Bio-economic management strategy evaluation of deepwater stocks using the FLBEIA model ArchiMer

Deepwater fish are characterized by long lifespans, late maturity and low productivity. This implies slow recovery from low biomass levels and it is, therefore, important to manage these stocks correctly to avoid overfishing. However, these stocks are generally data poor, which it makes difficult to apply quantitative assessment models on which to base their management. The management strategy evaluation (MSE) approach consists in evaluating the performance of management strategies by simulation before their implementation. Biological productivity enhancement over a continental shelf break (Bay of Biscay, NE Atlantic) evidenced by mesozooplankton aspartate transcarbamylase activity ArchiMer

During spring of 2005, satellite imagery revealed high sea surface chlorophyll a concentrations over the edge of a wide continental shelf in the Bay of Biscay (NE Atlantic). As a descriptor of biological productivity, mesozooplankton aspartate transcarbamylase specific activity was measured in situ during the bloom. Notably high values were detected in the bloom area relative to other parts of the study area.

Pour être en phase avec les recommandations de la communauté européenne, les missions ORHAGO doivent utiliser un chalut à perche pour la constitution des indices d'abondance de sole dans le golfe de Gascogne. Un chalut à perche de 4 m (environ 2000 kg) a été construit et acheté aux Pays-Bas dans l'optique des futures campagnes à la mer. La campagne TECHORHAGO visait à essayer et à mettre au point les différentes manoeuvres de mise à l'eau et de virage du chalut en le remorquant sur les deux treuils du Gwen-Drez. L'EROC (Engin Remorqué d'Observation des Chaluts) était embarqué.

This document presents a synthetic study of benthos in two large areas of the French coast: East-Channel and the area between Loire and Gironde. This original synthesis stocktakes biotopes maps published for the vast majority in the 70’s. The report uses the previous descriptions and analysis done by the different authors, and translates them with present specific names or biotopes codes, as proposed in the European EUNIS referring system. The presented maps are standardized and referred geographically with WGS84 to be collated together. Change in the shoaling behaviour and nutritional condition of anchovies (Engraulis encrasicolus L.) during a wind-induced water column disturbance: a natural event test of a general hypothesis ArchiMer

Fishermen have long observed the sudden change of shoaling behaviour of small pelagic fish following a strong wind event. The phenomenon was thereafter confirmed by fisheries scientists using acoustic tools. In this study, we report our observations made with acoustics to measure disorganization of the previously observed spatial distribution and shape of shoals that occurred after a wind event. Understanding the patterns of spatial and temporal variations in animal abundance is a fundamental question in ecology. Here, we propose a method to quantify temporal variations in animal spatial patterns and to determine the spatial scale at which such temporal variability is expressed. The methodology extends from the approach proposed by Taylor (Taylor, L. R. 1961. Aggregation, variance and the mean. Circulation on the shelf and the upper slope of the Bay of Biscay ArchiMer

Here, we used measurements taken with an array of 10 acoustic Doppler current profilers deployed from July 2009 to August 2011 to describe the tidally filtered circulation over the shelf and upper slope on the French side off the French coasts of the Bay of Biscay. The measurements provided an overview of the shelf and slope circulation throughout the entire water column over a large range of spatial and time scales. The average circulation over the shelf and upper slope of the Bay of Biscay was poleward following the topography with a speed of the order of 3 cm s(-1). In 1948, Le Danois reported for the first time the occurrence of living cold-water coral reefs, the so-called "massifs coralliens", along the European Atlantic continental margin. In 2008, a cruise with R/V Belgica was set out to re-investigate these cold-water corals in the Penmarc'h and Guilvinec Canyons along the Gascogne margin of the Bay of Biscay. During this cruise, an area of 560 km(2) was studied using multibeam swath bathymetry, CTD casts, ROV observations and USBL-guided boxcoring. Comparative assessment of two proxies of fish discard survival ArchiMer

Two vitality index approaches have been demonstrated to be good proxies of discard survival in similar fishing and environmental conditions: Reflex Action Mortality Predictors combined with injuries (RI) scores that measure the proportion of impaired reflexes and injuries, and a simpler, quicker, but less precise approach based on ordinal categories related to fish body movements and injuries (semi-quantitative assessment, SQA). This study assessed and compared these two approaches for five species (two flatfishes, skates, a seabass and a catshark) discarded in a coastal otter trawl fishery in the Bay of Biscay. La campagne PELGAS participe à la gestion du stock d’anchois du Golfe de Gascogne, en réalisant une évaluation directe à la mer de la biomasse d’anchois. Pour déterminer la biomasse totale, des appareils acoustiques envoyant des ultra-sons dans l’eau pour détecter les bancs de poisson sont utilisés. Ensuite des pêches sont effectuées sur les zones détectées pour déterminer la composition des bancs (espèces, poids, longueurs…). En parallèle, les oeufs d’anchois sont comptés. Concentrations of mercury and other trace elements in two offshore skates: sandy ray Leucoraja circularis and shagreen ray L. fullonica ArchiMer

Trace metal concentrations in muscle and liver tissues from two offshore species of skate were examined. Concentrations of mercury in muscle of Leucoraja circularis (n = 20; 23–110.5 cm total length, 157–490 m water depth) and L. fullonica (n = 24; 28.5–100 cm total length, 130–426 m water depth) were 0.02–1.8 and 0.04–0.61 mg kg− 1, respectively. Concentrations of both As and Hg increased with total length. Only the largest specimen had a concentration of Hg in muscle > 1.0 mg kg− 1. Data were limited for specimens > 90 cm long, and further studies on contaminants in larger-bodied skates could usefully be undertaken.

Connectivity patterns of anchovy larvae in the Bay of Biscay from a coupled transport-bioenergetic model forced by size-structured zooplankton ArchiMer

Connectivity during early life stages of pelagic fish, defined here by survival probability between spawning and early juvenile habitats, depends on a combination of sufficient food availability and low predator encounter along drift trajectories. For anchovy in the Bay of Biscay, larval transport experiments throughout the spawning season suggest accumulation of early juveniles in the offshore area of the southern Bay, as well as retention over the mid-shelf at mid-latitude. However, late summer-early autumn surveys suggest presence of juveniles only in the former region. Contrasting years in the Gironde estuary (Bay of Biscay, NE Atlantic) springtime outflow and consequences for zooplankton pyruvate kinase activity and the nutritional condition of anchovy larvae: an early view ArchiMer

A major spawning ground of the European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) population in the Bay of Biscay is located near the mouth of the Gironde estuary. Variations in the river discharge affect the supply of nutrients to the coastal marine area encompassing anchovy spawning grounds. Two "Pegase" cruises (May-June 1997 and 1998) observed two contrasting situations: with and without a superficial layer of less saline water. Two new nutritional indices were used to assess potential effects (1) on carbohydrate assimilation rates by zooplankton estimated via pyruvate kinase (PK) activity measurements and (2) on nutritional condition of the anchovy larvae measured with the DNA/C index.
