A comparative study of litter quantity and qulity, decompositon rates, and the abundance, biomass, and respiration of soil-inhabiting microbes, arthropods and oligochaetes has been started in 1997. The three study sites are a primary forest, a 13-year old secondary forest and polyculture plantation system consisting of four commercially used tree species planted in rows between adventitious vegetation. The aim is to evaluate the specific contribution of the soil microflora and of the different functional soil fauna groups to the decomposition of organic matter and the resulting nutrient supply to the plants. The species composition, abundance and biomass of eartworms were determined in two plots of a polyculture forestry plantation and in plots of nearby secondary and primary forest as part of the SHIFT Project ENV 52 since 1997, with objective to study the regeneration and better use of already degrade plots, to diminish the human impact on primary rain forest in Amazonia (Brasil).

A study of macrofauna and decompositon in three central Amazonian ecosystems (a primary and a secondary forest and tow polyculture tree plantations) has shown the high importance of the macrofauna for the litter decompostion. Macrofauna biomass was highest in the primary forest and lowest in the secondary forest. It differed strongly between the two polyculture areas, probably due to different microclimatic conditions near the ground as influenced principally by density of secondary vegetation (cover) and shading by the neighboring forest. Litter decompositon in the central Amazon polycultures follows the same principles than in primary forest, e.g. the macrofauna regulates the decompostion rates. However the structure of the decomposer community differs...

Study focusing: 1) identification of suitable test soil fauna species, test condition and test endpoints; 2) performance of successful (i.e. reproducible) laboratory tests using two pesticides relevant for Embrapa; 3) in close interaction with other parts of the planned project: Extrapolation of these experiences to the mocrcosm and field level (agroforestry plantations); 4) inclusion of function endpoints on the latter tow levels; and 5) formulation of test guidelines (according to OECD standards.

Abstract ? The objective of this work was to determine how taxonomy benefited from the ecological quantitative and site-based sampling methods in enchytraeids studies. Enchytraeids (small relatives of earthworms) were sampled in different phases of rain forest regeneration in the southern Mata Atlântica in Paraná, Brazil. The research combined ecological and taxonomic work, because enchytraeids are poorly studied and difficult to identify, and many new species were expected. The provision of large numbers of specimens enabled the test of species diagnoses by investigating the ranges of character variations in a larger series of specimens. Abstract ??The aim of this study was to evaluate abundance, biomass and diversity of earthworms in the southern coast region of the Mata AtlÔntica biodiversity hotspot. Aátotal of 51ástudy sites in pastures, banana monocultures, mixed agroforestry systems, secondary forests in succession and old-growth forests near the coast of Paranß, Brazil, were evaluated. Each site was sampled once. Species richness of the earthworms was generally low and varied little between sites. At all sites except for one, the peregrine species Pontoscolex corethrurus (Glossoscolecidae) strongly dominated. The aim of this work was to evaluate whether terrestrial model ecosystems (TMEs) are a useful tool for the study of the effects of litter quality, soil invertebrates and mineral fertilizer on litter decomposition and plant growth under controlled conditions in the tropics. Forty-eight intact soil cores (17.5-cm diameter, 30-cm length) were taken out from an abandoned rubber plantation on Ferralsol soil (Latossolo Amarelo) in Central Amazonia, Brazil, and kept at 28°C in the laboratory during four months.
