An approach to include soil carbon changes in life cycle assessments Organic Eprints
Petersen, B.M.; Knudsen, Marie Trydeman; Hermansen, J.E.; Halberg, Niels.
Globally, soil carbon sequestration is expected to hold a major potential to mitigate agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. However, the majority of life cycle assessments (LCA) of agricultural products have not included possible changes in soil carbon sequestration. In the present study, a method to estimate carbon sequestration to be included in LCA is suggested and applied to two examples where the inclusion of carbon sequestration is especially relevant: 1) Bioenergy: removal of straw from a Danish soil for energy purposes and 2) Organic versus conventional farming: comparative study of soybean production in China. The suggested approach considers the time of the soil CO2 emissions for the LCA by including the Bern Carbon Cycle Model. Time...

An integrated simulation model to evaluate national policies for the abatement of agricultural nutrients in the Baltic Sea Organic Eprints
Hyytiäinen, Kari; Ahtiainen, Heini; Heikkilä, Jaakko; Helin, Janne; Huhtala, Anni; Iho, Antti; Koikkalainen, Kauko; Miettinen, Antti; Pouta, Eija; Vesterinen, Janne.
This study introduces a prototype model for evaluating policies to abate agricultural nutrients in the Baltic Sea from a Finnish national point of view. The stochastic simulation model integrates nutrient dynamics of nitrogen and phosphorus in the sea basins adjoining the Finnish coast, nutrient loads from land and other sources, benefits from nutrient abatement (in the form of recreation and other ecosystem services) and the costs of agricultural abatement activities. The aim of this study is to present the overall structure of the model and to demonstrate its potential using preliminary parameters.

Fodder production requires the highest energy input in dairy farming. Taking the organic and conventional dairy farms from the project “climate effects of land use systems – evaluations on pilot farms” as an example we analyse the energy input for producing different fodder types and the influence of feeding strategies in Southern Germany. The results show that grazing is the most energy efficient form of feeding, followed by fresh grass and silage. Hay requires the highest energy input per unit forage energy. Maize silage has a lower energy input due to high yields. The higher the part of roughage in the ration the lower is the energy input for production of the ration.

Approaches to assess the environmental impact of organic farming with particular regard to Denmark Organic Eprints
Hansen, Birgitte; Alrøe, Hugo Fjelsted; Kristensen, Erik Steen.
Ever increasing attention is being paid to the environmental impact of intensive agricultural practices, and in this context organic farming is gaining recognition as a relatively friendly production system. In general, the risk of harmful environmental effects is lower with organic than with conventional farming methods, though not necessarily so. This review examines organic farming in the light of European conditions, with special regard to recent research findings from Denmark. It specifies the environmental problems caused by modern farming practices and discusses appropriate indicators for assessing their impact. A Driving Force-State-Response (DSR) framework is employed to organise and understand the processes and mechanisms that lie behind the...

Potensiale for økt lønnsomhet i små biogassanlegg. Organic Eprints
Soerheim, Kristin Marie; Ebbesvik, Martha Oliva; Kvande, Ingvar; Fjørtoft, Kristian.

Aspects of phosphorous fertilisation in organic farming Organic Eprints
Schnug, E; Haneklaus, S; Kratz, S; Fan, X.
Balanced fertilisation is essential for a considerate use of limited phosphorus (P) resources and for sustainability in organic farming. Plant available soil P levels will decrease and soil fertility will diminish when using P sources with limited P availability such as rock phosphates, bone and bone meals. An in situ digestion with a combination product of elemental S and rock phosphate enhanced significantly the solubility of non water-soluble P sources. In addition to the problem of insufficient solubility, mineral P sources can be contaminated with toxic heavy metals such as Cd 0.1–92.3 mg kg-1) and U (<LLD - 481 mg kg-1) from their source. Farmyard manure and slurry may contain up to 953/727 and 376/132 mg kg-1 Zn and Cu, respectively.

Assessing impacts of alternative agricultural land use scenarios on nitrogen leaching with the INCA-N model Organic Eprints
Granlund, K.; Puustinen, M..
The Integrated Nutrients Model for Catchments - Nitrogen (INCA-N) model was applied in Savijoki, a small (15,4 km2) agricultural catchment, in order to analyse possibilities to achieve the targeted 50 % reduction in agricultural nitrogen loading. The model was applied for the years 1995-1999, representing the first period of the Finnish Agri-Environmental Programme, a widely adapted policy measure for controlling environmental impacts of agriculture in Finland.

Assessing nutrient and sediment transport for Water Framework Directive purposes using the SWAT model - a case study in SW Finland Organic Eprints
Bärlund, Ilona; Kirkkala, Teija; Kämäri, Juha.
The ecological status of lake Pyhäjärvi, located in south-western Finland, may be classified as moderate due to its elevated nutrient concentrations and algal biomass production. Thus, the Yläneenjoki river basin, accounting for >50% of the total phosphorus loading to the lake, was chosen as the Finnish test catchment in the Benchmark models for the Water Framework Directive project. One aim of the project was to test the suitability of models like the catchment scale model SWAT for the assessment of nutrient and sediment transport and management options needed to meet the surface water quality requirements.

Assessing the public goods provided by organic agriculture: lessons learned from practice Organic Eprints
Smith, Laurence; Padel, Susanne; Pearce, Bruce; Lampkin, Nic; Gerrard, Catherine L; Woodward, Lawrence; Fowler, Sue; Measures, Mark.
The role of farms as providers of public goods has long been recognised, and measuring performance in this area is of increasing interest to policy makers, in light of the approaching Common Agricultural Policy reform. The Organic Research Centre has been working on this topic in recent years, through the development of sustainability assessment tools. The latest outcome from this process is a ‘Public Goods’ assessment tool, developed through a Natural England funded project which aimed to evaluate the benefits accruing from organic management and entering into an Organic Entry Level Stewardship (OELS) agreement. This paper describes the development of the Public Goods (PG) tool, and what has been learned in the process.

Assessment of animal welfare and environmental impact Organic Eprints
Leeb, Christine.
During this presentation the CoreOrganic2 project ProPIG was introduced and methods to assess animal welfare and environmental impact were presented. Furthermore some examples were given and models to relate animal welfare and environmental impact were discussed. It was concluded that selected aspects of animal welfare and environmental impact can be assessed on farm, however, it remains to discuss how to relate them to each other- a concrete hypothesis and specific, measureable outcomes are required. The high influence of management makes the variation within systems larger than across systems, allowing to identify solutions.

As livestock farming in general, organic livestock farming contributes to emissions of ammonia, odour and particulate matter. Especially for yards and free ventilated housings there is only little knowledge on the magnitude of emissions. This often complicates authorization processes for constructing new or altering existing housings. Main issues of the workshop are: requirements in authorization processes, measures to reduce emissions and emission measurement standards. Ongoing projects are presented and their relevance as well as knowledge gaps for organic farming are discussed.

Ausgewählte Parameter der Ökoeffizienz im ökologischen und konventionellen Marktfruchtbau Schleswig-Holsteins Organic Eprints
Biernat, Lars; Loges, Ralf; Taube, Friedhelm.
Approximately 13 % of the total greenhouse gas emissions in Germany are caused by agricultural practices. From an environmental and economic point of view, gaseous N losses as well as nitrate leaching to groundwater play, a significant role. The aim of the present study is to analyze abiotic environmental effects of organic and conventional all-arable farming at a highly productive site in Northern Germany. Two different organic crop rotations with 25% vs. 40% legumes and no application of external N-fertilizers were compared over a two-year period to a typical site specific conventional rotation at an average mineral fertilser input of 195 kg N ha-1 a-1. For gas flux measurement, the closed-chamber method was applied. Nitrate leaching was measured by...

Biogas plants gain increasing circulation in organic agriculture. Among systems engi-neering effects on matter cycles, soil, plants and environment particularly depend on the integration of the biogas plant into the farming system. Ecological effects should already be taken into consideration in the planning stage. Therefore appropriate tools are required. In this contribution ecological effects of changing an organic cash crop farming system into a biogas system are shown by using an established modelling approach. Starting from an existing cash crop farm a biogas-scenario was developed which includes e. g. structural adaptations of the cultivation system and crop rotation, the use of internal products and manuring. The biogas plant was conceived as a...
