In mangrove ecosystems, strong reciprocal interactions exist between plant and substrate. Under semi-arid climate, Rhizophora spp. are usually predominant, colonizing the seashore, and Avicennia marina develops at the edge of salt-flats, which is the highest zone in the intertidal range. Along this zonation, distribution and speciation of C, Fe, S, N, and P in sediments and pore-waters were investigated. From the land-side to the sea-side of the mangrove, sediments were characterized by I/ increase in: (i) water content; (ii) TOC; (iii) mangrove-derived OM; II/ and decrease in: (i) salinity; (ii) redox; (iii) pH; (iv) solid Fe and solid P. Beneath Avicennia and Rhizophora, TS accumulated at depth, probably as a result of reduction of iron oxides and... |

Decapod crustaceans from rocky shore at Farol Isle, Matinhos, Paraná, Brazil. II. Spatial distribution of population densities. A study of the spatial distribution of the decapod populations from a rocky shore at Farol Isle, Matinhos, State of Paraná, Brazil (25º51'S, 48º32'W) was canied out. In the supralittoral the rocky surface is covered partially by a layer of litter coming from the terrestrial habitats; in the midlittoral boulders and pebbles cover the rocky basin and in the infralittoral, there is a belt of seaweeds. A total of 8 samples were taken by hand, two from each of the following levels: supralittoral (emersion time 8-12 hours), upper midlittoral (4-8), lower midlittoral (0-4) and limit between midlittoral and infralittoral, monthly, from... |

Hydroid distribution patterns along a horizontal ecocline in the Rio Formoso/Rio Ariquindá/Rio Porto Alegre system, a small and seasonally poikilohaline estuary on the tropical northeast coast of Brazil, were investigated. Collecting was undertaken during the dry season, in November 1993, by diving (with and without SCUBA). Nine stations were sampled on a transect extending from a reef outside the river mouth to a mangrove system at the upper end of the estuary. Four major regions were distinguished along the ecocline based on numerical analyses of hydroid species/station location data: (1) nearshore reef — a sandstone ledge outside the entrance of the estuary; (2) river mouth — a sandy and shelly flood-tidal delta area inside the entrance of the Rio... |

Benthic macroinfauna of six beaches near to Guaratuba Bay, Paraná, Brazil were studied in summer and winter of 1994. Sampling stations were distributed along a transect, from upper of the drift line to depths of nearly 3 m behind the first break of the surf zone. Biological and sedimentological samples, slope, wave height and period were recorded. Subtidal samples were collected by scuba diving. The beaches varied from extremely inclined, composed of coarse sediments, to low inclined, composed of fine and very fine sands. The polychaete Scolelepis squamata, was the numerically dominant species in those beaches composed by fine to very fine sand in the subaereal profile. The echinoderm Mellita quinquiesperforata occurred in the last stations of the surf... |

Coral reef fishes often exhibit a high degree of structure in their distribution and abundance, but the factors that influence their spatial arrangement are poorly understood. This study sought to explain the spatial structure of coral reef fish communities in the Ryukyu Archipelago. southern Japan. Visual surveys of coral reef fishes were conducted at multiple stations across the fringing reef (from the inner reef flat to the outer slope) at each of three different islands; Aka, Ishigaki and Sesoko. Spatial variation in fish communities (within and among reefs) was then compared to changes in environmental variables (water depth, distance from the shoreline, reef zone, coral abundance and coral richness). Despite being small islands, the total species... |

The systematic conservation approach is now commonly used for the design of efficient marine protected area (MPA) networks. Identifying these priority areas often involves using specific conservation-planning software. Several of these software programmes have been developed in recent years, each of which differs in the underlying algorithms used. Here, we investigate whether the choice of software influences the location of priority areas by comparing outputs from Marxan and Zonation, two widely used conservation-planning, decision-support tools. Using biological and socio-economic data from the eastern English Channel, we compared their outputs and showed that the two software packages identified similar sets of priority areas, even though the relatively... |
