Sunflower oil is naturally rich in both unsaturated fatty acids and numerous minor components, with high levels ofa-tocopherol and phytosterols that could play an important role in plant protection. These micronutriments, tocopherols and phytosterols, also exhibit health benefits for humans including reducing both cardiovascular diseases and aging disorders. a−Tocopherol represents more than 95% of total sunflower tocopherol and has the greatest vitaminic activity. Furthermore, this oil contains high amounts of β-sitosterol which is a promising health beneficial phytosterol. The objective of this study was to compare the content and composition of fatty acids, tocopherols and phytosterols in sunflower oil between different cultivars and... |

Background Strawberries are non-climacteric fruits with a low respiration rate, but are subject to serious fungal deterioration during postharvest handling. The edible coatings based on chitosan (CH), quinoa protein-chitosan (Q/CH) and quinoa protein-chitosan-sunflower oil (Q/CH/SO) may provide a solution to this problem. Thus, in this work CH, Q/CH and Q/CH/SO were elaborated and applied to fresh strawberries, and its effect on the strawberries shelf life during storage for 15 d was evaluated by mold and yeast count, fungal decay, carbon dioxide rate, physicochemical properties, and sensory evaluation. Results On all analysis days, the strawberries coated with the film-forming CH, Q/CH and Q/CH/SO solutions presented a significant lower amount of mold and... |

ABSTRACT: Using an adjuvant to optimize and increase the foliar activity of post emergence herbicides is an acceptable way to reduce their side effects. Field researches were conducted to detect a suitable adjuvant for two post-herbicides namely, isoproturon+tribenuron and pyroxsulam against little seed canary grass (Phalaris minor) and field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis). Treatments were, isoproturon+tribenuron at 1,025 g a.i. ha-1 (recommended dose) and pyroxsulam at 140.6 g a.i. ha-1 (recommended dose) alone or their reduced dose (75% of the recommended dose) isoproturon+tribenuron at 769 and pyroxsulam at 105.5 g a.i. ha-1, tank mixed with three different adjuvants viz. alkylethersulphate sodium salt at 400, fatty alcohol ethoxylate at 200 and... |

Abstract Bleaching is an important part of the oil refining process, in which pigments, impurities, traces of metals, and oxidative-molecular components of oils are removed. In this regard, the optimization of bleaching conditions can be effective to increase oil quality. In this study, de-gummed and neutralized sunflower oil was bleached at 80, 90, 100, 110, and 120 °C for 15, 25, 35, 45, and 55 min by acid-activated bleaching clay with the concentrations of 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1, and 1.2% under laboratory conditions. At that point, peroxide, anisidine, plus Totox values, free fatty acid content, Rancimat, and specific UV absorption at 232 and 270 nm were analyzed via the RSM method. The model optimization using the RSM method revealed that the optimal... |

In light of the increasing use of nanotechnology in food production, consumer acceptance of sunflower oil produced with nanotechnology or from genetically modified (GM) plants and the conventionally produced raw materials available in Temuco (Araucanía Region, Chile), market segments were differentiated with respect to their acceptance of nanotechnology and characterized according to their sociodemographic characteristics and food neophobia level. To achieve this aim, a survey was administered to 400 people. Using a conjoint analysis, the brand (33.6%) and production system (32.6%) were determined to be more important than the price (19.2%) and health certification (14.6%); national brands, produced conventionally with a health certification seal and sold... |

Abstract This study aimed to determine the oil ratios and fatty acid compositions of sunflowers grown in the warm climate of the Çukurova region at different sowing dates. It was found that the crude fat ratios of standard, mid-oleic and high-oleic sunflower types were 42.57%, 39.35% and 39.07%, respectively. Crude oil ratios of high-oleic and mid-oleic sunflower types were significantly decreased (p<0.05) at SD4 (sowing date 4, May 30th). The oleic acid contents in standard, mid-oleic and high-oleic sunflower types were found to be 60.08%, 74.35% and 88.1%, respectively. The oleic acid ratios of standard sunflower types were determined to be significantly lower at SD1 (April 15th) (p<0.05). The results show that it is more appropriate to sow the... |
