Workshop on Estimation with the RDBES data model (WKRDB-EST; outputs from 2019 meeting). ArchiMer
ICES.
The RDBES is the new Regional DataBase and Estimation System. The RDBES is expected to replace the previous RDB and InterCatch by the end of 2021 and will bring significant improve-ments and transparency in the provision of estimates from commercial fisheries to stock assess-ment and other end-users. The developments of the RDBES meet the EU-MAP requirements of progress towards statistically sound sampling schemes. The RDBES data model and associated database are able to store, among other, sampling data alongside the elements required to de-scribe the sampling design used in data collection. Upload of data to and estimation within the RDBES will require significant adaptation of the data collection processes of national institutes in several areas,...

Workshop on Guidelines for Management Strategy Evaluations (WKGMSE2). ArchiMer
ICES.
The purpose of the meeting was to bring up to date the methodologies and technical specifica-tions that should be incorporated in Management Strategy Evaluation (MSE) work in ICES. The workshop was tasked with reviewing recent methodological and practical MSE work conducted in ICES and around the world, as well as the guidelines provided by the 2013 ICES Workshop on Guidelines for Management Strategy Evaluations (WKGMSE). The Terms of Reference indi-cated that the revision should include all aspects involved in MSE, while paying specific atten-tion to several issues that had been identified through ICES practice. The Terms of Reference also requested WKGMSE 2 to consider how best to disseminate the guidelines to experts within the ICES community and the...

Workshop on Methods to develop a swept-area based effort index (WKSABI) ArchiMer
ICES.
The Workshop on methods to develop a swept-area based effort index (WKSABI) was held at ICES HQ, Copenhagen, on 8–9 January 2019 under the co-chairmanship of Kai Wieland, Denmark, and Henrik Degel, Denmark. The workshop was attended by 12 participants representing seven different countries. The objectives of the workshop were to adopt and agree on swept-area based effort indices for trawl surveys available in DATRAS and define and describe MFSD indicators using these swept-area based indices. Surveys considered where the North Sea International Bottom Trawl Survey, the Northeast Atlantic International Bottom Trawl Surveys and the Baltic International Trawl Survey. MFSD indicators considered were Marine Litter and the Large Fish Indicator (LFI). In total,...

Workshop on micro increment daily growth in European Anchovy and Sardine (WKMIAS). 21-25 October 2013 Mazara del Vallo, Sicily ArchiMer
ICES.
The Workshop on Micro increment daily growth in European Anchovy and Sardine (WKMIAS) met for the first time from 21-25th October 2013 in Mazara del Vallo, Sicily (CNR-IAMC). The meeting was chaired by Gualtiero Basilone (CNR-IAMC, Italy), Begoña Villamor (IEO, Spain) and Mario La Mesa (CNR-ISMAR, Italy). Six nations were represented by 22 participants. WKMIAS was proposed by the Planning Group on Commercial Catches, Discards and Biological Sampling (PGCCDBS) 2012. Many activities of this group are closely linked to the activities of the Data Collection framework (DCF). Although under the ICES have been made multiple age reading workshops at annual scale, this was the first time that a workshop was dedicated exclusively to age reading at daily scale. The...

Workshop on Population of the RDBES Data Model (WKRDB-POP). ArchiMer
ICES.
The aims of this workshop were to explain the new RDBES data model, assist in populating it with real data, and identify any issues or problems. The data model was explained using a combination of presentations and hands-on sessions. A set of evaluation discussions was held in plenary. During the hands-on sessions, participants worked on mapping their own data to the RDBES data model with guidance from the “RDBES Core Group” members (the group of people developing the RDBES data model). Participants were encouraged to complete the hands-on sessions in the order presented in the agenda and were able to progress at their own pace. Although issues have been identified and are documented in this report it is not thought that any of them are serious impediments...

Workshop on scoping of physical pressure layers causing loss of benthic habitats D6C1– methods to operational data products (WKBEDLOSS). ArchiMer
ICES.
The workshop on scoping of physical pressure layers causing loss of benthic habitats D6C1– methods to operational data products (WKBEDLOSS) is part of a stepwise process to delivering advice on sea-floor integrity for the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). In collaboration with its strategic partners, the high level objectives undertaken by ICES within the project were: 1) to identify benthic physical disturbance pressure layers available within ICES and the European and wider marine community across the four EU (MSFD) regions – including the mapping of pertinent data flows and the establishment of criteria needed to ensure the practical use of the data in assessing benthic impact – in the workshop WKBEDPRES1 (ICES HQ 24–26 October 2018); 2) to...
