Analysis of Agromorphological Descriptors to Differentiate between Duke Cherry (Prunus x gondouinii (Poit. & Turpin)Rehd.) and Its Progenitors: Sweet Cherry (Prunus avium L.) and Sour Cherry (Prunus cerasus L.) Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Pérez,Rodrigo; Navarro,Florentino; Sánchez,María Ángeles; Ortíz,Jesús María; Morales,Remedios.
The rapid identification of the hybrids between sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) and sour cherry (Prunus cerasus L.) is not easy. In order to resolve this problem, 18 Spanish sweet, sour and duke cherry cultivars were surveyed and characterized using 43 agromorphological descriptors evaluated in flowers, leaves, dormant 1-yr-old shoots, fruits, and trees during 2005 and 2006. Based on quantitative parameters, ANOVA and stepwise discriminant analysis (SDA) were carried out. For qualitative descriptors, statistical comparisons were done by means of the chi-square (χ2) test. As result of the study, two quantitative (titratable acidity and number of lenticels) and six qualitative descriptors (shape of the central and lateral lobes in the internal bracts...

Analysis of Hydraulic Conductance Components in Field Grown, Mature Sweet Cherry Trees Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Oyarzún,Ricardo; Stöckle,Claudio; Whiting,Matthew.
As a necessary step towards understanding soil water extraction and plant water relationships, the components of hydraulic conductance (K) of mature sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) trees were evaluated in situ based on a Ohm´s law analog method. In June 2004, K was determined for 10-yr-old ‘Bing’/‘Gisela® 5’ trees, from simultaneous measurements of whole canopy gas exchange and leaf (sunlit and shaded) and stem water potentials (Ψ). Leaf water potential of sunlit leaves was lower than shaded leaves, reaching minimum values of ca. -2.3 MPa around 14:00 h (solar time). Average total hydraulic conductance was 60 ± 6 mmol s-1 MPa-1, presenting a slight decreasing trend as the season progressed. The analysis of tree K components showed that it was...

Chiffelle,Italo; Huerta,Amanda; Azúa,Fernando; Puga,Karla; Araya,Jaime E.
Xanthogaleruca luteola Müller (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), a defoliator of Ulmus species currently present in several regions of central Chile, causes severe damage to trees, mainly in park areas, street tree-lines and gardens. The antifeeding and insecticidal activities of extracts from immature fruit of Melia azedarach L. (Meliaceae) were determined on adults of X. luteola in laboratory bioassays. Several concentrations of the extracts obtained with water and ethanol were used and their effectiveness and LC50 were determined. The antifeeding action of the water extracts caused 100% deterrence over concentrations of 3.6% w/v. Both extracts were effective insecticides against adults, causing 86% mortality (2.4% w/v), with a better performance of the...

Antioxidant Capacity and Total Phenolic Compounds of Twelve Selected Potato Landrace Clones Grown in Southern Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Ah-Hen,Kong; Fuenzalida,Carolina; Hess,Susan; Contreras,Andrés; Vega-Gálvez,Antonio; Lemus-Mondaca,Roberto.
Colored potatoes (Solanum tuberosum L.) provide a natural source of phytochemicals that help reduce the risk of diseases. However, there is a lack of information on the degree of variation of the antioxidant activity and polyphenolic contents of these native potatoes. Thus, the antioxidant activity (AA) and total phenolic content (TPC) of native Chilean potatoes were determined. Twelve potato landrace clones collected from established cultivations on Chiloe Island and Valdivia were selected. Total phenolic content and AA were compared with two commercial varieties, Shepody and Desirée. Total phenolic content was determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu method, and β-carotene bleaching was used to compare AA. The TPC varied in the peeled potato samples...

Antioxidant Capacity, Anthocyanins, and Total Phenols of Wild and Cultivated Berries in Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Guerrero C,Jaime; Ciampi P,Luigi; Castilla C,Andrea; Medel S,Fernando; Schalchli S,Heidi; Hormazabal U,Emilio; Bensch T,Emma; Alberdi L,Miren.
It is possible to incorporate a lot of natural antioxidants into the human organism by consuming berries which can prevent diseases generated by the action of free radicals. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals and thus protect the organism from the oxidative damage of lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Berries stand out as one of the richest sources of antioxidant phytonutrients among various fruits and vegetables. The objective of this research was to determine antioxidant capacity (AC), total anthocyanins (TA), and total phenols (TP) of wild and cultivated berries in different localities of La Araucanía and Los Ríos Regions in Chile. These parameters were analyzed by using the free radical 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl hydrate (DPPH) method,...

Xu-Guang,Liu; Fu-Ping,Song; Si-Yuan,Wen; Sheng-Qi,Wang; Da-Fang,Huang; Jie,Zhang.
We have developed a parallel, rapid, high-throughput oligonucleotide microarray-based assay for the reliable detection and genotyping of three cry genes (cry1, cry2 and cry9) in Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt). After the non-polymerase chain reaction (PCR), amplified Bt genomic DNA were fluorescent-labeled using a random primer.   The corresponding oligonucleotide probes were designed for the different cry genes that can hybridize Bt genomic DNA after cluster analysis and were printed on glass slides. This microarray has unambiguously detected and identified the cry genes in 10 isolates and reference Bt. Our data demonstrates that the microarray assay is simple and rapid for the detection and genotyping of genes. This type of assay is also a potentially...

Assesing Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) biotype B resistance in soybean genotypes: Antixenosis and antibiosis Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Gonçalves Franco da Silva,José Paulo; Lopes Baldin,Edson Luiz; Santana de Souza,Efrain; Lourenção,André Luiz.
Since it was first reported in Brazil in the 1990s, the B biotype of silverleaf whitefly (Bemisia tabaci Genn., Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) has been recognized as an important pest in soybeans (Glycine max L.), reducing the productivity of this legume species in some areas of the country. As an alternative to chemical control, the use of resistant genotypes represents an important tool for integrated pest management (IPM). This study evaluated the performance of 10 soybean genotypes prior to whitefly infestation, by testing attractiveness and preference for oviposition in the greenhouse and antibiosis in the laboratory. In a multiple-choice test, 'IAC-17' was the least attractive to insects. In a no-choice test, 'IAC-17' was the least attractive for egg...

Assessing the Transferability of Transpiration-use Efficiency Models of Biomass Production Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Kremer,Cristián; Stöckle,Claudio.
Transpiration-use efficiency (w), defined as the ratio of biomass produced per unit water transpired, has been used to evaluate crop performance under limited water supply. However, the lack of consistency of w values through different environmental conditions has not allowed, using it as a transferable parameter. Thus, simple approaches have been developed, including: 1) w = kDa Da¹ and; 2) w = kEto ETo-¹ where kDa and kETo are crop-dependent parameters, with the underlying concept that normalization by Da or ET0 would accounts for the effects of climate variations on w, while these parameters would be reasonably constant across diverse environments. The objective of this study was to assess the transferability of kDa and kET^0 for wheat...

Availability of Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium from Poultry Litter and Conventional Fertilizers in a Volcanic Soil Cultivated with Silage Corn Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Hirzel,Juan; Walter,Ingrid.
Poultry litter (PL) is an organic matter source used as soil amendment. Besides its important nutrient content, it is a cheap alternative to conventional fertilizers in crop production. The efficient use of PL also helps reduce the environmental problems normally associated with its disposal near poultry production farms. This article reports the relative effects of PL and conventional fertilizers on the availability of soil N, P and K, dry matter (DM) production and total nutrient content in silage corn (Zea mays L.). The field experiment was carried out in a soil derived from volcanic ash (Tipic Melanoxerands) of Central South Chile. Corn was grown for three seasons (2002-2005) and PL and conventional fertilizers were applied in the first two years. The...

Bayesian analysis of the genetic structure of a Brazilian popcorn germplasm using data from simple sequence repeats (SSR) Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Saavedra,Javier; Silva,Tereza Aparecida; Mora,Freddy; Scapim,Carlos Alberto.
Several studies have confirmed that popcorn (Zea mays L. var. everta) has a narrow genetic basis, which affects the quality of breeding programs. In this study, we present a genetic characterization of 420 individuals representing 28 popcorn populations from Brazilian germplasm banks. All individuals were genotyped using 11 microsatellite markers from the Maize Genetics and Genomics Database. A Bayesian clustering approach via Monte Carlo Markov chains was performed to examine the genetic differentiation (Fst values) among different clusters. The results indicate the existence of three distinct and strongly differentiated genetic groups (K = 3). Moreover, the Fst values (calculated among clusters) were significantly different according to Bayesian credible...
