Bioactive properties and chemical composition of six walnut (Juglans regia L.) cultivars IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

The chemical composition, antioxidant potential and antimicrobial activity were studied in six walnuts (Juglans regia L.) cultivars (cv. Franquette, Lara, Marbot, Mayette, Mellanaise and Parisienne) produced in Portugal. Concerning their chemical composition the main constituent of fruits was fat ranging from 78.83% to 82.14%, being the nutritional value around 720 kcal per 100 g of fruits. Linoleic acid was the major fatty acid reaching the maximum value of 60.30% (cv. Lara) followed by oleic, linolenic and palmitic acids. Biological potential of fungi associated to Prays oleae in Trás-os-Montes (Northeastern region of Portugal) IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

Olive groves represent an important fraction of the agricultural practices in Portugal, mainly in the region of Trás-os-Montes. Our work pretends to disclose the fungal diversity associated to one of the major olives pests, the Prays oleae Bern. Besides evaluating the extent of the presence of entomopathogenic fungi, we also intend to reveal other promising fungi with potential to be used as biological control agents. In order to achieve this goal, larvae and pupae of the three generations of P.oleae were collected from several orchards. In Portugal chestnut tree (Castanea sativa Miller) has an economic, social and landscape importance. Trás-os-Montes, in the Northeast of the country, is the first Portuguese fruit producer region with 80% of the production. The fruits produced in this region are of high quality, that was been recognized by the European Union with Protected Denomination of Origin "Castanha da Terra Fria ", however, every year the attack of pests is a problem that . cause serious losses. The chestnut moth Laspeyresia (= Cydia) splendana Hubner is the most serious pest of chestnut fruit in several countries.

Brassica oleracea var. costata: comparative study on organic acids and biomass production with other cabbage varieties IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

BACKGROUND: A study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of agronomic practices, harvesting time and leaf age on the organic acid composition and biomass production of Brassica oleracea L. var. costata DC (tronchuda cabbage). Samples were cultivated under eight different fertilisation regimes (two levels each of nitrogen, boron and sulfur, an organic fertiliser and no fertiliser) and collected at three different times. RESULTS: Principal component analysis of the data indicated significant differences. Three principal components with an eigenvalue higher than one accounted for 79.0% of the total variance of the data set. O mel é consumido em larga escala no mundo inteiro e desempenha um papel importante na dieta humana, sendo também utilizado nas indústrias alimentar, farmacêutica e de cosméticos. A composição do mel é variável e depende da fonte floral usada na recolha do néctar, do clima, das condições ambientais e sazonais, bem como do manuseamento e do processamento. Trás-os-Montes é uma das principais regiões produtoras de azeite a nível nacional, onde é produzido azeite com a Denominação de Origem Protegida “Azeite de Trás-os-Montes”. De uma forma geral, estes azeites resultam de uma mistura de diferentes cultivares, maioritariamente Cobrançosa, Madural e Verdeal Transmontana, sendo permitida a presença de outras, ainda que em menor proporção. A qualidade de um azeite depende de diversos factores, nomeadamente das praticas agronómicas, do estado sanitária dos frutos, das fases sucessivas de colheita, de armazenamento e de transformação. A composição química do produto final está directamente relacionada com a estado e composição do fruto do qual é extraído. A maturação das azeitonas é um processo lento que se prolonga durante vários meses, ao longo do qual ocorrem numerosos processos de transformação química e de síntese de substancias orgânicas . Assim, o estabelecimento de uma época óptima de colheita, por forma a obter um rendimento máximo de extracção e as melhores características qualitativas do produto final.

Olive oil is the principal lipid source of the Mediterranean countries being largely consumed in Portugal. In the last years, the olive oil sector showed a great dynamics and olive oils with Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and varietal olive oils (olive oils from just one cultivar) are introduced in the market In this context, this work intends to contribute for a better knowledge of the most representative cultivars of Olea europaea L grown in Tnis-os-Montes and Beira Interior, regions with importance in the production of these products. 34 samples of olives belonging to 14 olive cultivars were analyzed.

The phenolic compounds and organic acids of turnip (Brassica rapa var. rapa L.) edible parts (leaves and stems, flower buds and roots) were determined by HPLC–DAD and HPLC–UV, respectively. Chemical assessment and in vitro antioxidant capacity of Ficus carica latex IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

Ficus species possess latex-like material within their vasculatures, affording protection and selfhealing from physical attacks. In this work, metabolite profiling was performed on Ficus carica latex. Volatiles profile was determined by HS-SPME/GC-IT-MS, with 34 compounds being identified, distributed by distinct chemical classes: 5 aldehydes, 7 alcohols, 1 ketone, 9 monoterpenes, 9 sesquiterpenes and 3 other compounds. Sesquiterpenes constituted the most abundant class in latex (ca. 91% of total identified compounds). Hazelnut (Corylus avellana L.) is a very popular dry fruit in the world being consumed in different form and presentations. In the present work, three hazelnut cultivars (cv. Daviana, Fertille de Coutard and M. Bollwiller) produced in Portugal, were characterized in respect to their chemical composition, antioxidant potential and antimicrobial activity. This paper evaluates the usefulness of three chemical parameters (compositions on tocopherols, sterols and fatty acids) as a tool to discriminate three varietal olive oils (Cvs. Cobrançosa, Madural and Verdeal Transmontana), which are permitted cultivars for the production of ‘‘Trás-os-Montes olive oil’’, a Portuguese protected designation of origin (PDO) product. This work aimed to use artificial neural networks for fruit classification according to olive cultivar, as a tool to guarantee varietal authenticity. So, 70 samples, each one containing, in general, 40 olives, belonging to the six most representative olive cultivars of Trás-os-Montes region (Cobrançosa, Cordovil, Madural, Negrinha de Freixo, Santulhana and Verdeal Transmontana) were collected in different groves and during four crop years.
