Agroholdings in Russia: Breaking the Vicious Circle? 31
Hockmann, Heinrich; Wandel, Jurgen; Nedoborovskyy, Andriy.
The paper discusses the accelerated emergence of agroholdings in the Russian Federation. It is argued that the foundation of these highly integrated structures I due to the special (macro-) economic and institutional condition of the transition process in Russia. Moreover, it is shown that agricultural enterprises which are part of an agroholding were lacking behind other organisational forms in terms of economic efficiency. One reason for this finding is the highly centralized decision structures which, as experiences in Western Europe shows, are only suitable for very special agricultural value chains, but not for agriculture in general.

Efficiency and Distribution in Contract Farming: The Case of Indian Poultry Growers 31
Ramaswami, Bharat; Birthal, Pratap Singh; Joshi, P.K..
This paper is an empirical analysis of the gains from contract farming in the case of poultry production in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. The paper finds that contract production is more efficient than noncontract production. The efficiency surplus is largely appropriated by the processor. Despite this, contract growers still gain appreciably from contracting in terms of lower risk and higher expected returns. Improved technology and production practices as well as the way in which the processor selects growers are what make these outcomes possible. In terms of observed and unobserved characteristics, contract growers have relatively poor prospects as independent growers. With contract production, these growers achieve incomes comparable to that of...

GESTÃO DO PROCESSO DE CAPTAÇÃO DE LEITE: UM ESTUDO DE CASO NA COOPERATIVA AGRÍCOLA ALTO RIO GRANDE LTDA (CAARG) 31
Ferreira, Antonio Pedro Vasco Batica; Santos, Antonio Carlos dos.
The aim of this work was to assess the milking process in an agricultural cooperative in Lavras, Minas Gerais state. The study was done between August and November/2004, employing a qualitative research methodology that involved the researchers and the cooperative’s employees. Process management promotes the organization and management of information in the company, favoring cost administration and control. The study presented some lines with average costs above R$ 1.51/Km, and others below. This fact could impair the efficiency of the process. To ensure quality, legal parameters were defined, through laboratory analysis, to classify the milk. The observance of the strong and weak points are the best way to maximize the organization’s efficiency. However,...

Innovation, Integration and Product Proliferation - Empirical Evidence for the Agri-Food Industry 31
Karantininis, Kostas; Sauer, Johannes; Furtan, William Hartley.
While mergers, both horizontal and vertical, have been shaping the landscape of the agri-food industry in Europe, the implications of the changing market structure on the level of innovation has not been studied yet. In this paper we deal with the link between innovation and market structure using the empirical example of the Danish agri-food industry. The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First we test for the importance of vertical integration on innovation. While there exist several studies on this linkage, to our knowledge, this is the first that deals with the agri-food industry. Secondly, we examine both product proliferation and innovation. To our knowledge, there are no other similar studies that examine both aspects using the same data set. We...

Polluters and Abaters 31
Nimubona, Alain-Desire; Bernard, Sinclair-Desgagne.
To comply with laws, regulations and social demands, polluting firms increasingly purchase the needed means from specialized suppliers. This paper analyzes this relatively recent phenomenon. We show how environmental regulation, the size of the output market, the elasticity of demand for abatement goods and services, and the fact that in-house and outsourced abatement expenses are substitutes or complements can influence a polluter’s make-or-buy decision. Specific features of abatement outsourcing are highlighted, qualifications and refinements of the theory of vertical integration are then proposed, and some consequences for environmental policy are briefly discussed.

The Organizational Evolution of Markets for Wood Products in the Southern United States 31
Dunn, Michael A.; Barnes, James N..
This paper represents the first case study attempt to develop a transaction cost conceptual model to describe industry evolution of the paper and lumber industries in the Southern United States around the late 1800s and early 1900s. We use transaction cost theory to explain the co-evolution of markets for wood products noting that variation in the level and type of investments made in physical and human capital assets needed to manage paper and lumber miller operations had a significant influence on the use of wood dealer systems compared to more vertically organized business arrangements. We identify some testable hypotheses and areas of future research.

Vertical Integration and Investor Protection in Developing Countries 31
Macchiavello, Rocco.
The industrial organization of developing countries is characterized by the pervasive use of subcontracting arrangements among small, financially constrained firms. This paper asks whether vertical integration relaxes those financial constraints. It shows that vertical integration trades off the benefits of joint liability against the costs of rendering the supply chain more opaque to external investors. In contrast to the commonly held view that pervasive input and capital market imperfections are conducive to vertical integration, the model predicts that the motives for vertical integration are not necessarily higher in developing countries. In particular, vertical integration is more likely to arise at intermediate levels of investor protection and...

Vertical Integration and Operational Flexibility 31
Michele, Moretto; Gianpaolo, Rossini.
The main aim of the paper is to highlight the relation between flexibility and vertical integration. To this purpose, we go through the selection of the optimal degree of vertical disintegration of a flexible firm which operates in a dynamic uncertain environment. The enterprise we model enjoys flexibility since it can switch from a certain amount of disintegration to vertical integration and viceversa. This means that the firm never loses vertical control, i.e., the ability to produce all inputs even when it buys them in the market. This sort of flexibility makes for results which are somehow contrary to the Industrial Organization recent literature and closer to the Operations Research results. In this sense we provide a bridge between the two approaches...
