Catalog of marine benthic algae from New Caledonia IRD

A catalog of the marine benthic algae (#Chlorophyta, Phaeophyta$ and #Rhodophyta$) reported from New Caledonia is presented in two sections : 1. Classification; 2. Check list with references and localities. There are 35 genera, 130 species of green algae; 23 genera, 59 species of brown algae; and 79 genera, 147 species of red algae which represent a rich algal flora for the subtropics. (Résumé d'auteur)

The release of organic compounds in marine organisms (unicellular and multicellular algae, lower animals) is discussed as a part of more complex phenomenon - the exchange between organisms (ecological metabolism). From this point both absolute and relative release rates are of interest. Many algae species have been shown to have bactericidal or bacteriostatic substances (Glombitza, I979;Michaneck, 1979; Caccamese et al., 1980; Fenical & Paul, 1984; Niang& Hung, 1984). The antibacterialagents found in the algae include amino acids, terpenoids, phlorotannins, acrylic acid, phenoliccompounds, steroids, halogenated ketones and alkanes, cyclic polysulphides and fatty acids. In a large numberof marine algae antimicrobial activities are attributed to the presence of acrylic acid.

The content of phycobiliprotein, namely R-phycoerytrin and allophycocyanin in some species of red algae from the Black Sea has been investigated. It was shown that the pigment content was different in various species of red algae, and also it depended on year season. The content of R-phycoerytrin in the algae cells is higher than the content of allophycocyanin.

Six of eight species of marine planktonic algae studied have, on the average, a twofold decrease in the relative content of chlorophyll "a" during a light day, and this is probably the result of the algae pigment system response to the solar radiation effect. The content of chlorophyll "a" in D. brightwellii and Ph. tricornutum remains unchanged during the day, which evidences for a high light stability of the pigment apparatus of the given species. At night algae with a low stability of the pigment system do not change the content of chlorophyll "a". The luminescence spectra were studied for single cells of certain sea algae species in the normal state and as affected by the spectrum visible region (436 nm) radiation. The initial luminescence spectra of green, diatomaceous, golden and brown algae are shown to differ insignificantly. Certain differences are found in changes of the spectra during photodestruction of interacellular luminescent compounds under the effect of the radiation exciting the luminescence.
