CATTLE FEEDER BEHAVIOR AND FEEDER CATTLE PLACEMENTS AgEcon
Kastens, Terry L.; Schroeder, Ted C..
Cattle feeders appear irrational when they place cattle on feed when projected profit is negative. Long futures positions appear to offer superior returns to cattle feeding investment. Cattle feeder behavior suggests that they believe a downward bias in live cattle futures persists and that cattle feeders use different expectations than the live cattle futures market price when making placement decisions. This study examines feeder cattle placement determinants, comparing performance of...

Value of Single Source and Backgrounded Cattle as Measured by Health and Feedlot Profitability AgEcon
Abidoye, Babatunde O.; Lawrence, John D..
Commingling cattle in the feedlot increases the odds of cattle getting sick. However, backgrounded cattle are less susceptible to diseases which allow the generalizing statements like "backgrounding is just like single source". Using data from over 15,000 cattle fed in 12 Iowa feedlots, we show that although backgrounded cattle do better than preconditioned cattle commingled in the feedlot, they have poorer carcass quality, health, and performance than single source cattle. Backgrounded

IDENTIFYING ECONOMIC RISK IN CATTLE FEEDING AgEcon
Mark, Darrell R.; Schroeder, Ted C.; Jones, Rodney D..
Closeout data from two western Kansas commercial feedlots are examined to determine how cattle prices, feed costs, and animal performance impact the variability of cattle feeding profits. The relative impacts of these factors are studied across sex, placement weight, and placement month using standardized beta coefficients. Feeder cattle prices have a greater impact on profit variability for spring and fall placements. The effect of animal performance on variability of cattle feeding profits is greater for fall placements. Results suggest that fed cattle and feeder

Optimal Incentive Structure in Cattle Feeding Contracts Under Alternative Fed Cattle Pricing Methods AgEcon
Rahman, Shaikh Mahfuzur.
Developing a multitask principal-agent model, this paper theoretically analyzes the incentive provisions in the existing cattle feeding contracts under alternative fed cattle pricing methods. Comparative statics from the theoretical model are evaluated by simulation experiments. Feedlot and carcass performance of a large set of feeder steers are simulated employing a dynamic and deterministic bio-physical growth model adapted from the animal science literature. The cattle feeder and the owner's stochastic costs and returns under alternative production technologies and market conditions are then calculated by combining

A DECISION SUPPORT AID FOR BEEF CATTLE INVESTMENT USING EXPERT SYSTEMS AgEcon
Falconer, Lawrence L.; Long, Charles R.; McGrann, James M..
The beef cattle investment decision provides an excellent opportunity to increase the economic efficiency of beef cattle production. The investment questions that face beef cattle producers are of interest to beef cattle producers, educators, and financial institutions involved in lending to beef cattle producing firms. This study develops a decision support aid utilizing expert system technology to assist beef cattle producers in making well-founded investment decisions with respect to the firm's beef cattle herd.

FACTORS AFFECTING THE LEVEL OF COMMERCIALIZATION AMONG CATTLE KEEPERS IN THE PASTORAL AREAS OF UGANDA AgEcon
Ruhangawebare, Godfrey Kalemera.
Deliberate efforts have been made by the government of Uganda to commercialize agriculture through market and trade liberalisation. However, marketed livestock offtake has remained low contributing to the existing per capita meat deficit. A survey was conducted by way of personal interviews with 180 respondents in selected central and western pastoral districts of Uganda. The study was initiated with the overall purpose of assessing the factors that influence cattle keepers‘ participation in commercialization of livestock production in the pastoral communities and to establish the factors affecting cattle keepers‘ decision to sell cattle. PRICE DISCOVERY FOR STOCKER CATTLE FUTURES AND OPTIONS AgEcon
Diersen, Matthew A.; Klein, Nicole L..
Low trading volume in the CME stocker cattle contracts has made hedgers and speculators reluctant to use the contracts. Traders need decision tools to discover prices or to evaluate quoted prices that may not contain all the information in the market. The number of head of stocker weight cattle sold on the spot market has increased in recent years while the practice of cross-hedging stocker weight cattle against the feeder cattle contract remains risky. A model explains the spread between feeder cattle and stocker cattle futures prices as a function of...

Pass-Through in United States Beef Cattle Prices AgEcon
Zhao, Huan; Du, Xiaodong; Hennessy, David A..
Feeder cattle are fattened to become fed live cattle six months later. The U.S. feeder cattle industry is intensively competitive, so that market efficiency suggests feeder cattle prices should fully reflect feed prices and information on future fed cattle prices. Employing a long time series (1979-2004) of feeder cattle futures, live cattle futures, and local corn prices, we test whether complete pass-through occurs. The results indicate that an increase of a dollar per hundred pounds in the live

Genetic uniqueness and socio-cultural conservation values of the endangered Yakutian Cattle Organic Eprints
Kantanen, J.; Granberg, L.; Kopoteva, I.; Partanen, U.; Pääkkönen, E.; Soini, K..
At the local level the values of the cattle were more related to everyday livelihood strategies of single households and families, whereas the representatives of the republic, in line with the newspapers, highlighted the importance of the cattle for Sakha's food production and for national identity. Thus, individuals at different levels were in favour of conserving the cattle, but for different reasons. The local residents and experts were more concerned about developing economically sustainable cattle production, whereas the experts in Yakutsk were concerned about the conservation of genetic resources. The genetic studies...

Impact of Beef Quality on Market Signals Transmitted by Grid Pricing AgEcon
Johnson, Heather C.; Ward, Clement E..
Value-based marketing is shaping cattle production; however, market signals differ dramatically depending on carcass quality. This study applies a two-stage coefficients of separate determination procedure to four regional fed cattle datasets sorted by grid value and by carcass quality attributes. Weight is the strongest signal sent when higher valued cattle and better quality cattle are sold on a grid. Quality characteristics send stronger signals when lower valued cattle and poorer quality cattle are sold on a grid. Producers of lower quality

Dynamic Assessment of Bertrand Oligopsony in the U.S. Cattle Procurement Market AgEcon
Ji, In Bae; Chung, Chanjin.
The new empirical industrial organization approach with the Bertrand model is employed to measure the oligopsony market power in the U.S. cattle procurement market. The assumption of price competition (Bertrand model) based on the nature of cattle production such as cattle cycle and seasonality is used and compared to quantity competition (Cournot model). The empirical results show that the oligopsony market power exists in the U.S. cattle procurement market. The cattle cycle and seasonality affect the oligopsony market power and the cattle cycle causes...

Trade-Related Policy and Canadian-U.S. Fed Cattle Transactions Basis AgEcon
Schulz, Lee L.; Schroeder, Ted C.; Ward, Clement E..
Price differences among fed cattle prices in Canada and the United States (referred to here as fed cattle basis) are important for Canadian cattle feeders, but changing government regulations in Canada and the United States have made basis more variable. This article uses transaction data from Canadian feedlots to quantify fed cattle price differentials in light of new policy initiatives. Using transaction prices, we find that differing slaughter regulations, labeling laws, and policies affecting access to U.S. markets for Canadian cattle affect fed cattle...

Attributes Preferred and Premiums Offered for Naturally Produced Beef Cattle AgEcon
Springer, Job D.; Biermacher, Jon T.; Childs, M. Dan; Alkire, Deke O.; Grooms, Brandon.
A growing number of beef cattle producers in the US are using limited information to determine whether or not it would be economical for them to grow naturally produced cattle. The objective was to discover the attributes that marketing companies prefer for the naturally produced cattle they purchase, and to elicit the price premiums being offered for cattle that possess these attributes. Results of a phone survey of companies that purchase natural cattle show that 27 out of 32 companies report their willingness to pay a premium of $5.95/cwt for cattle...

SIMULATED IMPACT OF A REGIONAL SHIFT IN FED CATTLE PRODUCTION ON THE LOCATION OF FED CATTLE SLAUGHTER AgEcon
Faminow, Merle D.; Sarhan, M.E..
During the past decade fed cattle slaughter has relocated to states situated in the southwest plains. Concern has developed that the economic depletion of groundwater used for irrigating feeding activity could result in reduced levels of cattle feeding in that region. A reduction in cattle feeding activity could result in slaughtering plant closures and a relocation in slaughter activity to other regions. A mixed integer programming model was developed to simulate the possible effect of a declining cattle feeding industry in the southwest plains on the location of the fed cattle...

Concentration in Beef Packing and Slaughter Cattle Pricing AgEcon
Love, H. Alan; Capps, Oral, Jr.; Williams, Gary W..
We empirically investigate the effects of beef packer concentration and size efficiencies, packer procurement and pricing methods, and other market variables and quality characteristics on the prices paid by packers for slaughter cattle. We find that packers pay less for fed cattle in more concentrated regions. However, we find that concentration is only one of numerous market factors determining fed cattle prices and less important than many. Quality variables controlled by sellers, like cattle type, are more important in determining the price paid by packers than packer concentration, size economies, procurement methods,...
