ABSTRACT Aims to investigate the effects of grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) on production performance, metabolism, and anti-oxidative status of Holstein dairy cattle in early lactation. Forty-eight multiparous Holstein dairy cattle were assigned to four groups (CON, G20, G40 and G80) and supplied with 0, 20, 40, and 80mg GSPE/kg of body weight/day. G20 significantly increased milk yield compared with other groups. Milk protein and non-fat-solids were increased in G20, G40 and G80 groups compared with the control group only at the 7th day during the experiment. No significant difference was observed in milk fat and somatic cell count, nor on parameters of energy metabolism in blood, liver function and kidney function between the four groups....

Abstract The ability of γ-oryzanol against Fusarium graminearum growth and mycotoxins production were assessed and compared with the antioxidant properties in order to improve its application in food chain, beyond of the conventional. The γ-oryzanol extracted from rice bran and characterized by HPLC-UV and GG-FD. Its antifungal in vitro, effect on complex F. graminearum CQ244 (halo diameter, ergosterol and glucosamine production) and mycotoxin production (deoxinivalenol, nivalenol and zearalenone) were determined by an adapted method adapted. Abstract Finger millet (Eleusine coracana) also known as tamba, is a staple cereal grain in some parts of the world with low income population. The grain is characterized by variations in colour (brown, white and light brown cultivars); high concentration of carbohydrates, dietary fibre, phytochemicals and essential amino acids; presence of essential minerals; as well as a gluten-free status. Finger millet (FM) in terms of nutritional composition, ranks higher than other cereal grains, though the grain is extremely neglected and widely underutilized. Different cultivars of walnut (Juglans regia L.) leaves (Cv. Lara, Franquette, Mayette, Marbot, Mellanaise and Parisienne) grown in Portugal, were investigated in what concerns phenolic compounds and antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. Phenolics analysis was performed by reversed-phase HPLC/DAD and 10 compounds were identified and quantified: 3- and 5-caffeoylquinic acids, 3- and 4-pcoumaroylquinic acids, p-coumaric acid, quercetin 3-galactoside, quercetin 3-pentoside derivative, quercetin 3-arabinoside, quercetin 3-xyloside and quercetin 3-rhamnoside. Bioactive properties and chemical composition of six walnut (Juglans regia L.) cultivars IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

The chemical composition, antioxidant potential and antimicrobial activity were studied in six walnuts (Juglans regia L.) cultivars (cv. Franquette, Lara, Marbot, Mayette, Mellanaise and Parisienne) produced in Portugal. Concerning their chemical composition the main constituent of fruits was fat ranging from 78.83% to 82.14%, being the nutritional value around 720 kcal per 100 g of fruits. Linoleic acid was the major fatty acid reaching the maximum value of 60.30% (cv. Lara) followed by oleic, linolenic and palmitic acids. The practice of rubbing different plant material juices or extracts into the skin to relieve pain and rheumatic symptoms is deeply rooted in folk medicine and has been used for a long time. Several common species, usually available in agroecosystems of the Iberian Peninsula, were/are used for topical medicinal preparations as reported in recent ethnobotanical surveys. Several exotic fruits are used in folk medicine as potential sources of healthy compounds. Rosa canina L. (dog rose) fruits and other parts used to be widely consumed in rural areas from Portugal. The present work intends to highlight the presence of bioactive compounds in those different parts, in order to improve their use based on scientific studies. The antioxidant activity was screened through: radical scavenging effects, reducing power, and inhibition of lipid peroxidation in brain homogenates. Phytochemical characterization and radical scavenging activity of Portulaca oleracea L. leaves and stems IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

The present work aimed to proceed to the phytochemical characterization of purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) and study of its antioxidant activity. Different samples were analyzed for their moisture and fat content, fatty acids, organic acids and phenolic compound composition and the scavenging effect of DPPH (2,2- diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radicals was evaluated. Water was the major constituent of purslane stems (average 90.5%) and leaves (average 91.8%), while fat values varied from 0.11% to 0.57%. Twenty seven fatty acids were found in the leaves samples, being linolenic acid the most abundant, ranging from 27.7 to 39.1%, followed by palmitic (19.3–24.3%) and oleic acids (11.6–19.5%). Insights in the antioxidant activity of diarylamines from the 2,3-dimethylbenzo[b]thiophene by the redox profile IPB - Escola Superior Agrária

Cyclic voltammetry was used to evaluate the antioxidant activity of 7-aryl or 7-heteroarylamino-2,3-dimethylbenzo[b]thiophenes previously synthesized by some of us, comparing their oxidation potentials with those of the well-known synthetic standards (BHA, BHT). Compounds with electron-donating groups on the arylamine moiety have lower Ep/2 than compounds with electron-withdrawing groups or electron-deficient rings (pyridines). The position of the methoxy group on the arylamine moiety also changes the oxidation potential: lower Ep/2 for the diarylamines with methoxy groups in the para position. Comparing the first peak potential with the ones of BHA and BHT, the diarylamine compounds show lower oxidation potential, and therefore higher reducing power. A...
