Vaccine efficacy and mortality in successive cohorts of children who routinely received either Edmonston-Zagreb high-titre (EZ-HT) or Schwarz standard (SW-STD) measles vaccines have been examined in a rural area of Senegal. The 2 vaccines were equally protective against measles infection (vaccination efficacy : EZ-HT 94 % ; SW-STD 93 %). Children who did not attend a scheduled session to receive measles vaccine had a higher mortality rate between 9 months and 2 years of age than did children receiveng either EZ-HT (mortality ratio [MR] = 1.81, 95 % confidence interval [CI] 1.06-3.08) or SW-STD measles vaccine (MR = 1.74, 95 % CI 0.95-3.21). Children of either sex vaccinated with EZ-HT had lower mortality than their equivalents who had not received any... |

The effects of the very virulent RB-1B strain of Marek's disease virus (MDV) and turkey herpesvirus (HVT), a vaccinal strain, on abundance of IFN mRNA in the blood were investigated. MDV and HVT infection did not change the circulating level of IFN-γ mRNA 1 and 7 days p.i., but they increased IFN-αmRNA levels slightly in genetically susceptible (to tumour development) B13/B13 chickens. The total number of circulating leukocytes was unchanged and increase in message was accompanied by an increase in circulating CD8α+ and MHC Class II+ cells. On the contrary, both viruses slightly increased IFN-γ transcripts and decreased IFN-α transcripts in genetically resistant B21/B21 chickens. Further, oncogenic MDV was able to block the response to inactivated... |

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommended the use of high titre measles vaccine in 1989. Subsequent long term follow-up of several trials yielded results suggesting higher mortality among children inoculated with medium and high titre vaccines compared to standard titre vaccines, although none of the individual trials found significant differences in mortality. Long term survival after standard, medium and high titre measles vaccines has been investigated in a combined analysis of all West African trials with mortality date. In trials from Guinea-Bissau, The Gambia and Senegal, children received medium or high titre vaccines from 4 months of age and were compared to control groups recruited at the same time later receiving standard titre vaccine from... |

A diphtheria and tetanus toxoid two-component acellular pertussis vaccine (DTaP), consisting of 25 microg glutaraldehyde-detoxified pertussis toxin (PT) and 25 microg native filamentous hemagglutinin (FHA), was compared with diphtheria and tetanus toxoid whole-cell pertussis vaccine (DTwP) in a randomized, double-blind manner in 286 Senegalese infants inoculated at two, four, and six months of age. In infants receiving DTaP a significantly lower rate of local reactions, crying and fever was observed than in infants receiving DTwP. One month after the third dose, the geometric mean titres for FHA antibodies were higher in the DTaP group, whereas increases in PT antibody titres were higher in the DTwP group. More than 90% of the infants had a fourfold or... |
