The nutritional requirements of the Japanese shrimp Penaeus japonicus ArchiMer
Guillaume, Julien.
Penaeus japonicus is probably the best known species among penaeids or even among shrimps. In juveniles, the protein requirement was best studied and Japanese shrimp appears as the most demanding penaeid species. They may be related to several factors such as energy level of the diet, digestibility or biological value of protein or other nutritional factors. The essential amino acids are well known, however from a quantitative point of view the requirements in each of these amino acids remain to be determined.

Turouin-buffiere, M.
The life-span of Niphargus virei is estimated with the length histograms of annual summer samples; it fits in with the data of rare spring distributions and with the growth observed in the laboratory. Increase in body wet weight confirms the low growth rate of this species (maximum: 0.06 mg/day); the mean age of populations changes on account of rainfall, which determines the drift of part of the population out of its natural habitat.

Thorez, A; Compere, P; Goffinet, G.
Ultrastructural observations of various integumental regions of the crab Carcinus maenas show an important biodegradation of the old sclerites during premolt. At the ecdysis, this biodegradation extends from the basis of the membranous layer up the upper third of the principal layer. The first biodegradation features are a disorganization followed by a complete disappearance of the microfibrils. Numerous ecdysial droplets and double membrane bounded microstructures probably take part in biodegradation processes.

Jugan, P; Vanherp, F.
After solubilization of ovocyte-membranes from the crayfish Orconectes limosus , a component with a molecular weight of 30 kDa and capable to fix vitellogenin specifically, could be characterized by SDS-PAGE and by electroblotting. Because this isolated component is sensible to the digestion of proteolytic enzymes such as pronase, it is assumed that it is a protein. A polyclonal antiserum is produced against this component and its tissue-specificity is verified by ELISA.

Leroux, Aurelien.
The presence of two (or at least one) eyestalks is required for inducing a complete, monoecdysial metamorphosis in Palaemonetes varians . This induction is performed, at 20 degree C, in about 20 hours situated on either side of the third larval moult when metamorphosis occurs at the fourth one. The mechanism of induction is discussed.

Compere, P.
The epicuticle of the crab Carcinus maenas consists in three distinct layers: the fibrous surface coat, the cuticulin layer and the inner epicuticle. Short segments of the cuticulin layer are first deposited at the top of dense plaques of the ectodermal cell membrane. Their assembling gives rise to a five-layered continuous structure of about 37 nm thick. Afterwards, the inner epicuticle is added inside close to the cuticulin layer but dense plaques are not concerned with the phenomenon. The deposition of the fibrous surface coat outside to the cuticulin layer takes place only during late postmolt stages (D2-D3). In mineralized cuticles, this typical epicuticle structure persists during all intermolt long.

Truchot, J; Jouve, D.
Oxygen consumption of juvenile prawns, Penaeus japonicus , was measured during the day at 4 temperatures (23, 26, 30 and 33 degree C) and at various oxygenation levels. For inactive prawns burrowed into sand, respiratory metabolism was maintained almost constant in hypoxia above a critical oxygen pressure of about 30-40 Torr. Data analysis according to a hyperbolic model indicates that the capacity for metabolic regulation was optimal between 26 and 30 degree C. Prawns acclimated 1-2 weeks at 20 degree C in moderate hypoxia (P sub(O2) around 50-55 Torr) showed a reinforced regulation of oxygen consumption when compared to normoxic controls.

Goudeau, M; Lachaise, F; Kubisz, P; Goudeau, H.
Electrophysiological measurements and related cytological controls were done on immature and submature oocytes of Homarus gammarus . By chromatography (HPLC) and radio-immunoassays (RIA) it was established that submature oocytes displayed different ecdysteroids. Furthermore, the structure of the stalk (funiculus) for the laid eggs attachment was analyzed. it consisted of the two superimposed vitelline envelopes which were likely modified by the cortical reaction exudate during the fertilization process. In addition, the successive secretory phases, regarding to the embryonic envelopes were evidenced. Finally, the ecdysteroid titers of embryonic stages were measured.

Leroux, A.
The Y organ appears during the embryonic development of the prawn (P. serratus ) at a stage approximately C, according to Richard's definition (1974). 3 weeks separate this stage from hatching at a temperature of 20 degree C. The organ formation is realized over 48 hours and is marked by an histological modification and a small mitotic crisis in the epidermal tissue from which it differentiates. Its metameric localization is mainly maxillular.

A review of the known hosts geographical range and current diagnostic procedures for the virus diseases of cultured penaeid shrimp ArchiMer
Lightner, D; Bell, T; Redman, R.
At least six virus diseases are presently known in cultured penaeid shrimp. Each of these six penaeid virus diseases (BP = Baculovirus penaei ; MBV = Penaeus monodon -type baculovirus (including PBV of Australian penaeids); BMN = baculoviral midgut gland necrosis; HPV = hepatopancreatic parvo-like virus; IHHNV = infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus; and REO = reo-like virus of the hepatopancreas) may be comprised by a multitude of individual strains, some of which are highly pathogenic to some penaeids, while being of little importance to others.

Developpement embryonnaire de Palaemon serratus : Resultats preliminaires ArchiMer
Bellon, H.
The formation of the limbs, the digestive tract, the nervous system, the sensory and hormonal structures begins in this prawn during the embryonic stage C, according to Richard's definition (1974) and is performed at the stage H. The digestive tract differentiates with a caudo-cephalic gradient. The digestive gland is formed at least partially by vitellophages. The C.N.S. appears with a cephalo-caudal gradient and the regions of the eyestalk are quickly differentiated. The organ of Bellonci and the sensory pore appear independently during the stage F. The first neurosecretory cells are detected in the brain during the stage D.

Protein requirements of Penaeid shrimp. ArchiMer
Kanazawa, A.
Proteins are indispensable nutrients for growth and maintenance of live of all animals. The optimum protein levels in diets for shrimps are different among the various species. Squid meal is an effective protein source for many penaeids. The effects of dietary protein, lipid, and carbohydrate levels on the growth and survival of larvae of Penaeus japonicus were examined by feeding trials using purified diet with carrageenan as a binder. As a result, the effects of protein levels on growth and survival of P. japonicus larvae varied with dietary carbohydrate levels but not dietary lipid levels.

Mineral requirement of Penaeids ArchiMer
Piedad-pascual, F.
Marine shrimps absorb minerals from their aquatic environment aside from the minerals that come from the food they eat. Thus, the dietary requirement of shrimps for certain minerals will depend on the amounts and availability of these minerals in the aquatic environment. Dietary sources for growth may be necessary due to losses during moltings.

Ansenne, A; Compere, P; Goffinet, G.
The mineralized tergite cuticle of four terrestrial isopods (Oniscoidea) (Ligia oceanica, Oniscus asellus, Porcellio scaber and Armadillidium vulgare ) and of the marine isopod Sphaeroma serratum shows a general organization comparable to the fundamental plan of the decapod sclerite cuticle. Moreover, as in decapods, the procuticular layers are not tanned and mineralization rates, from 60 to 80% of the total cuticular dry weight, are of the same importance. However, the chitin protein microfibril distribution according to a homogeneous system in the mineralized procuticular proximal layer in all isopod species so far studied does not allow any comparison of this layer with the non-mineralized membranous layer.

Casanova, B; Huguet, D; Secretan, S.
A comparison of the skeleton of a successive thoracic segment in various Malacostraca shows the development and growing complexity of phragmal structure. It first appears in some Mysicacea and in Euphausiacea by means of an interarthrodial lamina issued from sternite. In Decapoda, Penaidae, Atyidae, Processidae, Palaemonidae, this lamina is diversified and some elements from pleural origin join it. The beginning of the so constituted wall considerably increases in Nephropidae and becomes ramified.

Enrichment of live foods. ArchiMer
Watanabe, T.
Live foods such rotifers and Artemia are still indispensable for mass propagation of larval fish. At present, more than 20 fish and crustacean species are mass produced in Japanese governmental fish farming centres and private hatcheries. Fry are either released into the coastal areas or used for commercial cultivation. This culture technology is rapidly developing with new species being introduced each year and larval rearing is increasingly identified as the number one constraint. Artemia is used most extensively, particularly for the mass production of Kuruma prawn, Penaeus japonicus .
