Fernández,Heriberto; Hitschfeld,Marianne.
The prevalence of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli and their biotypes in beef and dairy cattle from the South of Chile was established. Campylobacter were statistically more prevalent among beef cattle (35.9%) than among dairy cattle (21.3%), being C. jejuni the species most frequently isolated.

Genomic breeding programs - a large step forward for low-input dairy cattle breeding? Organic Eprints
Simianer, H.; Bieber, A..
This technical note gives an overview of the history of dairy cattle breeding, introduces the basic concept and outlines the consequences of genomic breeding strategies especially with regard to functional traits. First results of the LowInputBreeds project in the area of dairy cattle breeding are presented, and limitations and ethical implementations are discussed. Finally, recommendations are given how farmers, especially in the low input sector, should implement the new approach.

Comparison of traditional and genomic breeding programs for organic and low input dairy cattle accounting for traits relevant in different macro-climatic zones Organic Eprints
Frevert, H.; Yin, T.; Simianer, H.; König, S..
In the past decade, successful selection on production traits for dairy cattle has greatly increased milk production. Recently, selection indices for female fertility were gradually and increasingly introduced into the overall breeding goals for dairy cattle (Miglior et al., 2005). As a by-product of fermention in ruminants, enteric methane emissions (ME) should also be controlled and mitigated due to their contribution to global warming (Forster et al., 2007) and as a cause for inefficient use of dietary energy. Moderate heritabilities ranging between 0.30 and 0.35 for predicted and real measurements of ME were reported...

Resigning protein concentrates in dairy cattle nutrition: a problemor a chance? Organic Eprints
Leiber, Florian.
This paper is aiming to discuss significant aspects of dairy cows’ demand for dietary protein and to put these in a general context of rumen fermentation efficiency. The question is, whether new perspectives on optimal rumen functioning could be found which allow to develop reasonable low-input feed evaluation systems for dairy cattle. Besides the reduction in concentrated feedstuff these systems should enable to avoid nutrition based metabolic disorders of the cattle and to indicate advantageous side-effects coming along with low-concentrate feeding. A rough outline of research and development topics to achieve such systems shall be presented with this paper.

Opportunities and challenges for integrating dairy cattle into farms with certified organic pineapple production as perceived by smallholder farmers in Central Uganda Organic Eprints
Nalubwama, Sylvia; Kabi, Fred; Vaarst, Mette; Kiggundu, Muhammad; Smolders, Gidi.
A study was conducted in 2013 to assess opportunities and challenges of integrating dairy cattle into organic pineapple production in Uganda. Thirty organic pineapple farmers were interviewed using a semistructured questionnaire. The main dairy cattle management systems were tethering (73%) and zero grazing (27%). Average landholding was 1.74 ± 1.06 and 3.75 ± 2.70 ha for zero grazing and tethering systems, respectively. All farms were diversified with various livestock such as cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, and chickens and crops including pineapples, maize, coffee, bananas, beans, sweet potatoes, and cassava. The level of...

Prediction of free-stall occupancy rate in dairycattle barns through fuzzy sets REA
Campos,Alessandro T.; Castro,Jaqueline de O.; Schiassi,Leonardo; Yanagi Junior,Tadayuki; Pires,Maria de Fátima Á.; Mattioli,Cristiano C..
The goal of this study was to develop a fuzzy model to predict the occupancy rate of free-stalls facilities of dairy cattle, aiding to optimize the design of projects. The following input variables were defined for the development of the fuzzy system: dry bulb temperature (Tdb, °C), wet bulb temperature (Twb, °C) and black globe temperature (Tbg, °C). Based on the input variables, the fuzzy system predicts the occupancy rate (OR, %) of dairy cattle in free-stall barns. For the model validation, data collecting were conducted on the facilities of the Intensive System of Milk Production (SIPL), in the

Large scale screening of the Danish dairy cattle population for their milk fatty acid profile Organic Eprints
Holmquist, Dino Demirovic; Buitenhuis, Albert Johannes; Nielsen, Niels Henning; Poulsen, Nina Aagaard; Munk, Arne; Kargo, Morten.
The aim was to quantify the factors influencing the detailed milk fatty acid profile. The results of large scale screening of the Danish dairy cattle population for a detailed milk fat composition revealed profound effects of breed, production system, parity, lactation stage and genetics. This opens up the possibility to differentiate the milk at farm level, by management and breeding strategies.
