Managing soil carbon for climate change mitigation and adaptation in Mediterranean cropping systems: A meta-analysis Organic Eprints

Mediterranean croplands are seasonally dry agroecosystems with low soil organic carbon (SOC) content and high risk of land degradation and desertification. The increase in SOC is of special interest in these systems, as it can help to build resilience for climate change adaptation while contributing to mitigate global warming through the sequestration of atmospheric carbon (C). We compared SOC change and C sequestration under a number of recommended management practices (RMPs) with neighboring conventional plots under Mediterranean climate (174 data sets from 79 references). Valuing international marine resources: A meta-analysis on the Baltic Sea Organic Eprints

The study uses meta-analysis to provide insights into the value of international marine resources, illustrating the issue with the case of the Baltic Sea. Willingness to pay for water quality improvements varies systematically with factors such as a country's income level, characteristics of the change in water quality, water body type, study year and methodology. The results of the meta-analysis are applied to benefit transfer in order to assess the distribution of the benefits of marine protection measures between the Baltic Sea countries and to compare the results with previous research. The net benefits of protecting the Baltic are positive, but they are asymmetrically distributed between the littoral countries.

Crop yields and supply of nitrogen compared in conventional and organic farming systems Organic Eprints

The aim of organic agriculture is to produce food of high nutritional quality in sufficient quantity. Field experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of organic and conventional growing systems on (i) total amounts and sup-ply of N taken up or applied to plants during a five year crop cycle period and (ii) crops total dry matter (DM) yield obtained during same period. The total DM yields from the organic treatments were 25–33% smaller than from the conventional treatments. Wirkung von Pflanzenkohle im Futter oder in der Einstreu auf den Stickstoffgehalt in der Einstreu bei Broilern Organic Eprints

In einem Stall mit 4320 Ross 308 Broilern wurde der Einfluss von Pflanzenkohle als Futter- und Einstreuzusatz auf den Stickstoffgehalt in der Einstreu und die Mastleistung untersucht. Die Eintagesküken wurden gemischtgeschlechtlich gleichmässig in 16 Abteile eingestallt und zufällig vier verschiedenen Verfahren zugewiesen. Dies führte zu jeweils vier Wiederholungen pro Verfahren mit je 270 Tieren. Sie wurden nach 37 Tagen geschlachtet. Folgende vier Verfahren wurden angewendet: a) Kontrollgruppe, welche ein Standardfutter erhielt (K), b) alle drei Tage wurden etwa 0,3kg/m2 Pflanzenkohle in die Einstreu gegeben (PE), c) dem Futter wurde 1% Pflanzenkohle beigegeben (PF) und d) Kombination von a) und b) (PEPF). The main results may be summarised as follows: 1. Organic matter content is usually higher in organically managed soils indicating a higher fertility and stability of organic soils, thus reducing the risk of erosion. 2. Agriculture has manifold impacts on the environment and plays an important role in the environmental impacts of food chains. Previous studies have shown that organic farming can reduce these environmental impacts. But also within organic farms there is a high variability in their impacts on the environment. In our case study with five organic dairy farms, the farm with the highest energy demand used over 2.5 times more energy than the farm with the lowest energy demand. Today, organic farming is also a provider of public goods, promoted by an increasing number of actors. It may be seen as a “commons”, that has to be shaped and developed by new types of collective commitments to study. Two French experiences in that perspective aiming to protect water resources and led by local authorities have been analyzed. The study shows that the local authority behaves as a facilitator of territorial development plan. It acts through two complementary levers, the control of supply (land and ownership) and demand (institutional catering). Sources of N2O in organic grass-clover pastures. Organic Eprints

Organic farming practises, and in particular dairy production systems based on grass-clover pastures are becoming increasingly abundant within Danish agriculture. Grass-clover pastures may provide a mitigation option to reduce grassland nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions (Velthof et al. 1998). The objectives of this work was to examine the relationship between N2O emissions and transformations of inorganic N in organically managed grass-clover pastures of different ages. Results from the project will be used for calibration of the FASSET whole-farm nitrogen transformation model.

Økologisk produktion anses af mange som et initiativ, der kan mindske landbrugets påvirkning af det omgivende miljø. For at give en nuanceret vurdering af, hvordan økologiske bedrifter påvirker miljøet, er det dog nødvendigt at tilvejebringe yderligere viden om samspillet mellem landbrugsproduktion og miljø. Kløvergræs er et vigtigt element i økologisk mælkeproduktion. Flere undersøgelser har dog antydet at denne driftsform rummer en risiko for uønskede udslip af gasformige kvælstof-forbindelser til omgivelserne. En af de gasformer der er særlig opmærksomhed omkring, er lattergas, der er en kraftig drivhusgas med en væsentlig betydning for den globale opvarmning. Af det samlede danske udslip af drivhusgasser, udgør lattergas mere end 10%, hovedsalig udledt ved landbrugsaktivitet. Deposition of urine and dung by grazing animals is a strong source for N2O production and evolution in grass pastures. Investigations have shown that at least 20% of the annual losses of N2O from a grazed pasture may be associated with urine patches. Moreover, it is well known that urine depositions causes plant damage (scorching) and root death. It can therefore be hypothesized that organic C is released, which may further stimulate the production of N2O. Majs-biomasse kan omdannes til klimavenlig CO2-neutral energi ved behandling til bioetanol og biogas. Men gødskes majsen med affaldet fra biogasanlægget, dannes der betragtelige mængder af den kraftige drivhusgas, lattergas. Herved reduceres klimagevinsten mærkbart. Dyrkning af majs til energiformål skal derfor ske med ingen eller lille tilførsel af N.

In mid September the very first experiment with growing/finishing pigs at Lövsta Livestock Research Centre will start. This will be a double première event – the first growing/finishing pig experiment at the new research centre and – to our knowledge - the first experiment with mussel meal in pig diets. This mussel meal is produced from mussel meat only, ie no shells are included. Mussel meal has proved to be an excellent feed ingredient for poultry – what about pigs?

Gülle besser verstehen – Ergebnisse des Gülleuntersuchungsprojektes 2017 Organic Eprints

Flüssige Wirtschaftsdünger, also alle Formen von Gülle und Jauche, geraten heute gesellschaftlich immer mehr in Kritik. Aus landwirtschaftlicher Sicht steht die verlustarme Ausbringung, vor allem in Hinblick auf gasförmige Stickstoffverluste im Vordergrund. Die Bevölkerung nimmt diese Ausgasungen, vor allem Ammoniak und Schwefelverbindungen als Geruchsbelästigung wahr, wodurch es immer häufi ger zu Auseinandersetzungen kommt. Entsprechend groß war das Interesse der Landwirte, am Gülleprojekt der LK Steiermark teilzunehmen. Agronomical and environmental performances of organic farming in the Seine watershed, France Organic Eprints

This work suggests that Soil Surface Balance is a robust indicator to compare the performances of organic agriculture with those of conventional agriculture, even strictly following the rules of rational and optimised application of fertilisers. The results of long term nitrogen budget calculation brought us to seriously reconsider the relevance of the need to increase crop yields, and more broadly to reconsider cropping patterns and production systems.
