Capacité des moules dans la réduction des teneurs en nutriments et la charge bactérienne dans les effluents piscicoles OceanDocs
Chebil Ajjabi, L.; Romdhane, M.S.; El Abed, A..
Due to the necessity to protect the surrounding environment and very specially the inner and coastal waters, were studied different wastewaters systems for their application in facilities without treatment plants. In the very special case of the fishing industry, where only 14 establishments (from 42 active up to the moment) have treatment system, one requires of the study of different alternatives that contribute with the diminishing of the polluting load until permissible values. By such reasons, in addition to the study that was doing to explore and propose a treatment system by high rate pond with the microalgae Chlorella spp., empirical and kinetic equations were calculated using biochemical oxygen demand values, with the objective to facilitate the...

Effect of glutaraldehyde biocide on laboratory-scale rotating biological contactors and biocide efficacy Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Laopaiboon,Lakkana; Phukoetphim,Niphaphat; Laopaiboon,Pattana.
The effect of glutaraldehyde, a commercial biocide widely used in paper and pulp industry, on the performance of laboratory-scale rotating biological contactors (RBCs) as well as biocide efficacy was studied. Biofilms were established on the RBCs and then exposed to 0 - 180 ppm glutaraldehyde at a dilution rate of 1.60 h-1. The results showed that the biofilms became acclimated to glutaraldehyde and eventually could degrade it. Acclimation to the biocide took longer at the higher biocide concentrations. The degree of biocide degradation and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal depended on acclimation period, the presence of other organic matters and the amount of mineral salts available. Glutaraldehyde at up to 80 ppm had no effect on treatment efficiency...

Etude comparative de l’absorption de l’azote par deux espèces d’algues rouges : <Gracilaria verrucosa> (Hudson) papenfuss, 1950 et Gracilaria <Bursa-pastoris> (gmelin) silva, 1952. OceanDocs
Romdhane, M.S.; Chebil-Ajjabi, L.; El Abed, A..

HYDRAULIC CONDUCTIVITY VARIABILITY IN HORIZONTAL SUBSURFACE FLOW CONSTRUCTED WETLANDS REA
Baptestini,Gheila C. F.; Matos,Antonio T.; Martinez,Mauro A.; Borges,Alisson C.; Matos,Mateus P..
ABSTRACT Many modifications in hydrodynamic conditions occur inside the bed of a horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland (HSSF–CW) in operation. Studies on hydraulic conductivity measurement techniques in HSSF–CW are imperative since the monitoring of flow conditions is essential for understanding and controlling its clogging. This study aimed to assess the hydrodynamic behavior in HSSF–CW by means of saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) analysis. For this, six HSSF–CW were used: two non-cultivated (control), two cultivated with Tifton 85 (Cynodon spp.), and two cultivated with alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides). Application of swine wastewater (SW) in HSSF–CW started on June 15, 2011, with Ks measurement period between September 9 and...

Low-cost options for reducing consumer health risks from farm to fork where crops are irrigated with polluted water in West Africa. AgEcon
Amoah, Philip; Keraita, Bernard; Akple, Maxwell; Drechsel, Pay; Abaidoo, Robert Clement; Konradsen, Flemming.
To identify interventions which reduce health risks of consumers where highly polluted irrigation water is used to irrigate vegetables in West Africa, scientists worked over 5 years with farmers, market traders and street food vendors in Ghana. The most promising low-cost interventions with high adoption potential were analyzed for their ability to reduce common levels of pathogens (counts of fecal coliforms and helminth eggs). The analysis showed the combination potential of various interventions, especially on-farm and during vegetable washing in line with the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. The tested market-based interventions were important to prevent new or additional contamination.

Microalgal wastewater treatment-systems: potentials and limits OMA
De Pauw, N.; Van Vaerenbergh, E..
Algae can play a positive role in wastewater treatment by recycling of nutrients, by taking up carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, by reducing the nutrient load through stripping and precipitation, by producing oxygen for bacterial decomposition of organic matter, by eliminating pathogenic bacteria through bactericide action, and last but not least by solving odor problems. If sufficient insolation, and space are available, intensive algal wastewater treatment-systems proved to be valuable and promising alternatives to conventional treatment systems based on activated sludge or trickling filters. The various technologies developed for algal wastewater treatment are commented in this review. They include simple stabilization-oxidation ponds, as well as more...

Microbial dynamics during azo dye degradation in a UASB reactor supplied with yeast extract BJM
Silva,S.Q.; Silva,D.C.; Lanna,M.C.S.; Baeta,B.E.L.; Aquino,S.F..
The present work aimed to investigate the microbial dynamics during the anaerobic treatment of the azo dye blue HRFL in bench scale upflow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor operated at ambient temperature. Sludge samples were collected under distinct operational phases, when the reactor were stable (low variation of color removal), to assess the effect of glucose and yeast extract as source of carbon and redox mediators, respectively. Reactors performance was evaluated based on COD (chemical oxygen demand) and color removal. The microbial dynamics were investigated by PCR-DGGE (Polimerase Chain Reaction - Denaturing Gradient of Gel Electrophoresis) technique by comparing the 16S rDNA profiles among samples. The results suggest that the composition of...

Nickel biosorption by Acinetobacter baumannii and Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from industrial wastewater BJM
Rodríguez,Carlos E.; Quesada,Adolfo.
Nickel biosorption ability was evaluated in two bacterial strains: Acinetobacter baumannii UCR-2971 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa UCR-2957, resulting in greatest adsorption at pH 4.5 and a residence time of 100 minutes. Biosorption isotherms showed that the process follows the Langmuir model. The maximum adsorption rates (Nmax) were 8.8 and 5.7 mg·g-1 for A. baumannii and P. aeruginosa, respectively; however, affinity constants suggest that P. aeruginosa (K=1.28) has higher affinity for nickel than A. baumannii (K=0.68). It is suggested that both strains could be used for wastewater treatment, as long as the concentration of Ni2+ is within the range of mg·L-1.

Nitrification in hybrid reactor with a recycled plastic support material BABT
Wolff,Delmira Beatriz; Ochoa,Juan Carlos; Paul,Etienne; Costa,Rejane Helena Ribeiro da.
This work investigated the nitrification in a hybrid moving bed pilot scale reactor, which used a low density recycled plastic support material for biomass growth. The filling rate was 20% of its working volume (22L). The feeding and recirculation outflow was 45L/day. The reactor operated at a temperature of 16ºC, in two phases, according to the sludge retention time (SRT): A phase was 10 days and B phase was 3 days (average values). The applied average volumetric nitrogen and organic loads were 0.16KgTKN/m3.day and 1kgCOD/m³.day, respectively. The results showed an average nitrogen removal of 95% and average COD removal of 89%, in both A and B phases. Nitrogen removal rates were independents of the SRT.

Optimizing the operational conditions of a membrane bioreactor used for domestic wastewater treatment BABT
Viana,Priscilla Zuconi; Nobrega,Ronaldo; Jordão,Eduardo Pacheco; Azevedo,José Paulo Soares de.
This study evaluated the performance of a sidestream membrane module combined with an aeration system for the treatment of municipal wastewater. To investigate the membrane's behavior and to control fouling, trials in laboratory units were conducted. In these tests, optimal values were established for some operational parameters, such as crossflow velocity, transmembrane pressure and air supply to continuously flush the membrane surface. Air supply improved the behavior of the permeate flux over time. After six hours operation, the stabilized flux was 35 L/m².h at a total pressure of 0.40 bar (wastewater pressure of 0.05 bar and air pressure of 0.35 bar) and Reynolds Number of 4,600. All permeate samples analyzed indicated absence of fecal coliform and...

OUTDOOR CULTIVATION OF Scenedesmus obliquus BR003 IN STIRRED TANKS BY AIRLIFT REA
Pereira,Emanuele G.; Martins,Marcio A.; Mendes,Mariana dos S. A.; Mendes,Leonardo B. B.; Nesi,Adriano Nunes.
ABSTRACT: The use of microalgae as a source of raw material for biofuel production has been highly targeted. Compared to other biological options for the capture and use of CO2, microalgae crops have the following advantages: high productivity, lack of competition with feed and food-based products, use of unproductive and non-arable land, and allowance of the use of wastewater for its cultivation. The use of wastewater from industrial, agricultural, and domestic sewage has been indicated as an alternative means to reduce the cost of crops, since such waste is generally released into the environment without previous treatment. This work addresses the use of petrochemical wastewater (ARP) from effluent produced at the Gabriel Passos Refinery (Petrobrás...

Ozone treatment of textile wastewater relevant to toxic effect elimination in marine environment OceanDocs
Guendy, H.R..
Ozone is a powerful oxidizing agent. The reaction of ozone with organic compounds in aqueous media has achieved a variety of treatment goals. The advantage of ozonation over the other oxidants is that the degradable products of ozonation are generally non-toxic, its final products are CO2 and H2O, and also the residual O3 in the system changes in few minutes to O2 .Convential treatment of textile wastewater includes various combinations of biological (activated sludge), physical and chemical processes. The dyestuffs existed in these wastewater are highly structured organic molecules which are hardly break down biologically. Decolorization of two types of dyes, Direct Pink 3B and Reactive Violet SH- 2R, by ozonation in aqueous medium was studied in presence...

Quantifying the potential of microalgae to remove nutrients from wastewater ArchiMer
Martinez, Carlos; Mairet, Francis; Plaza, Luis; Sciandra, Antoine; Bernard, Olivier.
The main resources limiting microalgae growth are typically phosphorus, nitrogen, and light. Based on the theory of the light limited chemostat, the variable cell quota approach, and photoacclimation models, we build a mathematical model for describing microalgae growth under limitation by these resources. The model is calibrated with a data set from the literature. Then, by numerical simulations, we find that under constant operation of the culture and constant environmental conditions (illumination, temperature, pH, etc.), solutions of the model approach towards either a positive or an extinction steady state. Based on the positive steady state, and in the context of wastewater treatment, we evaluate the capacity of microalgae to remove contaminants. We...
