Bi-cropping fodder maize in an existing (grass)clover sward Organic Eprints

Organic cultivation of fodder maize is still considered to be difficult. Weed pressure, soil structure degradation during harvest and low nutrient efficiency are some of the common problems. Directly sowing maize in a (grass)clover sward using special-ized drilling machines can solve these problems. In a bi-cropping experiment under organic conditions we found similar yields as the reference treatment (ploughing) when the maize was sown in a clover sward, the roots of the remaining sward were cut one week after sowing and an additional fertiliser was applied.

Die Biologisch Landwirtschaft leistet aus folgenden Gründen einen wichtigen Beitrag zum Grundund Trinkwasserschutz: Die Beeinträchtigung durch chemisch-synthetische Pflanzenschutzmittel ist ausgeschlossen. Aufgrund des angestrebten geschlossenen Betriebskreislaufes und rechtlicher Vorgaben ist der Eintrag von Nitrat in das Grund- und Trinkwasser drastisch reduziert. Ökonomische Berechnungen zeigen, dass die Biologische Landwirtschaft zur Verringerung von Kosten, die gegenwärtig die Allgemeinheit tragen muss, beiträgt. Biologischer Landbau bedeutet damit vorsorgenden Grundwasserschutz anstelle nachsorgender Maßnahmen.

Biochar as a Soil Amendment: A Review of the Environmental Implications Organic Eprints

The term 'biochar' refers to black carbon formed by the pyrolysis of biomass i.e. by heating biomass in an oxygen-free or low oxygen environment such that it does not (or only partially) combusts. Traditional charcoal is one example of biochar produced from wood. The term 'biochar' is much broader than this however, encompassing black carbon produced from any biomass feedstock. The use of biochar as a soil additive has been proposed as a means to simultaneously mitigate anthropogenic climate change whilst improving agricultural soil fertility. Biochar decomposition in agricultural soils of temperate climate Organic Eprints

Results › Carbon mineralization rates were highest in maize straw and lowest in pyrochar amended soil. › Pyrochar showed even lower CO2 fluxes than non-amended soil. › Initial mineralization rates of maize straw and hydrochar were higher in soil M, whereas in Soil D the pyrochar was decomposed slightly faster. › Hydrochar derived carbon was readily incorporated in the microbial biomass of both soils, pyrochar resisted nearly completely. › Comparison of carbon pools CO2 , Cmic and Corg at day 12 and day 205 shows that a stabilsation of maize feedstock of more than a double could be achieved with HTC and far beyond that scale with pyrolysis.

Biodegradability screening of soil amendments through coupling of wavelength-scanned cavity ring-down spectroscopy to multiple dynamic chambers Organic Eprints

A system was developed for the automatic measurements of 13CO2 efflux to determine biodegradation of extra carbon amendments to soils. The system combines wavelength-scanned cavity ring down laser spectroscopy (WS-CRDS) with the open-dynamic chamber (ODC) method. The WS-CRDS instrument and a batch of 24 ODC are coupled via microprocessor-controlled valves. Determination of the biodegradation requires a known d13C value and the applied mass of the carbon compounds, and the biodegradation is calculated based on the 13CO2 mixing ratio (ppm) sampled from the headspace of the chambers. Biodiversity as a tool in crop nutrition Organic Eprints

In the abstract it is discussed how increased biodiversity in the choice of crops, catch crops and green manures can be used to improve organic crop rotations. Use of more species with variable characteristics can make it possible to make rotations with reduced losses of nutrients and improve nutrient supply for organically grown crops.

Biogas in organic agriculture: Effects on yields, nutrient uptake and environmental parameters of the cropping system Organic Eprints

System effects of biogas fermentation in organic cropping systems with and without livestock (dairy farming) were investigated from 2002-2005. In both systems no differences in yields and nutrient uptake were detected in the legume crops. In the livestock-system non legume crops of the slurry system had no higher yields but a higher nitrogen uptake (6 %) than the stable manure system. Slurry-fermentation had no effect on yields and nitrogen uptake. The inclusion of crop residues in the fermentation system increased the nitrogen uptake about by 10 % and reduced the nitrate leaching potential by ca. 10 %. The inclusion of external substrates lead to a further increase in nitrogen yield of 10 %, but to no significant increase in dry matter yields....

Die landwirtschaftliche Biogasproduktion hat nicht nur ihre Wurzeln im ökologischen Landbau, sondern auch aktuell kann sie Ökobetriebe positiv beeinflussen. Das ist das Ergebnis der Analyse von zwölf Modellanlagen und -höfen und ihren Auswirkungen auf Wirtschaftlichkeit und Umwelt. In Deutschland besteht noch weiteres Potenzial für ein Ausbau, allerdings gibt es auch einige Hindernissgründe.

Biokull er et porøst strukturmateriale, laget av planterester som utsettes for høy temperatur uten tilgang på oksygen. Mye tyder på at en kombinasjon av biokull og organisk gjødsel gir flest fordeler.

Biologically fixed N2 as a source for the N2O production in a grass clover mixture, measured by 15N2 Organic Eprints

The contribution of biologically fixed dinitrogen (N2) to the nitrous oxide (N2O) production in grasslands is unknown. To assess the contribution of recently fixed N2 as a source of N2O and the transfer of fixed N from clover to companion grass, mixtures of white clover and perennial ryegrass were incubated for 14 days in a growth cabinet with a 15N2-enriched atmosphere (0.4 atom% excess). Immediately after labelling, half of the grass-clover pots were sampled for N2 fixation determination, whereas the remaining half were examined for emission of 15N labelled N2O for another eight days using a static chamber method. In 2009, the water resource management plan came into force in Luxembourg, an implementation of the water framework directive 2000/60/EG. Biologiske metoder for nedbryting av medisinrester i gjødsel Organic Eprints

Norsk senter for økologisk landbruk (NORSØK) og analyselaboratoriet MoLab ved Högskolan Kristianstad har gjennom dette forprosjektet arbeidet med å skaffe mer kunnskap om medisinrester i hestegjødsel, biologisk nedbrytning av disse og utvikling av analysemetoder. Sammen med Hageland Surnadal har vi gjennomført en markedsundersøkelse for å undersøke kjøpe- og betalingsvilligheten for eventuelle nye jordprodukter basert på lokal hestegjødsel. Det er lite kunnskap om medisinrester i norsk hestemøkk. I dette prosjektet har vi videreutviklet en analysemetode som kan analysere for ulike antibiotika og parasittmidler i samme prøve. Thus, there is an obligation to find consensus between the apparent opposing aims of renewable (bio) energy production and soil fertility in OA. This project aims at designing and evaluate a combined concept for biomass and bio-energy production in OA, while considering soil fertility.

Biomonitoring der weiträumigen Verdriftung von Pestiziden mittels Baumrinde, Vegetation und Passivsammler Organic Eprints

Anlass für ein Biomonitoring zur weiträumigen Verfrachtung von Pestiziden über die Luft war die wiederholte und erhebliche Kontamination von Bio-Körnerfenchel mit zugelassenen, häufig applizierten Pflanzenschutzmitteln, die kilometerweit von den Fenchelflächen angewendet wurden. Zudem wurde für Glyphosat eine breite Belastung der Bevölkerung gemessen: 99,6% von über 2000 Probanden der bundesweiten Studie „Urinale 2015“. Das Luftgüte-Rindenmonitoring mit Analysen von über 500 Pestiziden wurde von 2014 bis 2017 an 24 Standorten in Brandenburg und Bayern durchgeführt. Bodenbelastung durch Feldrandkompostierung: neue Aspekte Organic Eprints

Im Rahmen von Untersuchungen über die Umweltbelastung von Feldrandkompostmieten wurde anfangs dieses Sommers nach den regenreichen Wetterperioden der Einfluss von drei Mieten auf die Nährstoff- und die Schwermetallgehalte von Bodenproben unter und fünf Meter neben den Mieten untersucht. Dabei stellte sich heraus, dass nicht nur zum Teil stark erhöhte Nährstoffkonzentrationen unter den Mieten zu beobachten sind, sondern ebenfalls erhöhte Schwermetallgehalte, besonders Blei, Kupfer und Zink.

Kan og vil landbruget bidrage til reduktion af drivhusgasser? Undersøgelser tyder på, at der i landbrugssektoren findes et stort og uudnyttet potentiale for relativt billig reduktion af drivhusgasser. Selvom måling af reduktion i udledning af drivhusgasser inden for landbrugssektoren er behæftet med omfattende usikkerhed, vil man ved at måle reduktion indirekte gennem relative ændringer i produktionsprocesser kunne inkludere landbrugssektoren i reguleringsordninger. Spørgsmålet er, hvordan man kan få landbruget til at bidrage? Vi overvejer brugen af standarder, grønne afgifter og omsættelige kvoter.
