einafshar, soodabeh; rohani, roxane; ahmadzadeh ghavidel, reihaneh.
Saffron flowers by products including sepals, petals and stamens have no application in Iran’s food industries; nevertheless stigmas contain a considerable amount of carotenoids withhigh antioxidant properties. In this study carotenoid compounds were extracted by an organic solvent (mixture of N-hexane, ethanol and acetone; 2:1:1 v: v) and ultrasound waves. Ultrasound waves were applied at a frequency of 24 kHz and amplitude of 20, 60 and 100% for5, 10 and 15 minute. All treatments were tested  in triplicates. The extraction efficiency, total carotenoid and phenolic compounds, free radical scavenging and reducing power of Fe III were analyzed. The results showed that ultrasound waves with amplitude of 100% imposed for 15 min caused the highest extraction...

Torularhodin and Torulene: Bioproduction, Properties and Prospective Applications in Food and Cosmetics - a Review BABT
Zoz,Liliana; Carvalho,Julio Cesar; Soccol,Vanete Thomaz; Casagrande,Thais Costa; Cardoso,Ligia.
Torularhodin and torulene are two widespread microbial carotenoids with relatively few studies, as compared to other nutraceutical carotenoids such as β-carotene, lycopene and astaxanthin. Several genera of microorganisms produce it in high concentration (up to 0.1% of the cell dry weight), probably as a protection against photooxidation and free radicals. These pigments, which differ by a terminal carboxylic group, have provitamin-A activity and, being red, have potential use as food and cosmetic color additives. Several factors affect the biosynthesis of these substances, including: the composition of culture media, light irradiation, which may enhance the carotenoid production up to 25% of the non-irradiated cultures, and temperature, which changes the...

Kumar,Manoj; Kulshreshtha,Jyoti; Singh,Gajendra Pal.
In order to find out optimum culture condition for algal growth, the effect of light irradiance and temperature on growth rate, biomass composition and pigment production of Spirulina platensis were studied in axenic batch cultures. Growth kinetics of cultures showed a wide range of temperature tolerance from 20 ºC to 40 ºC. Maximum growth rate, cell production with maximum accumulation of chlorophyll and phycobilliproteins were found at temperature 35 ºC and 2,000 lux light intensity. But with further increase in temperature and light intensity, reduction in growth rate was observed. Carotenoid content was found maximum at 3,500 lux. Improvement in the carotenoid content with increase in light intensity is an adaptive mechanism of cyanobacterium...

Relation between lipid and fatty acid composition of eggs and larval survival in white pacific shrimp (Penaeus vannamei, Boone, 1931) ArchiMer
Palacios, Elena; Rehault, Jean Pierre; Heras, Horacio; Marty, Yannick; Moal, Jeanne; Samain, Jean-francois.
In this study, lipid classes and fatty acid composition were determined in eggs of P. vannamei as a function of survival to zoea III stage. Spawns were reared individually to zoea III and grouped, according to their final survival to this larval stage, into spawns of high and low survival. Eggs of individual spawns were analyzed for lipid and fatty acid composition of neutral and polar lipids and the results were then grouped according to survival to zoea III. The lipids within each group (high and low survival to zoea III) were pooled for the separation of phospholipids and the analysis of their fatty acid composition. Higher levels of triglycerides, carotenoids, and linoleic (18: 2n-6) acid in eggs were associated with improved survival to zoea III....

Dunaliella tertiolecta (DT) was chemically investigated to isolate molecules inhibiting cancer cell proliferation and inducing apoptosis in vitro. The potency to inhibit cell growth was used for the bio-guided fractionation and isolation of active compounds using chromatographic techniques. The DT dichloromethane extract exhibited a strong anti-proliferative activity on MCF-7 and LNCaP cells, and was further fractionated and sub-fractionated by RP-HPLC. High resolution mass spectrometry and spectrophotometric analysis unequivocally identified violaxanthin as the most antiproliferative molecule present in DT DCM extract. Violaxanthin purified from DT induced MCF-7 dose- dependent growth inhibition in continuous and discontinuous treatments, at...
