Anatomo-pathological and epidemiological analysis of urinary tract lesions in dogs Ciência Rural
Sapin,Carolina da Fonseca; Silva-Mariano,Luisa Cerqueira; Bassi,Jordana Nunes; Grecco,Fabiane Borelli.
ABSTRACT: In dogs, diseases of the urinary tract are common and can be caused by disorders of varied etiology. The objective of this study was to classify qualitatively and quantitatively urinary tract lesions of 363 dogs, which were classified according to its anatomical distribution and etiology. The data was obtained from the revision of 36 years of protocols from the Regional Laboratory of Diagnosis (LRD/UFPel) and it represents 4.0% of diagnoses from a total of 8980 for that period and species. Renal injury accounted for 93.1% of cases, with 309 being primary kidney lesions; from which the main lesions were the tubulointerstitial nephritis (142 cases) often associated with Leptospirosis (47). Injuries of lower urinary tract accounted for 6.9% of the...

Chronic renal failure in equine due to ascending pyelonephritis predisposed by cauda equina syndrome: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Fonteque,J.H.; Granella,M.C.S.; Souza,A.F.; Mendes,R.P.; Schade,J.; Borelli,V.; Costa,A.; Costa,P.G..
ABSTRACT This report describes the case of a mare, of the Campeiro breed, used as an embryo donor, which had recurrent cystitis and urinary incontinence crisis. Clinical signs evolved to progressive weight loss, anorexia, apathy, and isolation from the group. Physical examination showed tail hypotonia, perineal hypalgesia, rectal and bladder sagging compatible with signs related to cauda equina syndrome. Complementary laboratory and sonographic assessment, and necropsy confirmed the diagnosis of chronic renal failure (CRF), which was attributed to the ascending pyelonephritis. The examination of urine culture showed growth of bacteria of the genus Streptococcus sp. This is a rare case in the equine species where the lower motor neuron dysfunction led the...

Enterococcal urinary tract infections in a university hospital: clinical studies BJID
Barros,Milton; Martinelli,Reinaldo; Rocha,Heonir.
Although urinary tract infections (UTI) represent the most common infection caused by enterococci, some aspects remain to be fully clarified. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical characteristics present in UTI caused by Enterococcus spp. in patients followed up at the Prof. Edgard Santos Teaching Hospital of the Federal University of Bahia. All patients consecutively examined between 1997 and 2005, who received a diagnosis of UTI caused by Enterococcus spp. were included in the study. UTI was defined as the presence of 10(5) colony-forming units per mL of urine. Standard microbiological techniques were used. During the study period, 6.2% of the urine cultures were positive for Enterococcus spp. The mean age of the patients was 48.9 years and...

A dog with abdominal trauma had an urethrorectal fistula and secundary bilateral hidronephrosis and hydroureter, identified by urethrocistography and excretory urography. According to our researches, only two cases of traumatic urethrorectal fistula had been reported until now in veterinary medicine.

Urinary secretory IgA after nutritional rehabilitation BJMBR
Teodósio,M.R.; Oliveira,E.C.M..
We studied the secretory IgA (sIgA) response of the mucosal urinary tract of malnourished children before and after nutritional rehabilitation. sIgA concentration (mg/l) was determined by ELISA in 187 children aged 3 months to 5 years. The children, who frequented a day care center, were divided into four groups, according to nutritional status: 57 were eutrophic, 49 were undergrown, 57 were moderately malnourished and 24 were severely malnourished. In addition, dip slide (Urotube, Roche) and dip-stick (Combur 9-Boehringer) tests showed that children had no bacteriuria or any other urinary abnormalities. Plasma albumin concentration (g/dl) was significantly lower (P<0.005) in the severely malnourished group (mean 3.0 ± 0.3 SD) than in the eutrophic...
