EFFECT OF SOIL TILLAGE AND PLANT RESIDUE ON SURFACE ROUGHNESS OF AN OXISOL UNDER SIMULATED RAIN Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Panachuki,Elói; Bertol,Ildegardis; Alves Sobrinho,Teodorico; Oliveira,Paulo Tarso Sanches de; Rodrigues,Dulce Buchala Bicca.
Surface roughness of the soil is formed by mechanical tillage and is also influenced by the kind and amount of plant residue, among other factors. Its persistence over time mainly depends on the fundamental characteristics of rain and soil type. However, few studies have been developed to evaluate these factors in Latossolos (Oxisols). In this study, we evaluated the effect of soil tillage and of amounts of plant residue on surface roughness of an Oxisol under simulated rain. Treatments consisted of the combination of the tillage systems of no-tillage (NT), conventional tillage (CT), and minimum tillage (MT) with rates of plant residue of 0, 1, and 2 Mg ha-1 of oats (Avena strigosa Schreb) and 0, 3, and 6 Mg ha-1 of maize (Zea mays L.). Seven simulated...

Temporal stability of soil moisture in an experimental watershed in the Pernambuco semi-arid region AGRIAMBI
Silva Junior,Valdemir P.; Montenegro,Abelardo A. A.; Melo,Rogério O. de.
ABSTRACT Soil moisture estimation is very important in decision making regarding agricultural practices and investigations in hydrology. The aim of the study was to evaluate surface soil moisture temporal stability under two cover crop conditions in an experimental watershed in the Brazilian semi-arid region, aiming to identify stable points, thus reducing monitoring costs and highlighting the importance of temporal stability in a watershed. Fourty five soil moisture monitoring campaigns in the layers of 0-0.10 and 0.10-0.20 m were conducted using a capacitance probe (Diviner – 2000®) during the period from 10/07/2010 to 03/25/2014, with soil cover under native bushy vegetation and degraded pasture, predominantly Brachiaria decumbens. Temporal stability...

USE OF USLE/ GIS TECHNOLOGY FOR IDENTIFYING CRITERIA FOR MONITORING SOIL EROSION LOSSES IN AGRICULTURAL AREAS REA
Botelho,Thiago H. A.; Jácomo,Simone de A.; Almeida,Rherison T. S.; Griebeler,Nori P..
ABSTRACT The assessment of land use and occupation is essential for predicting soil loss due to water erosion. The objective of this study was to determine criteria for monitoring soil loss in agricultural areas using the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE). Soil loss data were intersected with USLE factors and slope using geoprocessing techniques for the Samambaia River watershed, located in Cristalina, Goiás state, Brazil. A slope of 3% to 8% was found in approximately 50% of the study area. However, mean soil losses <10 t ha-1 year-1 were observed in slopes ≤ 3%, where the mean soil length (L) and slope steepness (S) were ≤2 and 0.2, respectively. The intersection of soil loss data with USLE factors was useful for identifying criteria for monitoring...

Visual assessment of pasture degradation: validation by ground cover and seasonal variation Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Monteiro,Edevaldo de Castro; Burak,Diego Lang; Cunha,Alexson de Mello; Passos,Renato Ribeiro; Mendonça,Eduardo de Sá.
ABSTRACT Visual assessments of pasture degradation levels are widespread because they are rapid, practical and inexpensive. However, they can be subjective, making it difficult to distinguish between degradation levels to establish management practices. This fact, in association with the lack of standardization of the number of levels and the assessment periods, suggests a need for further studies. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relation between the degradation levels of visually evaluated pastures and the soil cover measured in fields in summer and winter. Percentages of Brachiaria grass, bare soil, spontaneous vegetation (broad and narrow leaf) and mulch were evaluated in 35 areas with different levels of visual degradation. Canonical...
