Nitrate leaching and N2-fixation in grasslands of different composition, age and management Organic Eprints

Cut grassland systems usually have high N efficiency and consequently low nitrate leaching, whereas the introduction of grazing animals increases the loss potential dramatically (Jarvis, 2000). It has been demonstrated that nitrate leaching from unfertilised grass-clover swards is lower than from mineral-N fertilized swards grazed by cattle. The possible explanation for this is that the N2 fixation by pasture legumes is regulated by a natural feedback mechanism driven by soil inorganic N levels. The feedback mechanism acts as a limit to N inputs from legumes and consequently regulates the potential for N losses (Ledgard, 2001). Grass cover retained by nose-ringing of outdoor sows only partially reduces the risk of N leaching Organic Eprints

Nose-ringing is an option to maintain grass cover in outdoor pig production systems. However ringing is no guarantee for a low environmental load. Management choices in terms of feeding, animal density and nutrient distribution are at least as important in order to obtain a low nutrient loss potential.

Nitrate leaching following cultivation of contrasting temporary grassland. Organic Eprints

The N-surplus in grazed grassland is much higher than in cut grassland. Therefore, the residual effects of three years of temporary grassland on nitrate leaching in the following cereal crop were determined. Grassland managements were either cut leys or grazing with dairy cows in both pure grass and grass-clover mixtures. The cows were fed two levels of N in the supplements. Grassland management had little effect on the subsequent nitrate leaching, which ranged from 6 to 36 kg N ha-1, even though the surplus after three years of grassland ranged from 36 to 984 kg N ha-1. Ændringen i EU's landbrugspolitik (CAP) indebærer en afkobling af landbrugsstøtten og en afvikling af den nuværende hektarstøtte. Derved øges græsmarkernes værdi fordi græs vil konkurrere bedre med de øvrige grovfoderemner rent prismæssigt. I fremtiden forventes derfor en betydelig højere græsandel i kvægbrugenes sædskifter end det er tilfældet i dag. Samtidig betyder strukturudviklingen, at kvæggårdene bliver større og et stigende antal brug ikke kan afgræsse alle marker i sædskiftet, da afgræsning langt fra gården er besværlig eller helt uforeneligt med de daglige rutiner. This may be due to the difficulties of studying root longevity and turnover in situ in mixtures. Gross sulphur mineralisation-immobilisation turnover in soil amended with plant residues Organic Eprints

The rates of sulphur (S) released to and removed from the soil inorganic pool were estimated using the isotopic dilution technique. In an initial study fresh soil was mixed with combinations of two inorganic S levels (0 and 10 µg S g-1 soil) and three plant residues (wheat straw, perennial ryegrass and oilseed rape) and followed over 32 days of incubation. As 35S recovery was inadequate prior to day 2 and re-mineralisation of immobilised 35S occurred after day 8 thereby invalidating the method, estimates of gross S transformation rates should be based on data sampled between days 2 and 8. Simulation of residual effects and nitrate leaching after incorporation of different ley types Organic Eprints

The FASSET farm model was used to simulate production in an experiment where a grass-clover or a grass ley was either cut or grazed with dairy cows receiving low or high N sup-plements. The six different ley types were ploughed in and followed by three years with spring cereals with undersown catch crops. The original model was extended with a new grass and clover model, which included the capability to simulate rhizodeposition and root growth. The new model predicted the observed annual carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) production satisfactorily. The simulated first year residual effects of a cut grass or grass-clover ley varied between 0 and 34, while the residual effect of a grazed grass or grass-clover ley varied between 71 and 150 fertilizer equivalents...

For 20-30 år siden udgjorde nedfaldet af S fra atmosfæren op imod 40 kg/ha om året. En reduktion af forureningen fra afbrænding af olie og kul har sænket dette til under 10 kg, og planterne har derfor i dag et reelt behov for supplerende tilførsel af S. Der har dog været tvivl om nødvendigheden af S-tilførsel til husdyrgødet vårbyg, og i en række forsøg er der ikke opnået signifikante merudbytter. Det skal her kort opridses hvilke faktorer, der har betydning for, hvornår S-tilførsel er nødvendig. I nitratfølsomme vandindvindingsområder med landbrugsproduktion tilrådes af forsigtighedshensyn en grænseværdi på 50 mg nitrat pr. liter i nedsivningsvandet. Til trods for et lavere udvaskningspotentiale i økologisk end i konventionelt jordbrug, så har økologisk jordbrug ikke altid nitratkoncentrationer under grænseværdien – det gælder især på kvægbrugene. Årsagen er, at intensive afgræsningssystemer forøger tabsrisikoen pga. at drøvtyggere udskiller 75-95% af deres N-indtag i gødningen, og hovedparten af dette bliver afsat i marken under afgræsning. På den måde sker der en betydelig opbygning af N i afgræsningsmarker, og ved ompløjning frigives derfor hyppigt N i et omfang, som den efterfølgende afgrøde ikke er i stand til at udnytte med nitratudvaskning...

Multispecies leys contain different ecosystem services, and feed resources for pollinators can possibly be one. The challenge is to construct grassland with different flowering species and with a continuous flowering without compromising yield and herbage quality. Nitrate leaching from silage maize Organic Eprints

During the last 20 years the area with maize in Denmark has increased dramatically and reached 163,000 ha in 2008. Silage maize is easy to grow, is a suitable fodder for cows and goes well with grass-clover in the diet. This means that silage maize is often found in crop rotations with grass-clover on sandy soils in western Denmark. The ploughing in of grass-clover fields poses a serious risk of increased nitrate leaching on a coarse sandy soil, even when carried out in spring. Soil structure is inherited from the last tillage operations (ploughing, harrowing) and evolves during the leys because of climate, earthworms and roots activity, fertilisation, cutting operations or cattle trampling. Herbs in high producing organic grasslands – effect of management Organic Eprints

In many organic grasslands herbs are established due to their expected beneficial properties for nutritive value and biodiversity. However, knowledge about grassland herbs is limited. Three mixtures were therefore established at different grazing/cutting and fertilization managements to examine the growth potential and feeding value. The competitiveness of the different species varied greatly. Chicory, plantain and caraway were competitive in mixtures with traditional grassland species. Lotus and salad burnet were weak competitors and chervil and sainfoin were very weak. The feeding value was also highly variable.
