Biomass transport to and from an upper estuarine area by migration of juvenile Atlantic herring <i>Clupea harengus</i> OMA
Maes, J.; Ollevier, F..
A model describing fish abundance resulting from fish migration and mortality in an upper estuary is presented. This model can be used to estimate biomass transports by fish migrations between estuary and sea and to assess production assimilated in the estuary. It was applied to herring <i>Clupea harengus</i> L., a marine species with 0+ juveniles that migrate during winter to temperate European estuaries. It was shown that different mortality regimes greatly affected the number of fish that eventually emigrated and, hence, the biomass that was exported during the seaward migration. The difference between imported and exported biomass was assessed under different growth conditions and varied from positive to negative as mortality rates...

Concentration and microbiological utilization of small organic molecules in the Scheldt estuary, the Belgian coastal zone of the North Sea and the English Channel OMA
Billen, G.; Joiris, C.R.; Wijnant, J.; Gillain, G..
Concentrations and utilization rates of alanine, aspartate, lysine, glucose, glycollic, acetic and lactic acids have been determined on 6 occasions at least, during a full seasonal cycle in the water column of 3 stations (Scheldt estuary, coastal North Sea and English Channel) with greatly differing biological characteristics. No significant differences in substrate concentration could be detected between the 3 stations, although the rate of utilization of all substrates differed greatly, decreasing in the order estuarine > coastal > open sea environment. This apparent paradox is explained by aid of a simple model showing that the steady state concentration of a particular substrate is independent of its rate of production (and thus of consumption)...

Heavy metal contamination in sediments from the Belgian coast and Scheldt estuary OMA
Araújo, M.F.D.; Bernard, P.C.; Van Grieken, R.E..
Sixty-two samples of total sediments and the separated clay/silt fractions were analysed by the energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry to evaluate the pollution level and the trends in samples collected along the Belgian coast over a period of 6 yr and at four stations located in the Scheldt estuary where two of these were sampled periodically for 4 yr. Three correction methods for grain size effects were applied, either to the bulk sediment samples or to the clay/silt size fractions, and the results were compared. Local variations on the concentrations in some of the elements determined were used to establish whether they result from an anthropogenic or natural origin. The level of pollution was assessed as a function of the location, sampling...

Influence of temperature and river discharge on water quality of the Western Scheldt estuary OMA
Somville, M.; De Pauw, N..
Dissolved oxygen concentrations and information on the nitrification process collected respectively during a 14- and a 5-year period in the self-purifying part of the Western Scheldt estuary have been studied. In the polluted part of the stream, ammonium concentrations over the period 1967-1977 have been considered as well. This paper demonstrates the high variability of these three parameters (oxygen, start of the nitrification process, ammonium) owing to the hydrological conditions: temperature and river discharge. Neither the levels of ammonium in the polluted upper part of the stream, nor the concentrations of nitrate and dissolved oxygen in the recuperation part of the Scheldt estuary have been changed significantly during the periods studied...

Measurement of the adenylate energy charge in <i>Nereis diversicolor</i> and <i>Nephtys</i> sp. (Polychaeta: Annelida): evaluation of the usefulness of AEC in pollution monitoring OMA
Verschraegen, K.; Herman, P.M.J.; Van Gansbeke, D.; Braeckman, A..
ATP-content and adenylate energy charge (AEC) ratios were determined in two polychaete species (<i>Nereis diversicolor</i> and <i>Nephtys</i> sp.), sampled in ten stations along the heavily polluted Western Scheldt estuary (N. Belgium, S. Holland). The samples were taken between 27 December 1982 and 6 January 1983. <i>Nereis diversicolor</i> was also sampled in an unpolluted brackish water pond, and subjected to artificial stress by drying the organisms on filter paper. Adenine nucleotide levels were determined using the firefly bioluminescence reaction. The light emission was measured with the integration mode. As the "Constant Light Signal" reagent used contained APM and probably ADP itself, both myokinase and...

Natuurherstelplan Zeeschelde: drie mogelijke inrichtingsvarianten OMA
Van den Bergh, E.; Meire, P.; Hoffmann, M.; Ysebaert, T.J..
The Schelde estuary, with its tidal flats and marshes along an uninterrupted salinity gradient from a marine to a fresh water system, is almost unique in Europe. On top of its important contributions towards national and international biodiversity it performs multiple socio-economic functions of vital importance. To combine all these functions in a sustainable way an integrated management is needed, based on the comprehension of its functioning and aimed at an optimal tuning of all processes and functions involved. With this report we hope to initiate a productive dialogue, one step ahead towards the integrated management of the Schelde estuary. It forms part of an agreement between the Administration of Waterways and Water infrastructure and some Flemish...

Spring phytoplankton assemblages in and around the maximum turbidity zone of the estuaries of the Elbe (Germany), the Schelde (Belgium/The Netherlands) and the Gironde (France) OMA
Muylaert, K.; Sabbe, K..
In spring 1993 phytoplankton samples were taken along the longitudinal salinity gradient of the estuaries of the Elbe, Schelde and Gironde. A minimum in phytoplankton abundance, biomass and diversity was observed in the inner to upper reaches of all estuaries, suggesting massive mortality in these zones. Due to a combination of high turbidity and high river runoff, phytoplankton of the Gironde estuary differed in species composition and had lower cell abundancies and biomass compared with Elbe and Schelde. Phytoplankton structure and biomass of the polyhaline reaches of the Elbe and Schelde were quite comparable. They were characterized by the diatoms <i>Skeletonema costatum</i> and several <i>Thalassiosira</i> spp. and most...

Structural characteristics of phytoplankton assemblages in tidal and non-tidal freshwater systems: a case study from the Schelde basin, Belgium OMA
Muylaert, K.; Van Kerckvoorde, A.; Vyverman, W.; Sabbe, K..
<ol><li>The Schelde estuary, its side basins and their tributaries were sampled in August 1995 and April 1996 for phytoplankton abundance, biomass and species composition. In order to clarify the underlying causes of differences in phytoplanton communities, the results were related to some important abiotic variables.<li>Although species richness and diversity did not differ significantly between the riverine and the freshwater tidal stations, multivariate ordination techniques based on species abundances differentiate between these two ecosystems. While in the rivers phytoplankton standing stocks were as high in summer as in spring, standing stocks in the freshwater tidal estuary were significantly higher in the August...

The diatom genus <i>Thalassiosira</i> (Bacillariophyta) in the estuaries of the Schelde (Belgium-The Netherlands) and the Elbe (Germany) OMA
Muylaert, K.; Sabbe, K..
A taxonomic and ecological study of the phytoplankton of the estuaries of the Schelde (Belgium-The Netherlands) and the Elbe (Germany) revealed the presence of numerous species belonging to the diatom genus <i>Thalassiosira</i>. Its representatives were a dominant component of the phytoplankton spring bloom in these estuaries. A total of 13 species were identified. All of these were present in the Schelde, while only ten were found in the Elbe. Seven and five species respectively had previously not been reported from the Schelde and Elbe. A detailed light and electron microscopical description of these species is given. Most species had their distributional optimum in the polyhaline reaches of the estuaries. Community structure in these...

The estuary as a habitat: an analysis of data on the soft-bottom macrofauna of the estuarine area of the Rivers Rhine, Meuse, and Scheldt OMA
Wolff, W.J..
During the years 1968-1970 a study has been made of the soft-bottom macrofauna (Coelenterata, Mollusca, Echiuroidea, Polychaeta, Archiannelida, Crustacea Malacostraca) of the estuaries of the rivers Rhine, Meuse, and Scheldt in the southwestern part of The Netherlands and of the adjacent part of the North Sea. 1751 samples were taken with 0.1 and 0.2 m² Van Veen grabs; in the intertidal zone several hundreds of samples were dug out, whereas further samples were taken for the analysis of interstitial polychaetes and archiannelids. Of the environmental factors especially salinity, sediment composition, current velocity, water temperature, oxygen saturation, turbidity, water pollution, exposure to waves, and the influence of ice have been investigated....

The geometric features, shape factors and fractal dimensions of suspended particulate matter in the Scheldt Estuary (Belgium) OMA
Billiones, R.G.; Tackx, M.L.; Daro, M.H..
Water samples from the Scheldt estuary were collected in three fractions: (a) unfiltered water, (b) water filtered through a 50 µm net and (c) water filtered through a 300 µm net. Particles easily recognisable from the majority of the amorphous particles were isolated and their geometric dimensions measured. From the measurements, shapefactors were calculated. Measurement of fractal dimensions was attempted. From the first fraction, the particles isolated and measured were circular and chained diatoms. In the second fraction, zooplankters were easily distinguishable and representatives of the three dominant groups (cladocerans, cyclopoids and calanoids) were measured. In the third fraction, detrital pieces from monocotyledon and dicotyledon plants were...

The subtidal macrobenthos in the mesohaline part of the Schelde Estuary (Belgium): influenced by man? OMA
Ysebaert, T.J.; De Neve, L.; Meire, P..
The macrobenthos of the subtidal, mesohaline zone of the Schelde Estuary (Belgium) was sampled in October 1996 and 1997 at 54 and 73 sampling locations respectively. Sediments ranged fr om silty to very coarse, with the dominant sediment type being silt (33% of all locations). Of the 35 macrobenthic species observed, only seven species occurred in more than 20% of the samples. The polychaete <i>Heteromastus filiformis</i> and Oligochaeta were most common. Multivariate techniques revealed three distinct communities, linked mainly with sedimentological factors: (1) a species-poor (nine species) community with a dominance of the amphipod <i>Bathyporeia pilosa</i>, a low mean abundance and biomass (86 ind/m², 0.0189 g ash-free dry...

The Tertiary and Quaternary subbottom of the Schelde estuary near Antwerpen (Belgium) OMA
Wartel, S..
The subbottom stratigraphy of the Schelde estuary near Antwerpen was studied using an ORE subbottom profiler. The estuary valley is incised in Tertiary and Quaternary deposits, still eroded at several places. In the Boom Clay (Oligocene) uparching and diapers occur. They result from an unloading erosion surface, dipping roughly NNE and covered unconformably by Miocene (Edegem Sands) and Pliocene (Kattendijk Sands) deposits. The contact between Miocene and Pliocene has not been observed. The lowermost Quaternary deposit consists of a gravel and shell layer irregular in thickness and unconformable with the older deposits. The recent sediment cover, where present, is less than 1 m thick.
