Herausforderungen für den Wissenstransfer in der Schweiz Organic Eprints
Alfoeldi, Thomas; Weidmann, Gilles; Schmid, Otto; Niggli, Urs.

Kilcher, Lukas; Weidmann, Gilles; Garibay, Salvador V..
The first IFOAM Training Manual for Organic Agriculture in the Tropics (the Basic Manual) was published in 2004. The Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) together with partners of the organic movement in the Tropics were commissioned by IFOAM to complete two new training manuals that build on the Basic Manual. The new IFOAM training manuals address the two basic climatic zones of the Tropics, the Arid and Semi-Arid Tropics, and the Humid Tropics. For both new manuals, already existing material was collected, screened and condensed into comprehensive training manuals. Additionally, a large number of farmers, trainers and scientists were asked for their experience. Partner institutions from the Tropics actively collaborated in the development...

Disseminaton: Tips, tricks and lessons learnt Organic Eprints
Alföldi, Thomas; Weidmann, Gilles.
A continuous dissemination process during the lifetime of a research project is important. However, it remains a challenge for many research consortia as dissemination of intermediate results might have negative consequences for publishing in peer-reviewed journals. Based on an analysis of the dissemination output of eight European research projects, we provide recommendations to researchers on dissemination tools and channels to ensure a continuous knowledge exchange and information flow. We also propose additional criteria to be considered by funding bodies when selecting and evaluating research proposals.

Mit Vielfalt punkten – Bauern beleben die Natur - Jahresbericht 2015 Organic Eprints
Birrer, Simon; Bircher, Richard; Chevillat, Véronique; Graf, Roman; Hagist, Dominik; Home, Robert; Jenny, Markus; Pfiffner, Lukas; Stoeckli, Sibylle; Steinemann, Beatrice; Weidmann, Gilles; Zellweger-Fischer, Judith.

Birrer, Simon; Bircher, Richard; Chevillat, Véronique; Graf, Roman; Hagist, Dominik; Jenny, Markus; Pfiffner, Lukas; Stoeckli, Sibylle; Steinemann, Beeatrice; Weidmann, Gilles; Zellweger-Fischer, Judith.

Calculate the risk of wireworm infestation in the field Organic Eprints
Dierauer, Hansueli; Weidmann, Gilles; Siegrist, Franziska.
• In spring, with a soil temperature of at least 8 °C, place a pot full of cereal or maize grains into water and allow it soak for 24 hours. • Spread out the soaked grains on about 20 cardboard or plastic plates, pot traps, stockings with adequate mesh size or similar materials. Sealable containers must have several holes; through which the worms can access the trap. • Position the traps at a depth of 10 cm with at least 10 to 15 traps per field. The more traps per ha, the more reliable the results. Cover the traps with earth to soil-level and mark the locations. • After 7 to 10 days, dig out the traps, collect them and count the wireworms. • If one or more wireworms per trap is found, the field is infested quite strongly: economic losses are to be...

No-till cultivation of maize in rolled forage peas Organic Eprints
Dierauer, Hansueli; Siegrist, Franziska; Weidmann, Gilles.
The non-tilled, constantly covered soil has improved water retention and also shows a better carrying capacity during harvest, and is less affected by weed infestation, compaction, nutrient-leaching, and erosion. Stockless farms especially benefit from the nitrogen input of the legume-green manure. • At the beginning of August, carry out 1 to 2 stubble-tillage operations after cereal or rape harvest. • Sow the wintering forage peas in October. • At the end of May, kink the peas' stems with a knife-cylinder roller, after which you drill in the maize with row cleaners. The green manure lying on the ground must be properly dried off for sowing. • The mineralisation performance, lowered due to the soil cover, can be compensated for with focused nitrogen...

Use of rock dust against the rape pollen beetle Organic Eprints
Daniel, Claudia; Conder, Malgorzata; Weidmann, Gilles.
Through the use of rock dust at the beginning of the bud development, the infestation by the rapeseed beetle can be reduced by an average of one third. In the treated area the pods per square meter increased by up to a quarter, thereby increasing the yield in treated areas by around 25 %. Practical recommendation • Optimal time of treatment: The rape pollen beetles enter the fields at a temperature of 15 °C. Therefore a first treatment with rock dust is appropriate as soon as this threshold has been reached and the buds become visible between the leaves and will be reached by the spray liquid (BBCH 52). • Note: Pollen beetle infestation is supported by late blooming, frequent rapeseed cultivation and cultivation close to woodland. • A second treatment...

Practice Abstract: Intercropping grain peas with barley Organic Eprints
Klaiss, Matthias; Siegrist, Franziska; Weidmann, Gilles.
Barley prevents pea lodging, thus reducing the losses during threshing, and increases the quality of the harvested crop. The cereal crop also improves the soil cover, suppressing weeds. Growing two crops at the same time reduces the risk of yield loss. • The seed bed should be not too fine-grained after cultivation or reduced tillage (advantage: better channel flow from deeper soil layers during drought periods). A further possibility is mulch-till, whilst on heavy soils a plough with subsoiler might be needed. Possibly application of green manure or compost. • For seeders with only a single tank, mix the seeds well at the ratio of 80 % peas and 40 % barley (relating to the standard sowing quantities of both crops) before filling the seeder. Until...
