Interim Report of the Working Group on Fisheries, Acoustics, Science and Technology. 4-7 April 2017 Nelson, New Zealand ArchiMer
ICES.
The ICES Working Group on Fisheries Acoustics, Science and Technology (WGFAST) is the only international forum where individuals working in fisheries acoustics can network to discuss ongoing developments in the technique. As such, it has been highly successful, attracting 63 participants from 16 countries to its meeting in Nelson, New Zealand from 4-7 April 2017. Highlights The major themes addressed during the WGFAST meeting included: • Behaviour; • Acoustic properties of marine organisms; • Emerging technologies, methodologies, and protocols; • Applications of acoustic methods to characterize ecosystems. A separate session was held for each theme, where the participants first presented the latest results of their work, followed by a discussion. The...

Interim Report of the Working Group on Fisheries -induced Evolution (WGEVO). 18- 20 October 2016, Laxenburg, Austria ArchiMer
ICES.
The Working Group on Fisheries-induced Evolution (WGEVO) met twice in 2016: once remotely from 27 to 29 September 2016 and once in person at IIASA, Laxenburg, Austria from 18 to 20 October 2016. WGEVO pursued its effort to assemble evidence of fisheries-induced evolution and its consequences for the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable exploitation of marine species. Specifically, 2 individual-based eco-genetic models were developped for reconstructing the historical effect of fishing on the evolution of life-history traits describing growth, maturation and reproduction during the 20th century in 2 major exploited stocks, namely northeast Arctic cod (Eikeset et al. 2016) and North Sea plaice (Mollet et al. 2016a) WGEVO applied Evolutionary Impact...

Interim Report of the Working Group on Fisheries-induced Evolution (WGEVO). 12-14 June 2017, Laxenburg, Austria ArchiMer
ICES.
The Working Group on Fisheries-induced Evolution (WGEVO) met thrice in 2017: twice remotely from 20 to 21 March 2017 and from 5 to 6 April 2017 and once in person at IIASA, Laxenburg, Austria from 12 to 14 June 2017. WGEVO pursued its effort to assemble evidence of fisheries-induced evolution and its consequences for the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable exploitation of marine species. Specifically, it was demonstrated experimentally on a freshwater model species that hypoxia or reduced ambient oxygen can lead to plastic effects on growth, maturation and reproduction in a direction similar to that of genetic changes induced by size-selective fishing, thus acting as a potential confounding factor of fisheries-induced evolution (Diaz Pauli et al....

Interim Report of the Working Group on Fisheries-Induced Evolution (WGEVO). 7-11 July 2014 IJmuiden, the Netherlands ArchiMer
ICES.
The Working Group on Fisheries-induced Evolution (WGEVO) met during 7–11 July 2014 at the Institute for Marine Resources and Ecosystem Studies in IJmuiden, the Netherlands. WGEVO strives to (i) assemble and review empirical evidence of fisher-ies-induced evolution and its consequences for the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable exploitation of marine species within an ecosystem context, (ii) apply and extend the framework for evolutionary impact assessments, and (iii) develop scien-tific and methodological tools to monitor and respond appropriately to risks to bio-diversity and sustainable exploitation posed by fisheries-induced evolution, with a particular emphasis on making these tools readily available for a broader range of scientists and...

Interim Report of the Working Group on Integrative Physical-Biological and Ecosystem Modelling. 13-15 June 2017 Oristano, Italy ArchiMer
ICES.
The Working Group on Integrative Physical-Biological and Ecosystem Modelling (WGIPEM) met in Oristano, Italy, on 13–15 June 2017. Presentations of the latest mod-elling work done within WGIPEM ToRs were given in plenary. End-to-end models (Atlantis, Osmose) have been used to explore trade-offs between fishing strategies, in the context of MSY targets. While validation of integrated model output is required to be used for advice, a comparison of different performance indices illustrated that the perception of the goodness-of-fit of complex models (e.g. ISIS-Fish) depends on the metrics and visualization tools used. Several tools have also been presented and dis-cussed within the group, among which a R-package to handle outputs of Atlantis model and create...

Interim Report of the Working Group on Multispecies Assessment Methods (WGSAM), 16–20 October 2017, San Sebastian, Spain ArchiMer
ICES.
The pan-regional Working Group on Multispecies Assessment Methods (WGSAM) met in San Sebastian, Spain, 16–20 October 2017. In this eleventh report of the group, work focused on three of the multi-annual ToRs (B, C, D). Based on their knowledge, participants provided an updated inventory of progress of multispecies models in ICES Ecoregions (ToR A), noting those regions where no in-formation was available. A Key Run (ToR B) of the North Sea Stochastic Multispecies Model (SMS) was pre-sented and reviewed in detail by 4 WGSAM experts, and approved by the group following implementation of changes agreed in plenary at the meeting and verified by a subset of experts post-meeting. The Key Run is documented in detail in Annex for ToR B, with key outputs summarised...
