Arzul, Isabelle; Renault, Tristan.
In 1972, Farley reported the presence of herpes-type viral particles in adult American oysters (Crassostrea virginica) for the first time. Since then, this pathogen has been detected in various marine bivalve species, usually associated with massive mortality events. To date, herpes-type viruses have been detected in the following species: C gigas, Ostrea edulis, O. angasi, Tiostrea chilensis, Ruditapes decussatus, R. philippinarum and most recently, Pecten maximus.

Innovations in pregrowing and growing techniques of bivalves ArchiMer
Flassch, Jean-pierre.
Featuring innovation could be simpleness in the field application, allowing to account in the best of natural conditions. The new technologies increasing production are usually subordinate to climatic, geogaphic and mainly socio-economic conditions wre they are used, therefore they cannot be always directly tranferred to other countries. Another fact could be pointed out : in high productivity areas the innovations are quite unusual ; the influrence of farmers and the routine practices generally restrict the propagation of new ideas and their application ; on the other hand in the new countries or with a starting prodcution the new techniques get the best chances to be transferred. These last fifteen y the use of synthetic stuff has been one of the...

Innovations in the nursery culture and maturation of bivalves ArchiMer
Flassch, Jean-pierre.
Innovations in the nursery culture and maturation of bivalves are being worked on at aIl levels of research and production, but transfer to the development stage must be effected differently in each case. Over the past twenty years, there have been a great many innovations in bivalve rearing, most of which may be described in terms of rearing conditions: higher and lower densities; confined or open environemnt; overflow; upwelling; floating, suspended, raised or ground systems, etc. The quality of an innovation is characterized by its influence on the efficient operation of the specific culture program and by how easily it may be transferred.

Interspecific comparison of Cd bloaccumulation in European Pectinidae (Chlamys varia and Pecten maximus) ArchiMer
Metian, M; Warnau, M; Oberhansli, F; Teyssie, J; Bustamante, Paco.
The uptake and loss kinetics of Cd were determined in two species of scallops from the European coasts, the variegated scallop Chlamys varia and the king scallop Pecten maximus, following exposures via seawater, phytoplankton and sediment using highly sensitive radiotracer techniques (Cd-109). Results indicate that, for seawater and dietary pathways, C. varia displays higher bioaccumulation capacities in terms of uptake rate from water and fraction absorbed from ingested food (assimilation efficiency) than Pecten maximus. Regarding sediment exposure, P. maximus displayed low steady-state Cd transfer factor (TFSS < 1); however, once incorporated, a very large part of Cd transferred from sediment (92%) was strongly retained within R maximus tissues....

Antona, Martine; Paquotte, Philippe.
This article is the second part of an analysis of mussel-farming sectors in France, Holland and Spain. The first part, devoted to France, addressed the national offering's stresses of adapting to changes in the mussel market. From the viewpoint of questions raised within the profession while preparing the French mussel-farming sector for the regulatory and economic environment of 1992, Spain and Holland offer benchmarks in terms of structuring the offer and planning markets. This article presents the mussel-farming business in Spain and Holland from these two angles.

Grizel, Henri.
Shellfish culture is widely spread throughout the world and is the focus of an important activity either as a fishing of shellfish deposits or as a culture. The greatest production areas are Northern America with the United States and Canada. Asia with Japan and Korea, Europe with France, the Netherlands and Spain. At some point, each of these countries has had to face more or less important epizooties of variable durations. Each time, some studies have been carried out to try and find the origin of the disease, understand its evolution and look for solutions to the crisis it lead to. If, in most cases, these mortalities could be linked to the presence of some infectious agents, some phenomena still remained unexplained, the mortalities potentially being...

ArchiMer
Cochennec, Nathalie; Le Roux, Frédérique; Berthe, Franck; Thebault, Anne.
Bonamiose, a disease caused by the protozoa Bonamia ostreae, has destroyed the flat oyster Ostrea edulis production, in France but also in Europe and in the United States since 1979. Another species of Bonamia has been monitored in New-Zealand, in Australia and lately in Chile. In Canada and Australia, two other parasites have been described in cupped oyster: Mikrocytos mackini and Mikrocytos roughleyi. All these small size protozoa are grouped under the name "Mikrocell". For most of them, light and electronic microscope descriptions have been realised. Based on those criteria, different taxonomic positions have been proposed. However, these analysis are still questioned today.

Paulmier, Gerard; Durand, Francoise.
Several oceanographic surveys in Martinique waters with, as main objectives, either geological mapping and evaluating marine aggregate resources of research into deep water carcinologie resources, nafe produced interesting informtion on benthic pppulations situated from the infralittoral to the bathyal shelf, for the wole of faunistic groups and more specifically for the malacofauna. The distribution of the various faunistic group has been analysed in function to the bathymetric, edaphic and possibly, thermic factors. The infralittoral zones, up to the 20 metres isobath, and circalittoral, between 60  and 80 metres, are known to have the richest populations. Corals, sponges, polychaete annelida and molluscs are the best represented, numerically as well as...

Lower Carboniferous marine bivalves from the Cantabrian Mountains (Spain) Naturalis
Amler, M.R.W.; Winkler Prins, C.F..
The Lower Carboniferous bivalves of the Vegamián and Genicera formations are described, followed by a brief discussion on palaeoenvironmental and palaeogeographical aspects. The black shales of the Vegamián Fm. (Tournaisian) yield a peculiar association of euchondriid taxa (Euchondria wagneri sp. nov., Eu. cf. losseni, Eu. cf. bilstonensis, and euchondriids under open nomenclature) and Chaenocardia? carbonifera. This association displays Central-European Kulm-type character, but other typical taxa from the German Kulm are missing in this environment, especially the posidoniids, actinopteriids and pterinopectinids. The light coloured sediments of the Genicera (or Alba) Fm. yield bivalves in slightly greater diversity which include rare palaeotaxodonts,...

Lower Ordovician bivalves from southern Bolivia: paleobiogeographic affinities Ameghiniana
Sánchez,Teresa M.; Babin,Claude.
Bivalves from the Sella Formation (middle Arenig, Tarija, Bolivia) are described and illustrated. The taxa recognized are Hemiprionodonta lusitanica (Sharpe), known from southern Europe (Spain, Armorican Massif, Montagne Noire), Redonia riojana Sánchez from the west-Argentina Famatina basin, and the new species Coxiconchia sellaensis . These species support the paleobiogeographic affinities between the south European (Armorica), Bolivian and west Argentine basins and corroborate the development of an extensive and continuous shelf throughout the northwest margin of Gondwana during the Arenig. Additionally, specimens at different stages of dental development of Natasia boliviensis (Babin and Branisa) are reported.

Mantle histology, histochemistry and ultrastructure of the pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera (L.) ArchiMer
Jabbour-zahab, Roula; Chagot, Dominique; Blanc, François; Grizel, Henri.
The edge and isthmus of the mantle of Pinctada margaritifera (Mollusc, Bivalvia) were studied using light and electron microscopy from a morphological and histochemical point of view. Six areas with several subareas were differentiated in the mantle edge. One of these areas is similar to the epithelium isthmus, Trials to elucidate the nature of the pigment responsible for the black colour of the shell and pearl indicate a melanin-like material. Possible functions of the distinctive epithelial areas in Pinctada margartifera mantle are discussed according to available data on the secretion of organic matrix of the shell, protein sclerotization and deposition of crystals in some pearl-forming molluscs. Three different epithelial areas in the outer mantle edge...

Modelling growth and reproduction of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas: Advances in the oyster-DEB model through application to a coastal pond ArchiMer
Bourles, Yves; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Pouvreau, Stephane; Tollu, Guillaume; Leguay, Didier; Arnaud, Christophe; Goulletquer, Philippe; Kooijman, S.
A bio-energetic model, based on the DEB theory exists for the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas. Pouvreau et al. [Pouvreau, S., Bourles, Y., Lefebvre, S., Gangnery, A., Alunno-Bruscia, M., 2006. Application of a dynamic energy budget model to the Pacific oyster, C. gigas, reared under various environmental conditions. J. Sea Res. 56, 156–167.] successfully applied this model to oysters reared in three environments with no tide and low turbidity, using chlorophyll a concentration as food quantifier. However, the robustness of the oyster-DEB model needs to be validated in varying environments where different food quantifiers reflect the food available for oysters, as is the case in estuaries and most coastal ecosystems. We therefore tested the oyster-DEB...

Modelling the spatial heterogeneity of ecological processes in an intertidal estuarine bay: dynamic interactions between bivalves and phytoplankton ArchiMer
Grangere, Karine; Lefebvre, Sebastien; Bacher, Cedric; Cugier, Philippe; Menesguen, Alain.
Spatial patterns in ecological communities result from a combination of physical and biological factors. In an estuarine intertidal bay, spatial differences have been found in the structure of phytoplanktonic communities and in the biological performance of cultivated oysters. It has been hypothesised that trophic heterogeneity exists, although the mechanisms controlling it remain undefined. Spatial and temporal interactions in the structure of phytoplanktonic biomass and in the biological performance of cultivated oysters were highlighted in this estuarine intertidal bay using a 2-dimensional hydrodynamic model coupled to a nutrient-phytoplankton-zooplankton bivalve food web model. The coupled models allowed a reproduction in space and time of variations...

Monitoring of trace metal contamination in the Souss estuary (South Morocco) using the clams Cerastoderma edule and Scrobicularia plana ArchiMer
Anajjar, E; Chiffoleau, Jean-francois; Bergayou, H; Moukrim, A; Burgeot, Thierry; Cheggour, M.
Concentrations of seven metals (Cd, Cu, Cr, Pb, Ni, Zn, Hg) were monitored monthly during 2 years in two bivalves, Cerastoderma edule and Scrobicularia plana collected from the Souss estuary (South Morocco) before and after the commissioning of a sewage treatment plant in November 2002. According to trace metals, changes in concentrations were observed mainly in S. plana, characterised by a decrease of Cu, Hg and Pb when Cd was clearly increasing. Conversely, no clear changes were observed in C. edule during the same periods. This study suggests the use of S. plana in the monitoring of trace metal contamination of such coastal marine environments.

Monobrachium parasitum (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) epizoic on antarctic bivalves and its bipolarity Naturalis
Jarms, G.; Mühlenhardt-Siegel, U..
During antarctic macrozoobenthos research, colonies of Monobrachium were found on small bivalves. The species problem of the genus Monobrachium is discussed and it is stated that there are three species. However, the widespread species Monobrachium parasitum might be a species-complex comprising several species. This can only be confirmed by rearing experiments and/or molecular investigations. Host specificity and the factors influencing the infection of the bivalve species are shown. The impact of the infection is demonstrated to be harmful to the host bivalve, although not of a parasitic nature. The phenomenon of bipolarity within the genus Monobrachium is discussed.
