Assessment of indicators of vitamin A status in non-cirrhotic chronic hepatitis C patients BJMBR
Santana,R.C.; Machado,A.A.; Martinelli,A.L.C.; Jordão,A.A.; Ramalho,L.N.Z.; Vannucchi,H..
Subjects with chronic liver disease are susceptible to hypovitaminosis A due to several factors. Therefore, identifying patients with vitamin deficiency and a requirement for vitamin supplementation is important. Most studies assessing vitamin A in the context of hepatic disorders are conducted using cirrhotic patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 43 non-cirrhotic patients with chronic hepatitis C to evaluate markers of vitamin A status represented by serum retinol, liver retinol, and serum retinol-binding protein levels. We also performed the relative dose-response test, which provides an indirect estimate of hepatic vitamin A reserves. These vitamin A indicators were assessed according to the stage of liver fibrosis using the METAVIR score...

Effect of dietary vitamin A on Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) skeletogenesis and larval quality ArchiMer
Fernandez, Ignacio; Pimentel, Marta S.; Ortiz-delgado, Juan B.; Hontoria, Francisco; Sarasquete, Carmen; Estevez, Alicia; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Gisbert, Enric.
The effects of different levels of vitamin A (VA) in Senegalese sole larval performance and development were evaluated by means of a dietary dose-response experiment using enriched Artemia metanauplii as a carrier of this micronutrient. Larvae were fed from 6 to 27 days post hatch (dph) with enriched Artemia containing graded levels of total VA (1.3, 2.1, 4.5 and 12.9 mu g VA mg(-1) DW). The content of VA in live prey directly affected its accumulation in larvae and early juveniles. Retinyl palmitate accumulated during larval ontogeny, whereas retinol showed the opposite trend, decreasing from hatching until 41 dph and then remaining constant until the end of the study. Inmetamorphic larvae (10 and 15 dph), VA did not affect the number of thyroid follicles...

Efficacy of the dietary histone deacetylase inhibitor butyrate alone or in combination with vitamin A against proliferation of MCF-7 human breast cancer cells BJMBR
Andrade,F.O.; Nagamine,M.K.; Conti,A. De; Chaible,L.M.; Fontelles,C.C.; Jordão Junior,A.A.; Vannucchi,H.; Dagli,M.L.Z.; Bassoli,B.K.; Moreno,F.S.; Ong,T.P..
The combined treatment with histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi) and retinoids has been suggested as a potential epigenetic strategy for the control of cancer. In the present study, we investigated the effects of treatment with butyrate, a dietary HDACi, combined with vitamin A on MCF-7 human breast cancer cells. Cell proliferation was evaluated by the crystal violet staining method. MCF-7 cells were plated at 5 x 10(4) cells/mL and treated with butyrate (1 mM) alone or combined with vitamin A (10 µM) for 24 to 120 h. Cell proliferation inhibition was 34, 10 and 46% following treatment with butyrate, vitamin A and their combination, respectively, suggesting that vitamin A potentiated the inhibitory activities of butyrate. Furthermore, exposure to this...

Estimation of heritabilities and gene number in the production of provitamin A in carrots. Repositório Alice
SANTOS, C.A.F.; SIMON, P.W..
Broad sense heritabilities and estimates of the number of factors or genes involved in the productjon of phytoene, -carotene, -carotene, a-carotene, Iycopene and total carotenoids were estimated in two different crosses of carrot (Daucus carota L.) with different backgrounds. F2 plants segregating for absence of a-carotene were identified in the cross B493 x QAL. HPLC chromatograms revealed that most of the increase of total carotenoids in high intensity mass selection (HCM), cycle 13, was due to jncrease of a-carotene content than {3-carotene. Broad sense heritabilities values were around or greater than 50% for {3- carotene, -carotene, Iycopene, phytoene and total carotenoid and around 35% for a- carotene in the cross Brasilia x HCM. In the cross orange...

Influence nutritionnelle de la vitamine A et de la nature des lipides sur la morphogenèse de la larve de bar (Dicentrarchus labrax): implicaton de la voie des rétinoïdes ArchiMer
Villeneuve, Laure.
The aim of this study was to determine the nutritional effects of vitamin A and PUFA (including EPA and DHA) on sea bass larvae development. An excess of vitamin A in the diet led to malformations affecting the cephalic region linked to an increase of RARgama transcription and the loss of a vertebra when larvae were fed this diet from 8 days post hatch (dph) to 13 dph. A diet containing an excess of PUFA disrupted the development of larvae vertebral column, deformities were correlated to a decrease of RARalpha, RARgama, RXRalpha and BMP4 transcription and an additional vertebra appeared when larvae were fed this diet from 8 dph to 13 dph. A diet containing 31 mg/kg of dry matter of vitamin A and between 1.1 and 2.3% of EPA + DHA allows larvae to develop...

Intake of high levels of vitamin A and polyunsaturated fatty acids during different developmental periods modifies the expression of morphogenesis genes in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) ArchiMer
Villeneuve, Laure; Gisbert, Enric; Moriceau, Jacques; Cahu, Chantal; Zambonino, Jose-luis.
The effect of the feeding period on larval development was investigated in European sea bass larvae by considering the expression level of some genes involved in morphogenesis. Larvae were fed a control diet except during three different periods (period A: from 8 to 13 d post-hatching (dph); period B: from 13 to 18 dph; period C: from 18 to 23 dph) with two compound diets containing high levels of vitamin A or PUFA. European sea bass morphogenesis was affected by these two dietary nutrients during the early stages of development. The genes involved in morphogenesis could be modulated between 8 and 13 dph, and our results indicated that retinoids and fatty acids influenced two different molecular pathways that in turn implicated two different gene cascades,...

Larval performance and skeletal deformities in farmed gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) fed with graded levels of Vitamin A enriched rotifers (Brachionus plicatilis) ArchiMer
Fernandez, I; Hontoria, F; Ortiz Delgado, J; Kotzamanis, Y; Estevez, A; Zambonino, Jose-luis; Gisbert, E.
Several nutritional studies have found a direct effect of several vitamins in chondrogenic and osteogenic development during early life stages of marine fish species. In the present study, the effect of vitamin A (VA) in gilthead sea bream skeletogenesis was evaluated by means of four different dietary regimes (enriched rotifers) containing increasing levels of total VA (75,109, 188 and 723 ng total VA mg(-1) DW). Dietary treatments were offered to larvae during the rotifer-feeding phase (4-20 days after hatching), while later all groups were fed with Artemia nauplii and weaned onto the same inert diet. Different dietary doses of VA affected gilthead sea bream larval growth, survival, performance (maturation of the digestive system) and quality (incidence...

Mikronährstoffmangel? Ein gesundheitsökonomischer Bewertungsansatz AgEcon
Zimmermann, Roukayatou; Stein, Alexander J.; Qaim, Matin.
Micronutrient malnutrition is a serious problem in many developing countries. Recently, agricultural technologies have been discussed as a complement to other intervention programs. Plant breeding, targeted at developing staple foods with higher contents of essential vitamins and trace minerals, could benefit the poor in particular. Yet, the economic repercussions of such innovations are still unclear. Because traditional models of technology assessment are inappropriate to capture the specific ramifications, we suggest a health economics approach. Herein, micronutrient malnutrition is understood as a phenomenon that causes health costs through diseases and premature deaths. Details of the methodology are discussed within an ex ante study of Golden Rice in...

ABSTRACT The study was conducted to determine the interaction of types of maize (Provitamin A-biofortified maize (PABM) versus white maize) and strain of laying birds (Amberlink and Hyline) on nutritional quality of eggs. Twenty-one of each of Amberlink and Hyline laying hens were fed on three diets for 30 days. Birds were distributed in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement constituting three diets (0, 50 or 100 % of PABM) and two strains (Amberlink & Hyline). There was a diet × strain interaction on egg shell weight, average daily feed intake, egg production, egg weight and egg shell thickness. Eggs produced by layers under 100 % PABM had lighter eggshell weight and lower eggshell percentage. In contrast, eggs produced by layers under 50 % PABM diet had...
