Corbalán,Valeria E.; Ojeda,Ricardo A..
In the central portion of the Monte desert four small rodent species coexist: Graomys griseoflavus, Akodon molinae, Eligmodontia typus, and Calomys musculinus . Using the Convex Polygon Method, we assessed the home range of these species at different habitats and made comparisons among species, and between sexes and different seasons of the year. We found that home range did not differ among species, but there is a tendency to increase range size as the species corporal size increases. Overlapping of home range was different at different seasons of the year, probably due to different population densities, but home range size was constant along the year. Habitat type and sex affect home range only for G. griseoflavus and A. molinae, respectively.

Armored invaders in patagonia: recent southward dispersion of armadillos (Cingulata, Dasypodidae) Mastozool. neotrop.

Coda,José A; Martínez,Juan José; Steinmann,Andrea R; Priotto,José; Gomez,M. Daniela.

Bat assemblages at a high-altitude area in the atlantic forest of southeastern Brazil Mastozool. neotrop.
Moras,Ligiane M; Bernard,Enrico; Gregorin,Renato.
Most Brazilian landscapes lie below 600 m above sea level and studies on the rich Brazilian bat fauna at higher altitudes are scarce. In this study, we investigated bat assemblages associated with different habitats in Chapada do Abanador, Minas Gerais, an area with altitudes ranging from 1000 to 1580 m. Forty-five nights of sampling (153 000 m2h) were performed in semideciduous montane forest, cloud forest and campo de altitude. A total of 137 individuals were captured, belonging to 12 species of the families Phyllostomidae and Vespertilionidae, with a large dominance of the former. Species-accumulation curves reached values close to the asymptote for the campo de altitude and cloud forest habitats, but not for montane forest, suggesting that more species...

Bat fly (Diptera: Streblidae) parasitism in degraded and preserved areas in a Neotropical savanna Mastozool. neotrop.
Ramalho,Daniel F; Graciolli,Gustavo; Aguiar,Ludmilla M. S.
We assessed the relationship between bat fly parasitism and habitat degradation. We used mist nets to capture 522 individuals of Carollia perspicillata and 429 individuals from eight fly species in the Brazilian Cerrado. Specimens were captured in degraded areas surrounding protected areas and within the protected areas. Trichobius joblingi was the most frequent parasite of Carollia perspicillata; consequently, it was analyzed in greater detail. Sex and age were not critical factors for parasitism. A robust anthropogenic influence was observed; unexpectedly, a higher prevalence and abundance of bat flies were observed in preserved areas.

da Silva,Shirley S. P; Dias,Daniela; Martins,Mayara A; Guedes,Patrícia G; de Almeida,Juliana C; da Cruz,Alexandre P; Serra-Freire,Nicolau M; Damascena,Joyce dos S; Peracchi,Adriano L.
Whereas surveys of the bat fauna are available for some localities in the Brazilian Northeast, studies in the caatinga scrublands are still limited. The aim of this study was to survey the bat fauna in an area of caatinga scrublands in the Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN Serra das Almas), which is located on the Ibiapaba Plateau, State of Ceará. The bat assemblage of the reserve was surveyed in July 2012 (rainy season), and January 2013 (dry season), with a total of 19 sampling nights. We captured 347 individuals of 23 species representing six families. The bat fauna was characterized by the predominance of a few abundant species, in particular phyllostomid frugivores, and many rare species, which is frequent in studies based on mist nets at ground...

Bats of Saint Martin, French West Indies/Sint Maarten, Netherlands Antilles Mastozool. neotrop.
Genoways,Hugh H.; Pedersen,Scott C.; Larsen,Peter A.; Kwiecinski,Gary G.; Huebschman,Jeffrey J..
Six species of bats have been previously reported from the Antillean island of Saint Martin/Sint Maarten- Artibeus jamaicensis, Brachyphylla cavernarum, Molossus molossus, Tadarida brasiliensis, Noctilio leporinus, and Myotis nigricans nesopolus. Our field research reported herein documents an additional three species of bats from the island for the first time- Monophyllus plethodon, Ardops nichollsi, and Natalus stramineus. Re-examination of the single voucher of Myotis nigricans nesopolus has led us to exclude this species from the fauna of Saint Martin/Sint Maarten. Based on our field research and the study of specimens housed in museum collections, we present information on the eight species of bats that we have documented as occurring on Saint...

Behavioral counter-strategies against infanticide in corn mouse females, Calomys musculinus Mastozool. neotrop.
Coda,José A.; Priotto,José W.; Steinmann,Andrea R..
Based on the hypothesis that in C. musculinus both female territorial behavior and promiscuity are counter-strategies against infanticide by females and males respectively, our objective was to test the following predictions: (1) mother aggression deters infanticide by females; (2) previous matings prevent infanticide by males. We conducted 116 behavioral encounters between mothers and intruders to study the nest related behaviors. Mother-pups units (Mu) were grouped in three treatments in relation to the intruder feature: 55 Mu were placed with siring males, 27 Mu and 34 Mu were housed with non-siring males and reproductively active females, respectively. We also calculated offspring survival rate for each treatment. The nest related behaviors varied...

Castillo-Navarro,Yeimy; Serrano-Cardozo,Víctor H; Ramírez-Pinilla,Martha P.

Delomys dorsalis is restricted to the wet tropical and subtropical forests of southern and southeastern Brazil and northeastern Argentina . The reproductive cycle of this species was studied by the histological examination of the reproductive tracts of animals caught in an area of mixed forest with conifers (29º 23' S, 50º 23' W), in southern Brazil , and from observations on a laboratory group of individuals. Fourteen expeditions were carried out from February 1997 to April 1998, during approximately 3 nights, using 140 live traps set on the ground and on branches between 1.5 and 2.0 m high. Reproductively active individuals were observed year round, although winter was marked by a reduction in breeding activity resulting from recruitment. Females showed...
