The main objective of this study was to assess the impact of biochar rate (0, 8, 16 and 32 Mg ha-1) on the water retention capacity (WRC) of a sandy loam Dystric Plinthosol. The applied biochar was a by-product of slow pyrolysis (~450 °C) of eucalyptus wood, milled to pass through a 2000 micrometers sieve that resulted in a material with an intrinsic porosity less than or equal to 10 micrometers and a specific surface area of ~3.2 m2 g-1. The biochar was incorporated into the top 15 cm of the soil under an aerobic rice system. Our study focused on both the effects on WRC and rice yields 2 and 3 years after its application. Undisturbed soil samples were collected from 16 plots in two soil layers (5-10 and 15-20 cm). Soil water retention curves were modelled... |

There has been much effort to improve the performance of pedotransfer functions (PTFs) using intelligent algorithms, but the issue of covariate shift, i.e., different probability distributions in training and testing datasets, and its impact on prediction uncertainty of PTFs has been rarely addressed. The common practice in PTF generation is to randomly separate the dataset into training and testing subsets, and the outcomes of this random selection may be different if the process is subject to covariate shift. We evaluated the impact of covariate shift generated by data shuffling and detected by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for the prediction of water contents using soil databases from Denmark and Brazil. The soil water contents at different pressure heads... |

Fractal scaling has been applied to soils, both for void and solid phases, as an approach to characterize the porous arrangement, attempting to relate particle-size distribution to soil water retention and soil water dynamic properties. One important point of such an analysis is the assumption that the void space geometry of soils reflects its solid phase geometry, taking into account that soil pores are lined by the full range of particles, and that their fractal dimension, which expresses their tortuosity, could be evaluated by the fractal scaling of particle-size distribution. Other authors already concluded that although fractal scaling plays an important role in soil water retention and porosity, particle-size distribution alone is not sufficient to... |

The soil surface and porosity govern the capacity of soil to hold water. In soil science, many functions were developed to estimate parameters of equations to describe soil water retention and soil hydraulic properties. These functions were created using statistical techniques based in soil properties parameters less laborious and cheaply obtained than the direct measurements of soil hydraulic parameters. These functions are called pedotransfer functions (PTF) and fill the gap between the available soil data and the properties required for modeling soil water fluxes. The physically based equations approach to obtain functions of water retention and hydraulic conductivity of the porous media (soils) may be advantageous, as the predictors will not be select... |

Abstract: Pedotransfer functions (PTF) were developed to estimate the parameters of the van Genuchten model (1980) to describe soil water retention curves. The data came from various sources, mainly from studies conducted by universities in Northeast Brazil, by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa) and by a corporation for the development of the São Francisco and Parnaíba river basins (Codevasf), totaling 786 retention curves, which were divided into two data sets: 85 % for the development of PTFs, and 15 % for testing and validation, considered independent data. Aside from the development of general PTFs for all soils together, specific PTFs were developed for the soil classes Ultisols, Oxisols, Entisols, and Alfisols by multiple... |

Taking into account the nature of the hydrological processes involved in in situ measurement of Field Capacity (FC), this study proposes a variation of the definition of FC aiming not only at minimizing the inadequacies of its determination, but also at maintaining its original, practical meaning. Analysis of FC data for 22 Brazilian soils and additional FC data from the literature, all measured according to the proposed definition, which is based on a 48-h drainage time after infiltration by shallow ponding, indicates a weak dependency on the amount of infiltrated water, antecedent moisture level, soil morphology, and the level of the groundwater table, but a strong dependency on basic soil properties. The dependence on basic soil properties allowed... |

ABSTRACT Inceptsoils have high aluminum contents, and amendments are required to ensure a satisfactory crop development. Liming is efficient in neutralizing Al3+, but when applied to the topsoil its action is restricted to the surface layers, and sometimes lime incorporation into the soil is recommendable. However, tillage may negatively alter physical soil properties. Thus, gypsum could be an alternative to increase Ca2+ levels and reduce Al saturation in deeper layers, without requiring tillage. An experiment was initiated in 2010, to assess chemical and physical soil properties. Soil samples were collected in February 2013. A random block design with sub-subplots and two replications was used. Lime was applied to the surface of the main plot (0, 8 and... |

Volumetric core samples and loose soil samples were collected at 1 m interval in 10 m long transects, on three major soil groups in São Paulo, Brazil. The soil cores were used for soil desorption curves and the bulk density, and the loose soil was used for particle size analysis. The parameters obtained from the soil water retention model, bulk density and particle size values were submitted to geostatistical analysis to study the spatial variability through the examination of semivariograms and cross-semivariogram. The results showed that the scale of variation changes from soil to soil, with maximum variation for the Podzolic Soil with clay surface texture, from the northeast part of the state. For this soil also, the spatial autocorrelation was the most... |
