Subjects with chronic liver disease are susceptible to hypovitaminosis A due to several factors. Therefore, identifying patients with vitamin deficiency and a requirement for vitamin supplementation is important. Most studies assessing vitamin A in the context of hepatic disorders are conducted using cirrhotic patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted in 43 non-cirrhotic patients with chronic hepatitis C to evaluate markers of vitamin A status represented by serum retinol, liver retinol, and serum retinol-binding protein levels. We also performed the relative dose-response test, which provides an indirect estimate of hepatic vitamin A reserves. These vitamin A indicators were assessed according to the stage of liver fibrosis using the METAVIR score... |

The effects of different levels of vitamin A (VA) in Senegalese sole larval performance and development were evaluated by means of a dietary dose-response experiment using enriched Artemia metanauplii as a carrier of this micronutrient. Larvae were fed from 6 to 27 days post hatch (dph) with enriched Artemia containing graded levels of total VA (1.3, 2.1, 4.5 and 12.9 mu g VA mg(-1) DW). The content of VA in live prey directly affected its accumulation in larvae and early juveniles. Retinyl palmitate accumulated during larval ontogeny, whereas retinol showed the opposite trend, decreasing from hatching until 41 dph and then remaining constant until the end of the study. Inmetamorphic larvae (10 and 15 dph), VA did not affect the number of thyroid follicles... |

The combined treatment with histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi) and retinoids has been suggested as a potential epigenetic strategy for the control of cancer. In the present study, we investigated the effects of treatment with butyrate, a dietary HDACi, combined with vitamin A on MCF-7 human breast cancer cells. Cell proliferation was evaluated by the crystal violet staining method. MCF-7 cells were plated at 5 x 10(4) cells/mL and treated with butyrate (1 mM) alone or combined with vitamin A (10 µM) for 24 to 120 h. Cell proliferation inhibition was 34, 10 and 46% following treatment with butyrate, vitamin A and their combination, respectively, suggesting that vitamin A potentiated the inhibitory activities of butyrate. Furthermore, exposure to this... |

The effect of wheat-based diet (WBD), supplemented with xylanase and surplus vitamin A, on performance, nutrient digestibility, intestinal morphology and digesta viscosity of broiler chickens was investigated. Based on a completely randomized design, 240-day-old chickens were randomly divided into six experimental diets and four replications with 10 chickens each. Experimental diets consisted of corn-based diet (CBD) (T1), WBD with routine amounts of vitamin A (9000 IU kg-1) (T2), T2 without vitamin A in premix (T3), T2 + 6000 IU kg-1 vitamin A (T4), T2 + 420 IU kg-1 xylanase (T5), and T2 + 6000 IU kg-1 vitamin A + 420 IU kg-1 xylanase (T6). For Feed Conversion Rate (FCR) between day 1 and 21 and between day 21 and 42 WBD supplemented with vitamin A and... |

The effect of the feeding period on larval development was investigated in European sea bass larvae by considering the expression level of some genes involved in morphogenesis. Larvae were fed a control diet except during three different periods (period A: from 8 to 13 d post-hatching (dph); period B: from 13 to 18 dph; period C: from 18 to 23 dph) with two compound diets containing high levels of vitamin A or PUFA. European sea bass morphogenesis was affected by these two dietary nutrients during the early stages of development. The genes involved in morphogenesis could be modulated between 8 and 13 dph, and our results indicated that retinoids and fatty acids influenced two different molecular pathways that in turn implicated two different gene cascades,... |

Several nutritional studies have found a direct effect of several vitamins in chondrogenic and osteogenic development during early life stages of marine fish species. In the present study, the effect of vitamin A (VA) in gilthead sea bream skeletogenesis was evaluated by means of four different dietary regimes (enriched rotifers) containing increasing levels of total VA (75,109, 188 and 723 ng total VA mg(-1) DW). Dietary treatments were offered to larvae during the rotifer-feeding phase (4-20 days after hatching), while later all groups were fed with Artemia nauplii and weaned onto the same inert diet. Different dietary doses of VA affected gilthead sea bream larval growth, survival, performance (maturation of the digestive system) and quality (incidence... |

ABSTRACT The study was conducted to determine the interaction of types of maize (Provitamin A-biofortified maize (PABM) versus white maize) and strain of laying birds (Amberlink and Hyline) on nutritional quality of eggs. Twenty-one of each of Amberlink and Hyline laying hens were fed on three diets for 30 days. Birds were distributed in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement constituting three diets (0, 50 or 100 % of PABM) and two strains (Amberlink & Hyline). There was a diet × strain interaction on egg shell weight, average daily feed intake, egg production, egg weight and egg shell thickness. Eggs produced by layers under 100 % PABM had lighter eggshell weight and lower eggshell percentage. In contrast, eggs produced by layers under 50 % PABM diet had... |

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of graded levels of dietary vitamin A on sea bass larval performances and to determine optimal retinol levels at different larval stages to avoid specific skeletal malformations. Retinol was incorporated into larval feeds at 0, 5,10,15, 25, 35 and 70 mg kg(-1) dry matter (giving rise to RET0, RET5, RET10, RET15, RET25, RET35, RET70 groups, respectively). Analysis of the several types of deformities affecting the skull, vertebral column or fins of the fish were observed depending on experimental groups. On one hand, the incidence of skull malformations affecting the maxillary and premaxillary bones. dentaries, operculum, branchiostegal rays and glossohyal was lower for the RET0 and RET5 groups. On the... |

ABSTRACT One of the factors that hinder the usability of Cerrado fruits is their perishable nature, requiring industrial processing to ensure prolonged shelf life. This study aims to determine the optimal foaming agent for industrial processing of this fruit, and to evaluate the physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant activity of dried cagaita powder (Eugenia dysenterica DC) in foam layers at temperatures of 40, 50, 60, and 70 °C. The effectiveness of three foaming agents at various concentrations were tested, and suitable agents were identified based on a factorial analysis of density, expansion, and stability. The physicochemical characteristics of the powder, along with its vitamin A and C and total carotenoid content and antioxidant activity,... |

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to examine serum retinol and some mineral (zinc, iron, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and copper) levels in seven Mangalarga Marchador colts aged 329.48 days, reared on pasture in the city of Montes Claros, MG, Brazil, during the dry season. Equines were evaluated for four periods of 45 days during the total study period of five months. The foals had access to Panicum maximum cv. Tanzania pasture, while water and mineral salt lick were provided ad libitum. Blood samples were taken to determine serum retinol and levels of minerals, along with pasture samples to quantify beta-carotene in the grass. The results indicated that retinol levels varied (2.87 to 1.97 µg/dL) and remained below the standard levels. The levels... |

Vitamin A (retinol) and its congeners - the retinoids - participate in a panoply of biological events, as for instance cell differentiation, proliferation, survival, and death, necessary to maintain tissue homeostasis. Furthermore, such molecules may be applied as therapeutic agents in the case of some diseases, including dermatological disturbances, immunodeficiency, and cancer (mainly leukemia). In spite of this, there is a growing body of evidences showing that vitamin A doses exceeding the nutritional requirements may lead to negative consequences, including bioenergetics state dysfunction, redox impairment, altered cellular signaling, and cell death or proliferation, depending on the cell type. Neurotoxicity has long been demonstrated as a possible... |
