A cost prediction model for machine operation in multi-field production systems Scientia Agricola
Sopegno,Alessandro; Busato,Patrizia; Berruto,Remigio; Romanelli,Thiago Libório.
ABSTRACT Capacity planning in agricultural field operations needs to give consideration to the operational system design which involves the selection and dimensioning of production components, such as machinery and equipment. Capacity planning models currently onstream are generally based on average norm data and not on specific farm data which may vary from year to year. In this paper a model is presented for predicting the cost of in-field and transport operations for multiple-field and multiple-crop production systems. A case study from a real production system is presented in order to demonstrate the model’s functionalities and its sensitivity to parameters known to be somewhat imprecise. It was shown that the proposed model can provide operation cost...

ANÁLISE DA ESTRATÉGIA TECNOLÓGICA EM EMPRESAS AGROINDUSTRIAIS – O CASO DA COLASCRIC AgEcon
Queiroz, Timoteo Ramos; Machado, Joao Guilherme de Camargo Ferraz; Bouroullec, Melise Dantas Machado.
The aim of this paper is to analyze the technological management in a dairy industry, making it possible to suggest improvements. An open-ended questionnaire was applied, considering two main points: the classification and comprehension of the company’s performance in relation to the technologies available and the understanding of the industry’s technological motivations, making it possible to analyze technological behaviors, forms of acquisition and adoption of technological innovations. It was observed that the company loses competitiveness due to the technology adopted, when compared to bigger players and when the distribution of its products is carried out through supermarkets. The changes introduced in the products’ portfolio were of public-domain,...

Caring Dairy: A Sustainable Dairy Farming Initiative in Europe AgEcon
van Calker, Klaas Jan; Antink, Rudi H.J. Hooch; Beldman, Alfons C.G.; Mauser, Anniek.
Interest in the concept of sustainability in dairy farming has grown as a result of the continuous pressure on farm incomes, occurrence of animal diseases with a major impact on the image of dairy farming, concerns about animal welfare, and environmental problems caused by agriculture. There are, however, still many gaps in the knowledge regarding sustainable dairy farming. Respecting the earth and the environment and "giving back to community" is a fully integrated part of the Mission Statement of ice cream maker Ben & Jerry's. Following this mission, they have initiated a sustainable dairy farming project, "Caring Dairy", for the European production based in the Netherlands. The aim of Caring Dairy is to secure dairy production in a more sustainable...

Coordination Strategy Decisions in Sao Paulo's Fresh Produce Markets: An Empirical Validation of the Peterson, Wysocki & Harsh Framework AgEcon
Mainville, Denise Y.; Peterson, H. Christopher.
This paper provides an empirical validation of the Peterson, Wysocki & Harsh (PWH) framework for coordination strategy decisions, drawing evidence from four firms' procurement strategies in São Paulo's fresh produce markets. The results support the hypothesis that the PWH framework provides empirical and theoretical insight into firm managers' coordination decisions. The cases show how asset specificity and complementarity affect the costliness of coordination decisions, how this costliness drives the decision to change coordination strategies, and how feasibility and risk/return criteria also apply. Additional insights into coordination strategy decisions that were generated in applying the framework and their potential relevance to the framework are...

COPING WITH TURBULENCE; STRATEGIES FOR AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH INSTITUTES AgEcon
Rutten, H..
1. Today, after having focused on Research, Extension and Education (the so-called 'REE-triptych') for over a century, the agricultural knowledge system is in a phase of transition. New roads should be taken to establish agricultural knowledge policies that will think ahead - both in the 'theory' and the 'practice' of knowledge processes. 2. Modeling innovation processes along linear perspectives is increasingly less productive; both knowledge-driven models (such as the classical REE concept) and market-driven perceptions are insufficient to implement a fresh and adequate policy of agricultural innovation. 3. Generating knowledge, developing technologies and skills, and innovating are three fundamentally different activities. Agricultural knowledge...

DEVELOPING A CORPORATE MANAGEMENT IN A JOINT-STOCK COMPANY AgEcon
Konopyanova, Galina.
Balanced and effective formalization of rules of corporate management are important for companies to implement reliable strategies and sustain on market. The paper outlines the board of directors’ responsibility within the OECD principles of corporate management. As the author states, relations between board of directors and a company management must be essentially improved in Kazakhstan. It is argued that the current state of board directors’ authority in Kazakhstan companies does not provide their involvement in developing and controlling strategic course and values on market.

Perceptions and Impacts of FRAM-A: A Norwegian Farm Business Development Programme AgEcon
Kjesbu, Erland; Flaten, Ola.
The FRAM-A(gro) programme has been initiated to improve Norwegian farmers' business and strategic management skills. This paper reports on an evaluation of the early projects. Key findings are that the learning model combining three approaches (theory, group learning and onfarm activities) was successful, and that farmers were satisfied with the one-to-one consultancy.

POSITIONING THE FARM BUSINESS AgEcon
Miller, Alan; Boehlje, Michael; Dobbins, Craig L..
Successful farming requires a clear understanding of the forces shaping agriculture and the direction that the farm is headed. Success also requires an effective method for executing and monitoring both strategic and operational plans. This paper provides an introduction to strategic planning and its application to the farm business. The material in this publication provides a brief description of the strategic planning process, reviews areas in which farm operators make strategic choices and some of the risks that accompany these strategic choices, illustrates the use of process planning methods as a means of linking strategy and operations, and describes the use of benchmarking as a method for monitoring progress and improving performance. While this...

Strategic Marketing Decisions for Organic Agricultural Producers AgEcon
Phillips, Jon C.; Peterson, H. Christopher.
A group of organic agricultural producers facing a strategic decision is featured. If they decide to form an organization to market their produce jointly, they will have to select a distribution channel. This case presents the demand conditions, requirements, advantages, and disadvantages of different distribution channels for organic vegetables, both on a general level and as they relate to this particular group. The following channels are addressed: roadside stands, farmers' markets, distributors, retailers, restaurants, institutions, and processors. Study questions for use in an academic course or workshop are included.
