A flow-through test system for the study of toxicity and bioaccumulation processes is described. The apparatus can operate within a very wide range of flow rates. Flow deviations are less than 2% and the variation in test-agent concentration, (determined for copper) ranges from 3 to 8%. As a practical test a copper-toxicity experiment on adult Artemia was carried out and the results compared with data obtained from a similar but static assay. The results indicate that: - bioassay and accumulation experiments must preferably be carried out under flow-through conditions to keep the concentration and bioavailability of the toxicant as constant as possible;- the data analysis must be based upon measured test-solution toxicant-concentrations... |

Phytoplankton response to environmental pollution by oil and emulsifiers has been studied. The nanoplanktonic flagellate Platymonas tetrathele has been assayed with increasing concentrations of crude oil, industrial non-ionic emulsifiers and mixtures of these products. Cultures poisoned with an emulsifier with an aromatic solvent exhibited a very long lag phase. Diminished growth rates were observed for all the products tested most of the time at concentrations above 50 ppm. The mixtures showed a toxicity close to that of the emulsifier component at its concentration in the mixture and lower than that of the crude oil alone. Fine structure modifications have been investigated and the possible ecological effects of such pollution have... |

Although standardization of toxicity tests on aquatic organisms is an urgent necessity, very little has yet been achieved for the marine environment. As a first step in this direction, a simple, inexpensive and reliable short-term routine test with Artemia larvae is proposed. This test is the result of an extensive study in our laboratory, taking into account the advantages and disadvantages of Artemia bioassays published by various authors. The major advantage of the brine shrimp as a test species is its continuous availability under the form of dry cysts which can be hatched very easily; this eliminates all biological, technological, and financial problems of stock recruitment and/or culturing. The acute test... |

Considering the necessity for standardization of toxicity tests and the need for simple and reliable routine tests, the Artemia Reference Center at the State University of Ghent in Belgium has developed a short term standard toxicity test with Artemia nauplii. This simple and inexpensive bioassay which can be used as a screening test to determine the toxicity of chemicals to aquatic organisms, has been discussed in detail during a special workshop devoted to toxicity tests with brine shrimp, at the occasion of the "International Symposium on the brine shrimp Artemia salina"(Corpus Christi, Texas, USA; August 1979). Besides a few minor modifications, the test methodology was... |

Standardization of toxicity tests on aquatic organisms to detect the impact of chemicals on freshwater or marine ecosystems is an urgent necessity. From the variety of methods, criteria, and test species proposed, simple standardized tests for algae, crustaceans, and fish are now close to being adopted at the international level for the freshwater environment. Despite the same urgency, very little has been achieved for the marine environment. Artemia is an extremely suitable test-species since, contrary to all other organisms, it does not require continuous maintenance of stock cultures. Unfortunately none of the Artemia toxicity tests that have been worked out so far can be adopted as such as a representative standard... |

Over the past two decades, soil ecotoxicologists have made strides in utilizing the basic concepts and advancements in soil zoology and ecology. They have applied the existing tools, and developed new ones to investigate how chemical contamination can affect soil ecosystems, including the degradation or destruction of soil quality and habitats or the diminishment of belowground biodiversity. Soil ecotoxicologists are applying a suite of standard protocols, originally developed as laboratory tests with single chemicals (e.g., pesticides), and further enhancing both the approaches and protocols for the assessment of contaminated lands. However, ecological relevance of some approaches remains unresolved. The authors discuss the main challenges for a coherent... |

Considering the need for reliable standardized routine toxicity tests for the marine environment, a short-term bioassay with Artemia nauplii has been developed for routine testing. The major reason for the selection of brine shrimp as test species is the continuous availability of Artemia under the form of dry cysts from which the larvae are hatched very easily. This unique advantage solves one of the major problems of aquatic ecotoxicological tests, namely stock recruitment and/or culturing; the Artemia test can be performed anywhere and at any time from dry biological material available "on the shelf".An extensive study has been performed on various brine shrimp tests published in scientific... |

Because of their easy hatching from dry cysts and their year-round availability, nauplii of the brine shrimp Artemia salina are most convenient test organisms for toxicity studies. The bioassays mentioned in literature have, however, mostly been carried out with larvae of which neither the exact instar stage nor the geographical origin is known. The incubation of the cysts should always be carried out under strictly controlled temperature conditions since both the onset of hatching and the length of the hatching period are temperature-dependent. Moreover, the experiments should only be carried out with populations of nauplii of the same stage of development since it is demonstrated that the second and third instars are... |

The laboratory tests showed that the diflubenzuron does not present acute toxicity to shellfish and fish, but can affect the survival rate of Artemia salina and Palaemonetes varians, when its concentration rises to the level of its water solubility. The insecticide persistence in sea water had been found to be 3 weeks and its concentration factor in the fish after 52 days of exposure was very low. The use of dimilin in coastal zones for the eradication of caterpillars seems to have an insignificant impact on marine ecosystem, particularly on the molluscs. |
