Inverse analysis was used to model the food webs of two intertidal mudflat ecosystems: Aiguillon Cove (AC) and Brouage Mudflat (BM) (south-western Atlantic coast, France). The aim of the present study is to describe and compare the functioning of these two ecosystems. The method of inverse analysis has been adapted in order to take into account, in a single calculation, two seasons: spring/summer (mid-March to mid-October) and autumn/winter (the rest of the year). Gathering all available data on the two sites, the most important gaps in knowledge were identified with the help of sensitivity analyses: they concerned mainly the exports of material by grazing fish (such as mullet Liza ramada), resuspension of microphytobenthos, and fluxes linked to microfauna... |

The aim of this work was the study a trickling biofilter, where water was circulated throughout the bed. In the first steady state experiment, the packing materials used were 25mm Pall rings. The airflow rate was increased gradually and the concentration of styrene in the air stream was held constant. In the second experiment, 15mm Pall rings were used. In this case, the feed contained both styrene and a small amount of acetone. The concentration of acetone and the air flow rate were kept constant, but the styrene inlet concentration was increased. The concentrations were measured at the input, and also at an intermediate and the outlet position in the biotrickling filter to determine the concentration profile along the reactor. Using the values of... |

Starting microalgae continuous culture generally includes a preliminary batch culture to obtain sufficient cell density. It is possible to apply continuous regime from the beginning of the culture (IC mode) rather than to begin by an initial batch (IB mode). It is our purpose to check that both initial modes lead to identical steady-state cell characteristics. The microalga Isochrysis galbana affinis Tahiti was used for this comparative study. With an initial cell density of 5 x 10(5) cell ml(-1) and a dilution rate of about 1.0 d(-1), both IB and IC modes led to identical cell density once steady-state is reached between 6 and 8 d after inoculation in the two cases. Cell concentration of chlorophyll a and pheopigment a were found to be similar for IB and... |
