Sheep housing in Trás-os-Montes. Contribution to design buildings and equipment appropriate for local sheep farms IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Barbosa, José Carlos.
Sheep farming has a great importance in the region of Trás-os-Montes, one of the most depopulated and least favoured Portuguese areas. We have studied the buildings for sheep housing, in this region, aiming to identify the aspects that may be considered as constraints or problems that can hinder the development of sheep farming in the region. Thus, we selected several villages where we have interviewed sheep raisers, aiming to get to know the sheep farming system and the sheep housing or facilities utilisation; and where we have collected data concerning...

Impact on Western Australia’s sheep supply chain of the termination of live sheep exports AgEcon
Nath, Tanmoy; Kingwell, Ross S.; Cunningham, Peter; Islam, Nazrul; Xayavong, Vilaphonh; Curtis, Kimbal; Feldman, David; Anderton, Lucy; Mahindua, Truphena.
Western Australia (WA) supplies around three-quarters of Australia’s exports of live sheep. The number of sheep exported live from WA has ranged from 4.5 million to 2.4 million with the trend in numbers exported being downwards. The future of this export trade appears to be increasingly vulnerable and uncertain, primarily because of the influence of animal welfare lobbyists. This paper uses scenario analysis to assess the impact on WA’s sheep supply chain of the termination of the live sheep export trade. The supply chain comprises three subsectors: farm production, processing/wholesale and retailing/export. The impacts of...

Productivity and Breeding Strategies of Sheep in Indonesia: A Review JARTS
Sodiq, Akhmad; Tawfik, Ezzat S..
There are two distinct types of sheep in Indonesia: thin-tailed and fat-tailed, with some strain differentiation within each. The most important sheep breeds of Indonesia are the Javanese Thin Tail (JTT) and Javanese Fat Tail (JFT) sheep of West and East Java, respectively. Included are strains of thin tailed sheep Sumatra Thin Tailed (STT), Semarang, Garut and the Priangan sheep. The government also introduced some temperate sheep breeds (such as: Merino, Suffolk, Dorset, Suffas, Dormer, St.Croix and Barbados Blackbelly

Farm buildings and working conditions in sheep farms: actual situation in Trás-os-Montes, Portugal IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Barbosa, José Carlos; Fitas da Cruz, Vasco.
In the region of Trás-os-Montes, in the Northeast of Portugal, the breeding of sheep is quite relevant, not only because of meat and milk production, but also because breeders are dealing with mountainous areas or regions where agriculture is the main activity and alternative economic activities are very scarce. Sheep are raised in extensive systems according to traditional farming systems and flocks are small. In this region, sheep farms don't use animal housing intensively. Generally, buildings for sheep are simple, supplying shelter and the basic requirements to animals. Also, the utilization of equipment or...

THE ECONOMIC ASPECTS OF INNOVATION IN SHEEP BREEDING AgEcon
Csatari, Gabor Bence.
During my investigations, I highlighted three innovations, all of which serve the production of a final product, sheep kefir. This product contains a unique added value and involves several innovational opportunities. I examined the complex economic analysis of the innovations and technological elements investigated with respect to revenues from the sale of sheep milk, sheep cheese (kashkaval) and sheep kefir. The kashkaval-type sheep cheese does not contain sufficient added value to cover the costs of innovational investments. Investigating the innovational activity for developing

Chronic cardiomyopathy and encephalic spongy changes in sheep experimentally fed Ateleia glazioviana Ciência Rural
Raffi,Margarida Buss; Rech,Raquel Rubia; Sallis,Elisa Simone Viegas; Rodrigues,Aline; Barros,Claudio Severo Lombardo de.
Fifteen mature crossbred sheep were fed different daily amounts (2.5-35g kg-1 bw) of the fresh green leaves of Ateleia glazioviana for different periods of time (1-24 days). One sheep was not fed the plant and served as a control. All 16 sheep were euthanatized at different stages of the experiment, necropsied, and several organs, including heart and brain were evaluated histologically. Samples of five brain regions from three affected sheep were evaluated by electron microscopy. Clinical signs observed in three sheep included depression, anorexia, general weakness, staggering gait and...

Organic sheep husbandry in Germany - how to tap its full potential Organic Eprints
Klumpp, Carolin; Häring, Anna Maria.
Organic sheep production in Germany is characterised by diverse production systems. With the choice of breed, flock size and farming methods, sheep farming is feasible under a variety of conditions. The status-quo of the organic sheep sector was analysed based on German-wide surveys of organic sheep farms. This generated new information on current farm organisations and production processes. Weaknesses were identified in production and marketing of organic lamb and sheep milk. A sustainable development of organic sheep husbandry in Germany is only possible...

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF CONTROLLING LEAFY SPURGE WITH SHEEP AgEcon
Bangsund, Dean A.; Nudell, Daniel J.; Sell, Randall S.; Leistritz, F. Larry.
Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula L.), a widely established exotic, noxious, perennial weed, is a major threat to rangeland and wildland in the Upper Great Plains. Chemical, biological, and cultural control methods have limitations in their applicability and effectiveness in treating leafy spurge. However, many of the constraints prohibiting the use of herbicides, tillage, and biological controls do not apply to sheep grazing. Sheep grazing, while known to be effective in controlling leafy spurge since the 1930s, has lacked widespread adoption as a leafy spurge control. A deterministic, bioeconomic model, incorporating relationships between sheep grazing...

Tropical sheep production systems. Repositório Alice
SOUZA NETO, J. de; FIGUEIREDO, E. A. P..
Sheep were among the first livestock species to be domesticated by man. The domestication occurred as early as 8,000 to 10,000 B.C., probably in the area known today as Iraq and Iran (Mason, 1977). Sheep served an important role in the transformation of man from a hunter to one who managed the resources to his benefit. Sheep are still important to mankind with large numbers of people living mostly on products obtained from sheep. Sheep are adapted to and perform well in a variety of environments throughout the world. Although they are economically less important than wool

The evolution of sheep production in Rio Grande do Sul and Uruguay: a comparative analysis of structural change Ciência Rural
Viana,João Garibaldi Almeida; Waquil,Paulo Dabdab.
This study intended to analyze comparatively the evolution and the structural changes in sheep production in Rio Grande do Sul and Uruguay, being the international wool crisis used as a reference point. The analysis method was based on an econometrics time series, and the analysis began with the estimation of models that used linear and semi logarithmic regression. The estimation of the models proved that there were structural changes in sheep production in these regions, and this estimation used the wool crisis as a point of reference. In Rio Grande do Sul after 1990, the variables of sheep stock, wool and sheep meat...

Anatomical Characteristics of Deer and Sheep Lumbar Spines: Comparison to the Human Lumbar Spine International Journal of Morphology
Wang,Yang; Liu,Ting; Song,Liang-Song; Zhang,Zhi-Xin; Li,You-Qiong; Lu,Lai-Jin.
Deer and sheep spines are often used as models of the human spine. A prerequisite for the use of animal models is information regarding the interspecies differences in the parameters of general interest. This would clarify the limitations of each animal model and substantiate the applicability of the obtained results to humans. Since sufficient data appear to be currently unavailable, we sought to investigate the feasibility of using deer and sheep as animal models for studies on the human spine. The objective of this study was a thorough comparison of the anatomical parameters of deer and sheep spines with those of the human spine. We employed...

Status Quo and barriers of the expansion of organic sheep husbandry in Germany Organic Eprints
Klumpp, Carolin; Häring, Anna Maria.
Conclusions Potential development of sheep husbandry in organic farming in Germany was identified as follows: - Optimisation of existing sheep husbandry in organic farming: The main problems resulting from Council Regulation (EC) No. 2092/91 are appropriate feeding and lamb breeding strategies and health management. To address these weaknesses further research activities are necessary. - Conversion of conventional sheep farms to organic production methods will only become an interesting option when the problems identified are addressed. Only then support measures will actually become an incentive to convert. - Introduction of

Dung beetles (Coleoptera, Scarabaeinae) attracted to sheep dung in exotic pastures Rev. Bras. entomol.
Correa,César Murilo de Albuquerque; Puker,Anderson; Korasaki,Vanesca; Oliveira,Naiara Gimenes de.
Dung beetles (Coleoptera, Scarabaeinae) attracted to sheep dung in exotic pastures. In this study we provide data on the abundance and richness of dung beetles (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae, Scarabaeinae) attracted to sheep dung in exotic pastures (Brachiaria spp.). In four areas of exotic pasture pitfall traps were installed and baited with fresh sheep dung for sampling of dung beetles. A total of 2,290 individuals were captured belonging to 16 species, 10 genera and five tribes of Scarabaeinae beetles. Trichillum externepunctatum Preudhomme de Borre, 1886 and Dichotomius bos (Blanchard, 1843) were dominant. The guild of dwellers was the most abundant in...
