Utilisation de l'écho-intégration en recherche halieutique (Analyse de 5 campagnes effectuées dans le Golfe de Gascogne de 1983 à 1987) ArchiMer
Masse, Jacques.
Afler a short review of acoustic principles, methodology and purposes of accustic surveys are described and some examples given. IFREMER instrumentation, strategy and calculations used during echo sur veys are  described in details and criticized. Five acouslic sur veys carried o t in the Bay of Biscay between 1983 and 1987 show that several species are generally mixed , and lheir identification is very oflen biased by behaviour phenomena. A new way of classi fying echotraces and interpretating data has been applied to these surveys. The results are summarized in tables and maps. Whenever multispecies structures are concerned, it seems at present impossible to assess absolute biomasses based on acoustic survey method. ln such a situation, acoustic surveys...

Variability in natural behaviour, and observed reactions to an ROV, by mid-slope fish species ArchiMer
Lorance, Pascal; Trenkel, Verena.
The behaviour of eight large benthopelagic fish taxa was analysed using video records collected with an ROV on the mid-slope of the Bay of Biscay. The studied species were roundnose grenadier (Coryphaenoides rupestris), orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus), deep-sea scorpionfish (Trachyscorpia cristulata echinata), and black scabbardfish (Aphanopus carbo), as well as individuals belonging to the families Alepocephalidae, Chimaeridae, and Scyliorhinidae, and to the order Squaliformes. Some of the observed fish were grouped at the family taxonomical level due to visual identification to species being unreliable. Assumed natural (undisturbed) behaviour was categorised in terms of (i) body position with respect to the bottom sea floor, (ii) locomotion and...

Variability of energy density among mesozooplankton community: new insights in functional diversity to forage fish ArchiMer
Dessier, Aurelie; Dupuy, Christine; Kerric, Anais; Mornet, Francoise; Authier, Matthieu; Bustamante, Paco; Spitz, Jerome.
To explore some aspects of mesozooplankton functional diversity, this study quantified energy density during the springtime in the Bay of Biscay both between different species and between different size-classes. Energy densities of copepod species (Centropages typicus, Anomalocera patersoni, Calanus helgolandicus, and Labidocera wollastoni), as well as anchovy eggs (Engraulis encrasicolus) ranged from 0.5 to 6.7 kJ/g wet weight (ww). Considering size-classes, energy densities varied from 0.74 to 1.26 kJ/g ww. Energy density of C. helgolandicus exhibited a spatial pattern with the highest values in the plume of the Gironde estuary. In contrast, no spatial pattern of energy density has been detected considering size-classes. Our results showed that the...

Variation in life-history traits of European anchovy along a latitudinal gradient: a bioenergetics modelling approach ArchiMer
Huret, Martin; Tsiaras, K; Daewel, U; Skogen, Md; Gatti, Paul; Petitgas, Pierre; Somarakis, S.
Anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus distribution in European waters spans from the Mediterranean Sea to the North Sea, and is expected to expand further north with global warming. Observations from the eastern Mediterranean (North Aegean Sea), the Bay of Biscay and the North Sea reveal latitudinal differences in growth, maximum size, fecundity and timing of reproduction. We set up a mechanistic framework combining a bioenergetics model with regional physical-biogeochemical models providing temperature and zooplankton biomass to investigate the underlying mechanisms of variation in these traits. The bioenergetics model, based on the Dynamic Energy Budget theory and initially calibrated in the Bay of Biscay, was used to simulate growth and reproduction patterns....

Vertical and horizontal controls of a haptophyte thin layer in the Bay of Biscay, France ArchiMer
Farrell, Hazel; Gentien, Patrick; Fernand, Liam; Lazure, Pascal; Lunven, Michel; Youenou, Agnes; Reguera, Beatriz; Raine, Robin.
Investigations into the phytoplankton of the Bay of Biscay in July 2006 revealed an extensive bloom of an unidentified haptophyte species. High-resolution sampling techniques identified the region in the vicinity of the mouth of the Loire estuary as an area of high (106–107 cells l−1) cell densities of the haptophyte in a thin sub-surface layer. This organism dominated the phytoplankton population regionally. Measurements of the vertical distribution of horizontal shear showed that the population, located at ca. 20 m depth, was confined to a layer lying between two density discontinuities with high shear. Physical measurements indicated that the population was being advected southeastwards, along the coast. Seaward spreading of the population was also...
