Shellfish farms show a number of specificities, some of which are decisive in the triggering and spreading of infectious and non-infectious diseases. This chapter deals only with infectious diseases which are currently the major hazard in shellfish culture, due to their virulence but also to the insufficiency of available fighting means. The epidemiological analysis is essentially based on the example of French shellfish culture. But the conclusions that can be drawn are of general interest. We then tackle the therapeutic and prophylactic fighting means. Polyploidy in the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinarum - 1 - Chemical induction and larval performances of triploids ArchiMer

An effective treatment using catochalasin B (1 mg CB/ml dimethylsulfoxyde in 1 litre of sea water) was developed to induce triploidy in the Manila clam Ruditapes philippinurum (Adams and Reeve). The percentage of induced triploidy was assessed by karyological examination of embryos and spat. The treatment was found to be optimal between 20 to 35 minutes post-insemination exposure to CB, at 25'C, and produced 75.8 ± 5.7% triploid embryos on the average over four experiments. Growth and survival of larvae to metamorphosis were recorded for two different rearings each split into two replicates. Preservation biases, rates of evolution and coherence of databases: Bivalvia as a study case Ameghiniana

Several hypotheses about the influence of preservation on Bivalvia rates of evolution estimates (marine and freshwater families) were tested in a previous paper. However, the database used for those tests had a patchy quality and our results were provisional. Now an improved database dealing with only marine families has been used in order to test again those hypotheses. We removed freshwater families from the early database and we test the statistical hypotheses on these two data sources. Diversification patterns remain stable in general with these different databases; however, only the improved database shows the mass extinction at the end of the Triassic times. The aim of this work is the study of seawater filtration process to preserve commercial bivalves and main tain their quality during harmful algal blooms. The originality of this work is based on the study of rustic processes, capable of removing toxic microalgae from seawater. Two filtration processes have been studied, the immersed hollow fibres membranes and a sand filter. The origin and nature of fouling mechanisms have been identified in connection with the selectivity and energy consumption . QUANTITATIVE KARYOTYPE OF DIPLODON CHILENSIS (GRAY 1828) (BIVALVIA:HYRIIDAE) Gayana

The karyotype of a freshwater population of Diplodon chilensis located in La Poza area of the Villarrica Lake (39º18'S; 72º05'W), Southern Chile, was studied. The chromosomes were obtained by squash of cleaving embryos, previously treated with colchicine and fixed in ethanol-acetic acid 3:1 at 4ºC and stained using the Feulgen reaction. Diplodon chilensis showed a diploid karyotype of 2n = 34, with metacentric and submetacentric chromosomes. This work is the first approach to cytogenetic characterization of Chilean populations of this species.

Recherche par PCR d'OsHV-1 (Ostreid Herpesvirus type 1), dans des échantillons d'eau de claires ostréicoles ArchiMer

Depuis 1991, des mortalités massives associées à des infections à herpèsvirus sont rapportées chez des larves et des juvéniles de différentes espèces de bivalves dans différentes régions du globe. Un nouveau groupe au sein de la famille des Herpesviridae a été créé afin d'y intégrer les herpèsvirus d'invertébrés marins avec actuellement pour unique représentant le virus infectant l'huître creuse, Crassostrea gigas, OsHV-1. IFREMER (LA TRINITE/MER - LA TREMBLADE).
Un contrat de Plan État-Région Bretagne a été signé en 1983 pour financer des recherches sur la période 1984-1988 dans le but de permettre la relance de l'élevage de l'huître plate, à la suite de la deuxième épizootie due à un protozaire, Bonamia ostreae. Ce rapport présente les travaux réalisés et les résultats acquis durant l'année 1988, dans les domaines de la pathologie (étude de la maladie et des mécanismes de défense des mollusques) de la génétique (recherche de souches résistantes), de l'épidémiologie descriptive et de la zootechnie.

Relations entre le contenu lipidique des ovocytes de Pecten maximus (Mollusque, bivalve) et les performances des larves en élevage ArchiMer

The lipid content of spawned oocytes of Pecten maximus was studied by image analysis of semi -thin histological sections and a lipid index was defined. The female gametes were obtained by thermic stimulations of mature adults scallops from different populations after out of season conditioning or sampled in situ during the spawning season. After fertilization, the larval development was followed. The results reveal a large variability in lipid content of normal oocytes. The lipid content can be regarded as homogeneous inside a spawning but the heterogeneity is greater for wild scallops than for conditioned ones. The benthic communities of this a macrotidal bay were still little studied. Mortalities in a number of commercially important mollusc species have been associated with the detection of viruses belonging to several families. The first description of a virus was in adult eastern oyters, Crassostrea virginica, with the detection of virus particles resembling members of the family Herpesviridae. Subsequently, mass mortalities in French stocks of adult Portuguese oysters, C. angulata, were associated with irido-like virus infection. Other viruses observed in molluscs are described as members of the families Iridoviridae, Papovaviridae and Reoviridae. Spatial and temporal distribution of mercury and methylmercury in bivalves from the French coastline ArchiMer

Marine mercury (Hg) concentrations have been monitored in the French coastline for the last half a century using bivalves. The analyses presented in this study concerned 192 samples of bivalves (mussels: Mytilus edulis and Mytilus galloprovincialis and oysters: Crassostrea gigas and Isognomon alatus) from 77 sampling stations along the French coast and in the French Antilles sea. The goals of this study were to assess MeHg levels in various common bivalves from French coastline, and to identify possible geographic, taxonomic or temporal variations of concentrations.
