Fustec, A; Desbruyeres, Daniel; Laubier, Lucien.
Authors used photogrammetric and videogrammetric data collected at 13 degree N/EPR by the French manned submersible Cyana during the Biocyatherm and Biocyarise cruises to estimate the biomass of vent fauna. Two distinct faunal assemblages are associated with low- and high-temperature vents, Vestimentifera. The former, characterized by giant tube worms and bivalves, the latter by the so-called "Pompeii worms" (Alvinellidae). The cold vent biomass may reach 8.5 kg m super(2), far in excess of the hot vent biomass which amounts to 2.4 kg. Such a difference is linked to higher integrated symbiosis between primary and secondary producers in cold vent assemblages, hot vent secondary production being dependent upon separate ingestion/digestion processes.

Evidence for differences in the allozyme thermostability of deep-sea hydrothermal vent polychaetes (Alvinellidae): a possible selection by habitat ArchiMer
Jollivet, D; Desbruyeres, Daniel; Ladrat, Christine; Laubier, Lucien.
Alvinellid polychaetes are, to date, restricted to deep-sea hydrothermal vents of the eastern and the western ridges of the Pacific Ocean. These organisms Live in various sulfide-rich habitats, including the hottest part of the hydrothermal environment (i.e. chimneys). They experience transient anoxia, high levels of heavy metals and H2S, natural radioactivity and temperatures ranging from 5 to 80 degrees C which vary greatly with time. The Alvinellidae, as many vent organisms, have developed specific adaptations to cope with this harsh and unstable environment. Enzyme systems are good markers of the adaptation of ectotherms to temperature, which acts on both enzyme kinetics and protein denaturation. We estimated genetic distances between 11 alvinellid...

Olivet, Jean-louis; Le Pichon, Xavier; Laubier, Lucien.
The cold waters from the Norwegian Sea are the main source of the underflow system in the northern Atlantic Ocean (10) (pl. 1, fig. 1b). The role of these currents in the formation of large sediment ripples has been demonstrated in some recent studies [(2), (3)]. As in the southern Atlantic Ocean, the observations suggested that their influence had been of importance since the Eocene era (6). From a sedimentological point of view, it appears that the Gibbs fracture (4) represents a very important feature in this system; this structure both forms a deep opening through the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and a dam across the abyssal plain to the northeast of Newfoundland. This dam, which is still active today, though partly flooded, must have been continuous from the...

Laubier, Lucien.
To put it simply, marine ecosystems can be classified into two main categories: oligotrophic ecosystems and eutrophic ecosystems. Oligotrophic ecosystems are characterized by vegetal and animal communities whose composition is stable throughout time, and in which the total amount of available nutritive mineral salts is transformed into living organic matter through photosynthesis.
Based on specimens collected in the western Mediterranean, a redescription is provided of Brementia balneolensis Chatton - Brément, notodelphyid copepod parasitic in the ascidian Polysyncraton canetensis Brément. In the same host lives another species of Notodelphyidae new to science, whose general morphology is similar to that of B. balneolensis, from which it differs definitely by numerous characteristics. Our present knowledge of the phylogeny of ophioseidimorph Notodelphyidae refrained the authors to establish a new genus for this new species, described under the name of Brementia illgi. A discussion on phylogenetic trends in the genus Brementia and its relationships with other Notodelphyidae, together with some remarks on the host specificity of...

Laubier, Lucien; Katzmann, Werner.
Four species of the genus Fauveliopsis are described or revised: F. brevis (HARTMAN, 1965) F. adriatica sp.n., F. fauchaldi sp.n., and one form that is closely related to F. adriatica. HARTMAN (1971) stated the genus only for the deep sea, but this study makes sure that Fauveliopsis species are also inhabiting shallow regions of the sea: F. adriatica was found in a depth of 60 m. A complete dichotomous key of all hitherto known species of the genus Fauveliopsis concludes this paper. [NOT CONTROLLED OCR]

Le genre Staurosoma will (copépode parasite d'actinies) en mer rouge ArchiMer
Laubier, Lucien; Schmidt, Hajo.
The members of the genus Staurosoma Will, 1844 are Copepods gallicol, parasites of Actiniae. The genus currently consists of two species, Staurosoma parasiticum Will, 1844, parasite of Anemonia sulcata Pennant, 1766 (= Actinia viridis) from the Mediterranean coasts (Will, 1844), in the Cape of La Hague area (English Channel) and the Gulf of Marseille (Caullery and Mesnil, 1902), and S. caulleryi Okada, 1927, parasite of Nemanthus nitidus (Wassilieff, 1908) (= Sagartianitida) in the Bay of Sagami in Japan. De Zulueta (1911) created for this unique genus the family Staurosomidae, a family that some more recent authors relate to Copepods Chondracanthidae. An update of the current knowledge was provided by Bouligand (1966), who details the differences between...

Over the last three decades, offshore shrimp catches have developed in a very impressive way. An important demand on the international market resulted in a slight rise in the selling prices, and lead to a rise in the exploitation of areas already exploited, as well as a search for new fishing areas. In twenty years, the world total of shrimp fisheries has more than doubled, and reached 1 024 000 tonnes in 1972 (source F.A.O., Statistiques annuelles des pêches); [...]

Laubier, Lucien; Picard, Chantal; Ramos, Jeanete.
From two series of specimens of the genus Heterospio (Polychaetous Annelids, sedentaria) collected in the western Mediterranean, the authors describe two new species : the first one (H. mediterranena sp. n.) lives in bathyal muds, the second one ( H . reducta sp. n.) inhabits the abyssal plain. The two new species are compared with the two (or three) other species previously known. These samples corroborate the recent discovery of a single specimen of this rare genus in the Mediterranean.
Laubier, A; Laubier, Lucien.
Since nearly twenty years, world exploitation of crustaceans increases from 1,263,000 tons in 1968 to 3,419,000 tons in 1985, overcoming the predictions of 1970 by more than one million tons. Penaeid prawns fisheries experienced a very fast development. The krill resource proved to be practically commercially unworkable. By now, the major crustaceans stocks appear fully exploited. During the same period, penaeid aquaculture experienced a fast growth, which should continue in the near future.

Malacoceros samurai, a new species of Spionidae (Annelids : Polychaeta) from hydrothermal vent chimney walls on the south East Pacific Rise ArchiMer
Hourdez, Stéphane; Desbruyeres, Daniel; Laubier, Lucien.
Malacoceros samurai, new species, (Spionidae) is described from deep-sea hydrothermal vents of the southern East Pacific Rise, at 17 degrees 25'S. It is a large species, living on chimney walls along with Avinella spp. Although this species is described in the genus Malacoceros, it possesses unidentate hooded hooks and anterior scalpel-like aristate neurosetae, both characters which clearly differentiate it from other species of the same genus. These unusual characters require the modification of the generic diagnosis of Malacoceros.

Marine crustacean farming: present status and perspectives ArchiMer
Laubier, Annie; Laubier, Lucien.
For centuries, several species of prawns and crabs have been raised from wild-caught juveniles in coastal brackish-water fish ponds in various countries of south east Asia. The Indonesian "tambaks" are well known examples of such traditional practices. In western countries, since the turn of the century, advances of marine biology and fast increase of marine fisheries enabled the development of large-scale production and release of larval stages of American and European lobsters in a fruitless attempt to restock natural populations. After the Second World War, the increasing demand for crustaceans in United States and Japan was satisfied by opening new prawn fisheries all over the world. A major breakthrough was achieved with the development of hatchery...
