organic production of truffles, and it appears that Tuber aestivum is a promising truffle species for future truffle orchards in northern conditions. Our results also show that restrictions caused by the Finnish winter climate and low soil temperatures can be overcome with proper soil and winter protection management. In conclusion, the selection...

Tracing of Two Pseudomonas Strains in the Rootand Rhizoplane of Maize, as Related to Their Plant Growth-Promoting Effectin Contrasting Soils Organic Eprints
Mosimann, Carla; Oberhänsli, Thomas; Ziegler, Dominik; Nassal, Dinah; Kandeler, Ellen; Boller, Thomas; Mäder, Paul; Thonar, Cécile.
TaqMan-based quantitative PCR (qPCR) assays were developed to study the persistence of two well-characterized strains of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), Pseudomonas fluorescens Pf153 and Pseudomonas sp. DSMZ 13134, in the root and rhizoplane of inoculated maize plants. This was performed in pot experiments with three contrasting field soils (Buus, Le Caron and DOK-M). Potential cross-reactivity of the qPCR assays was assessed with indigenous Pseudomonas and related bacterial species, which had been isolated from the rhizoplane of maize roots grown in the three soils and then characterized by Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization (MALDI) Time-of-Flight (TOF) mass spectrometry (MS). Sensitivity of the qPCR expressed as detection limit of...
