The upper Teles Pires River basin is a key hydrological resource for the state of Mato Grosso, but has suffered rapid land use and cover change. The basin includes areas of Cerrado biome, as well as transitional areas between the Amazon and Cerrado vegetation types, with intensive large-scale agriculture widely-spread throughout the region. The objective of this study was to explore the spatial and temporal dynamics of land use and cover change from 1986 to 2014 in the upper Teles Pires basin using remote sensing and GIS techniques. TM (Thematic Mapper) and TIRS (Thermal Infrared Sensor) sensor images aboard the Landsat 5 and Landsat 8, respectively, were employed for supervised classification using the "Classification Workflow" in ENVI 5.0. To evaluate... |

ABSTRACT. The Upper Paraguay Basin (hereafter, by the Portuguese acronym BAP) has great ecological importance to Brazil since it includes the Pantanal, one of the largest wetlands in the world. Monitoring the land use and the land cover (LULC) is strategic not only for the floodplain of BAP but also for its plateau since the floods in Pantanal are affected by the actions conducted in its surroundings. Part of the BAP area placed within the State of Mato Grosso is mapped by the TerraClass Amazon Project and, therefore, the LULC dynamics in these localities can be assessed through these official data. The aim of this study was to analyze the LULC dynamics in three municipalities in the State of Mato Grosso, Brazil, using the geospatial tools provided by a... |

Abstract: The objective of this work was to locate and quantify, through geotechnologies, areas that are currently used for annual agriculture in the Cerrado biome of Central Brazil, located within the boundaries defined by the homogeneous region of adaptation of wheat cultivars 4 and that present favorable conditions for rainfed wheat (Triticum aestivum) cultivation. The following information layers were crossed: use and coverage of the Cerrado biome, digital elevation model, and water requirement satisfaction index for wheat in the Cerrado biome. In addition, different levels of water stress (low, moderate, and high), risk levels (20, 30, and 40%), available soil water capacities (ASWCs) (35, 55, and 75 mm), cultivar cycles (105, 115, and 125 days), and... |

The Ventania System is a hilly area emerging in the extended Pampas plains of Argentina. Shallow soils with rock fragments and steep slopes are the main limitations for agriculture in this area. The effect of land use changes on annual soil loss on these soils in the Belisario Creek watershed was estimated. The universal soil loss equation (USLE) was applied for 1966 and 2016 to estimate soil loss generated by water erosion at the watershed scale. The equation was fed with rainfall, soil, slope, land use and management local data. Critical areas were identified using a geographic information system. The watershed has increased its fragility. For instance, the ranges of high and very high risk of soil loss (>50 Mg.ha-1.y-1.) increased their coverage from... |
