| This paper describes the methods used and presents an analysis of the results obtained from three years of study, to determine the separate and inter-related effects of various agents such as gravity, wind and insects, in the pollination of flowers of Coffea arabica L. Observations were made and data obtained from several thousands of normal and castrated flowers that were maintained under natural and controlled conditions. It has been found that the importance of gravity, wind, and insects in pollination of the flowers may vary appreciably in relation to local environmental influences. | At the seventh International Zoological Congres at Boston, HUBRECHT (1907) delivered an address “On the foetal membranes of the Vertebrates”. In this lecture he expounded his revolutionary ideas about the origin of the foetal membranes and the phylogenetic history of the vertebrates in general. HUBRECHT was of the opinion that in the ancestors of the Mammalia there was only one embryonic membrane, and that has been retained as the the trophoblast. Its original function was to protect the larva, but when, in the early mammals, intra-uterine development was established, this membrane assumed the function of feeding the embryo as we see in our present day mammals. | This paper describes the statistical analysis of a varietal trial with two unusual characteristics : (i) The plant (coffee) is one of those which show strong maxima and minima of production in alternate years. This phenomenon must be prevented from masking or biasing the other varietal comparisons in which we are interested. (ii) The design of the experiment is systematic. | O conhecimento das caraterísticas químicas dos solos tropicais e subtropicais assume, dia a dia, maior importância, à medida que se desenvolve a nossa agricultura. No presente trabalho foram examinadas amostras representativas de quatro dos principais tipos de solo do Estado de São Paulo, a saber : Massapé-salmourão, Glacial, Terra-roxa legítima e Arenito Bauru. Procurou-se determinar se os elementos potássio, cálcio e magnésio se acham na forma "trocável" e "não trocável", e em que proporções. Primeiramente são apresentadas as propriedades físico-químicas e mecânicas das amostras dos solos, a fim de melhor caraterizá-las. | Hoewel ik in het voorjaar van 1948 slechts korte tijd op Curaçao en Bonaire verbleef, deed ik hier naast waarnemingen, die een bevestiging zijn van die van RUTTEN (1931), ook een aantal aanvullende observaties. Ik wil deze gaarne publiceren in de feestbundel ter ere van Prof. Dr. J. E. W. IHLE en Prof. Dr. L. F. DE BEAUFORT, met wie ik gedurende vele jaren op verschillend gebied zo aangenaam samengewerkt heb. Over de vogels der Benedenwindse Eilanden is nog slechts weinig geschreven. | De hier besproken soorten zijn alle nieuw voor de Nederlandse fauna in zoverre, dat zij niet vermeld staan in de Catalogus Aranearum van VAN HASSELT. De collectie van deze araneoloog bevindt zich in het Rijksmuseum voor Natuurlijke Historie te Leiden en wordt daar momenteel gerevideerd, waarna een nieuwe naamlijst van Nederlandse spinnen zal worden samengesteld. In deze bijdrage wordt geen poging gedaan de twijfelachtige synoniemie van de Catalogus op te helderen, hetgeen zeker nog menige nieuwe soort voor ons land zal opleveren. | Bindweefsel is de naam van een familie van weefsels, welker gemeenschappelijke afkomst ligt in het mesenchym en welke tezamen gekarakteriseerd zijn door het bezit van meer of minder rijkelijke tussenstof tussen de cellen. Uit didactische overweging zijn we wel gewend de bindweefsels te onderscheiden in enerzijds zulke, welker functie in hoofdzaak bepaald wordt door de tussenstof, anderzijds zulks waarin de cellen de functiedraagsters zijn ¹). Als regel wordt dan vermeld, dat de eerstgenoemde groep (vezelbindweefsel, kraakbeen, been) in het organisme een mechanische taak vervult, terwijl de laatstgenoemde (reticulair bindweefsel, vetweefsel, bloed, weefsels, waarvoor de naam bindweefsel dus eigenlijk niet geldt) aandeel heeft in de stofwisseling.
