HEALTH, BINGE DRINKING, AND LABOR MARKET SUCCESS: A LONGITUDINAL STUDY ON YOUNG PEOPLE AgEcon
Keng, Shao-Hsun; Huffman, Wallace E..
Health, like schooling, is a form of human capital and can be expected to be positively related to labor productivity and labor supply. The production of good health and labor productivity, however, sometimes competes with an individual's lifestyle, e.g., binge drinking. In this study, an individual's health has three dimensions: current health status, binge drinking which is an unhealthy lifestyle, and stature or mature height which is a young adult's health endowment. This study presents and fits a dynamic model of an individual's demand for health, demand for binge drinking, labor supply, and wage or demand for labor equations to NLSY 1979 cohort panel data of young people. We find that binge drinking has a negative but insignificant effect on the...

Methodological Agreement between Body-Composition Methods in Young Soccer Players Stratified by Zinc Plasma Levels International Journal of Morphology
de Oliveira-Junior,Astrogildo Vianna; Casimiro-Lopes,Gustavo; Donangelo,Carmem Marino; Koury,Josely Correa; Farinatti,Paulo de Tarso Veras; Massuça,Luís; Fragoso,Isabel.
It is feasible to think that the body composition assessment may be influenced by maturational and zinc status, especially in young athletes, which perform regularly high volume of physical training. In accordance, it seems important to clarify the impact of these factors in body composition assessment in athletes, since errors may lead to mistakes in training prescription and diet elaboration, and therefore affect the athletic performance. The objective was to compare (1) different methods of body composition evaluation in young soccer players stratified by zinc plasma levels; and (2) the two reference methods using skinfolds thickness in children (Slaughter's and Lohman's equations), considering the maturation level. In this cross-sectional study, fifty...

Multicomponent training with different frequencies on body composition and physical fitness in obese children Anais da ABC (AABC)
ALVES,ANA SOFIA R.; VENÂNCIO,TELMA L.; HONÓRIO,SAMUEL ALEXANDRE A.; MARTINS,JÚLIO MANUEL C..
Abstract: Introduction: The aim of the study was to compare the effects of ten-week multicomponent training with different exercise frequencies on body composition (BC) and physical fitness (PF) in overweight and obese young children. Methods: 40 children, aged 12-15 (14.77±1.49), were randomly selected and assigned to experimental groups to train three times/week (EG1) or two times/week (EG2) for 10 weeks and a CG group (no training program). Results: It was shown that experimental groups (EG1 and EG2) improved similarly aerobic capacity (3.8% and 3.5%, respectively), muscular strength (29.7% and 25.2%), flexibility (6.1% and 9.9%), body mass index (5.0% and 4.6%), and body fat (6.4% and 5.6%) from pre- to post-training. CG group showed no significant...

Preservation of cytotoxic granule production in response to mycobacterial antigens by T-lymphocytes from vertically HIV-infected Brazilian youth on effective combined antiretroviral therapy BJID
Arrym,Mauro Pedromonico; Alves,Paulo César Martins; Castelhano,Mariana Virginello; Mazzola,Taís Nitsch; Lemos,Renata Muller Banzato Pinto de; Zaccariotto,Tânia Regina; Levy,Carlos Emilio; Guimarães,Fernando; Silva,Marcos Tadeu Nolasco da.
ABSTRACT Background: HIV infection harms adaptive cellular immunity mechanisms. Long-term virological control by combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) reduces the risk of mycobacterial infections. Thus, we aimed to study cellular responses to mycobacterial antigens in 20 HIV-infected adolescents with at least one year of virological control (HIV-RNA <40 copies/mL) and 20 healthy adolescents. Methods: We evaluated CD8 and γδ T-cell degranulation by measurement of CD107a membrane expression after stimulation with lysates from BCG (10 µg/mL) and H37RA Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb, 10 µg/mL). Immune activation and antigen-presenting ability were also assessed by determination of HLA-DR, CD80, and CD86 markers. Results: TCR γδ T-cell CD107a expression...

Rediscovering Rites of Passage: Education, Transformation, and the Transition to Sustainability Ecology and Society
Lertzman, David Adam; University of Calgary; lertzman@ucalgary.ca.
This paper focuses on rites of passage as a model for wilderness programs. It draws on my experience in the field, particularly with Native youth in a community-based program called "Rediscovery." The Rediscovery program is discussed, along with concepts of traditional indigenous knowledge and education. Foundational concepts of rites of passage are described in terms of their relevance to youth, outdoor education, and the Rediscovery program in particular. Using Rediscovery as a model, rites of passage are put forward as an educational process for youth from various cultural backgrounds. In this context, the purpose of education is to cultivate self-knowledge and to foster core personal development: the making of whole human beings. The paper closes with...

The effect of childhood obesity on social welfare AgEcon
Szucs, Robert Sandor; Csapo, Zsolt.
The young generation is the most influenced and vulnerable segment of the market. Food with high level of fat, sugar and/or salt are popularised for this segment. At the same time nearly 7 people die of obesity or from complications of obesity in Hungary each hour - one every 9 minutes. Approximately 119 million Americans, or 64.5 percent, of adult Americans are either overweight or obese. 17.5 million obese young persons live in the European Union. The result is the drastic elevation of the hygienic expenses. The average health care cost of overweight persons is higher by 42% than normal bodyweight ones. Per capita spending on fast foods is unbelievable and rising. The value of average spending was 2.5 € in 2002. Fast food sales continue to boom despite...

Una medición del impacto del Programa de Capacitación Laboral Juvenil PROJoven AgEcon
Nopo, Hugo; Robles, Miguel; Saavedra, Jaime.

Women and Children First: the Gendered and Generational Social-ecology of Smaller-scale Fisheries in Newfoundland and Labrador and Northern Norway Ecology and Society
Neis, Barbara; Memorial University of Newfoundland; bneis@mun.ca; Power, Nicole G.; Memorial University of Newfoundland; npower@mun.ca.
The resilience of small-scale fisheries in developed and developing countries has been used to provide lessons to conventional managers regarding ways to transition toward a social-ecological approach to understanding and managing fisheries. We contribute to the understanding of the relationship between management and the resilience of small-scale fisheries in developed countries by looking at these dynamics in the wake of the shock of stock collapse and fisheries closures in two contexts: Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, and northern Norway. We revisit and update previous research on the gendered effects of the collapse and closure of the Newfoundland and Labrador northern cod fishery and the closure of the Norwegian cod fishery in the early 1990s and...
