A study of chlorophyll-like and phycobilin pigments in the C endosymbiont of the apple- snail Pomacea canaliculata Biocell

Pigments present in the brown-greenish C morph of an intracellular endosymbiont of Pomacea canaliculata were investigated. Acetone extracts of the endosymbiotic corpuscles showed an absorption spectrum similar to that of chlorophylls. Three fractions obtained from silica gel column chromatography of the acetone extracts (C I, C II and C III), were studied by positive ion fast atom bombardment-mass spectrometry (FAB-MS) and hydrogen-nuclear magnetic resonance (H-NMR). Algae and cyanobacteria on painted surfaces in Southern Brazil Rev. Microbiol.

Algae and cyanobacteria disfigure the external surfaces of buildings and may cause their physico-chemical deterioration. Even though the climate in Brazil is humid, there is no published literature on this problem. The objective of this work was to identify the major phototrophs present on Brazilian constructions in residential, urban and rural sites. The algal and cyanobacterial types present on discolored surfaces of painted buildings in nine different municipalities in Brazil, all lying between latitudes 19° South and 30° South, were examined. Algas planctônicas do reservatório da Pampulha (MG): Euglenophyta, Chrysophyta, Pyrrophyta, Cyanobacteria Rev. Bras. Bot.

Neste trabalho foram descritos 28 táxons de algas planctônicas pertencentes às divisões Euglenophyta, Chrysophyta, Pyrrophyta e Cyanobacteria, encontradas no reservatório da Pampulha, estado de Minas Gerais. Foram analisadas amostras no período de maio/1992 a fevereiro/1997. Em número de espécies, Euglenophyta foi a que apresentou maior número (13 espécies em uma família), seguidas de Cyanobacteria (oito espécies), Pyrrophyta (cinco espécies) e Chrysophyta (duas espécies). Vinte e três táxons são primeiras citações para o estado de Minas Gerais.

Limnoperna fortunei é uma espécie invasora na América do Sul que, devido ao seu crescimento excessivo, tornou-se um sério problema para o ambiente e para os setores usuários de água bruta. L. fortunei é um molusco filtrador que se alimenta de fitoplâncton e outras partículas suspensas. Moluscos filtradores são grandes bioacumuladores de toxinas. Desta forma, L. fortunei apresenta um potencial de bioacumulação e transferência na cadeia trófica de cianotoxinas. Neste estudo, experimentos in vitro demonstraram que L. fortunei é capaz de alimentar-se de espécies de Cyanobacteria potencialmente tóxicas, Microcystis viridis e Pseudanabaena sp. beta-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) is a neurotoxic non-protein amino acid suggested to be involved in neurodegenerative diseases. It was reported to be produced by cyanobacteria, but also found in edible aquatic organisms, thus raising concern of a widespread human exposure. However, the chemical analysis of BMAA and its isomers are controversial, mainly due to the lack of selectivity of the analytical methods. Cyanobacteria produces bioactive compounds including plant growth regulators. Naphthalene acetic acid (NAA), a toxic substance, is a synthetic plant regulator used in micropropagation. The aim of this work was to evaluate morphogenetic and antioxidant effects produced by intra and extracellular substances from Scytonema hofmanni (Cyanobacteria) during the multiplication in vitro of Lilium alexandrae and to compare them to those produced by NAA. BMAA (â-N-methylamino-L-alanine) is a non proteinogenic neurotoxic amino acid that has been associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Its analytical detection is widely debated thus the global production of BMAA by cyanobacteria is questioned. We first aimed at developing an analytical method allowing for highly selective identification of BMAA and isomers, using HILIC chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Then, we have cultivated and analyzed more than 50 microalgae (e.g. cyanobacteria, diatoms). Unlike DAB, one of its natural isomer, BMAA was only reported in five diatom species and cannot be accounted as a cyanotoxin anymore. The saline-alkaline crater-lake Dziani Dzaha (Mayotte, Indian Ocean) is dominated by the bloom-forming cyanobacterium Arthrospira. However, the rest of the phototrophic community remains underexplored because of their minute dimension or lower biomass. To characterize the phototrophic microorganisms living in this ecosystem considered as a modern analog of Precambrian environments, several strains were isolated from the water column and stromatolites, and analyzed using the polyphasic approach. Cyanobacterial populations that build 'kopara' microbial mats in Rangiroa, Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia ArchiMer

Cyanobacterial populations, the primary producers and builders of 'kopara' microbial mats were studied in four selected ponds along the rim of the Rangiroa Atoll, French Polynesia using a polyphasic approach. Seven isolates were maintained in uni-cyanobacterial cultures, characterized morphotypically and phylogenetically by evaluating sequences of the 16S rRNA gene of about 620 base pairs in length. Cyanobacteria in natural populations were analyzed microscopically, characterized morphotypically, and compared with cultured strains. Cyanophyta del Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi (Argentina), II Darwiniana

Se identificaron 88 taxones de Cyanophyta continentales pertenecientes a los órdenes Chroococcales, Oscillatoriales, Nostocales y Stigonematales. Se describen e ilustran las citas nuevas para nuestro país: Aphanothece smithii, Gloeothece palea, Hydrocoleum muscicola, Tolypothrix fragilis, Tolypothrix papyracea, Scytonema fritschii, Dichothrix baueriana, Stigonema flexuosum, Fischerella muscicola, Hapalosiphon delicatulus, Hapalosiphon luteolus y Anabaena variabilis f. tenuis. Otras 48 especies se registran por primera vez para el Parque Nacional Nahuel Huapi. Con respecto al hábitat, se señalan las especies planctónicas, metafíticas, epífitas, epiltícas y limícolas, y se incluyen características ecológicas y la distribución geográfica.

While the intracellular function of many toxic and bioactive cyanobacterial metabolites is not yet known, microcystins have been suggested to have a protective role in the cyanobacterial metabolism, giving advantage to toxic over nontoxic strains under stress conditions. This study describes the design and application of a stratified sampling strategy of waterbodies to assess and analyze the distribution of cyanobacteria at a regional scale (Ile-de-France, IDF). Ten groups of hydrographical zones were defined within the IDF on the basis of their anthropogenic and geomorphologic characteristics. Sampling effort (n = 50) was then randomly allocated according to the number of waterbodies in each group. This sampling strategy was tested in August 2006, using a field probe to estimate total phyto-plankton as well as cyanobacteria biomasses. In order to assess the appropriateness of the use of internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences for the study of population genetics of marine cyanobacteria, we amplified and cloned the 16S rRNA gene plus the 16S-23S ITS regions of six strains of Prochlorococcus and Synechococcus. We analyzed them by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) and terminal restriction fragment length polymorphisms (T-RFLP).
